Hi, my name is Aysel and I am from Azerbaijan. I don’t live there right now
because I live in the UK, but I go there quite often because all my relatives
live there. I moved from Azerbaijan when I was quite young, but it doesn’t make
me forget it. Most of you have probably never heard of Azerbaijan, but I will
tell you about it.
Azerbaijan is a little country that is located in the Caspian Sea. The Caspian
Sea is actually considered to be a lake, so it’s the biggest lake in the whole
world. Azerbaijan is mostly populated by Muslims. The capital is Baku and people
there speak Azeri (the native language). Most people also speak Russian. Most
schools in Azerbaijan are free. The free schools have names such as ‘School N.5,’
so the free schools are numbered.
The weather in Azerbaijan is usually quite nice. In summer the weather is
usually about 25 degrees Celsius up to 35 degrees Celsius. Some winters there
is snow. The citizens of Azerbaijan get really excited when it snows, and
everyone goes outside. Throughout the whole year there is always a fresh cool breeze.
In the center of Baku you can enter an ‘Inner City,’ which in Azeri is called
Icheri-Shekher and has beautiful narrow streets, mosques, a minaret dating from
1078, and 12th-century city walls. It also has a Shirvanshah (Khan’s) Palace,
which was built in the 15th century and is now a museum.
Some of you may have heard of the USSR. Azerbaijan was part of it, but it also
separated from it in 1991 when the USSR fell. I am proud being from Azerbaijan and
miss living there a lot.
