Hi. My name is Taina and I live in San Juan the capital of Puerto Rico, which I'm going to be writing about. I go to a private
school, and I get a really good education there. I speak Spanish, English and French.
Puerto Rico is situated in the North Caribbean Sea (part of the West Indies). It is about 300 miles long, which is really small,
compared to other countries. It has many beaches and harbors. About 60% of the land in Puerto Rico is mountainous. Puerto Rico
has a tropical climate.
Christopher Columbus sailed to Puerto Rico in 1493 on his second trip to the Western Hemisphere. In the mid 1500's most of the
Indians (the original peoples who inhabited Puerto Rico) died of enslavement or diseases. Puerto Rico has suffered for hundreds
of years from hurricanes and plagues. But as the Spanish population begun to grow, they were developing much better.
Most of Puerto Rico's tropical rainforests are gone. There are beautiful plants and trees that bear fruits and nuts. They have
few wild animals left - bats, mongooses, snakes, iguanas, lizards and frogs.
The original inhabitants of Puerto Rico were the Tainos (a branch of Arawak Indians). As many as 30,000 were there when the
Spanish first settled. Most of them were sent to other islands as slaves or died of diseases. Some married Spanish colonists.
The descendants make up a small part of the present population. During the 18th and 19th centuries African slaves were brought
to work for vegetation purposes (sugar and coffee plantations). After 1803, when the U.S. bough Louisiana territory, so many
French people moved from Louisiana to Puerto Rico. Regardless of national or racial backgrounds, language or religion
(Roman Catholicism), or customs, Puerto Rican people are mainly Spanish.
The biggest industry in Puerto Rico is manufacturing - glass, leather, rubber, plastic, tobacco. One of Puerto Rico's most natural
and reliable sources is the climate. About 60% of Puerto Rican land is farming land. Until the 1940's Puerto Rico's economy was
based largely on farming. Later on, government helped Puerto Rico build factories. People from other countries started to notice
their growing economy. People came to observe. An interesting fact on Puerto Rico: It is known for being one of the world's top
countries for making medicines.
All I have to say now is, Puerto Rico is so beautiful (the nature is awesome), you wouldn't believe it. The people are warm and
friendly and will always welcome new visitors. Puerto Rico es mi mundo.
My name is Angelica and I'm 10 years old. I'm from Puerto Rico. I was born in the
city of Ponce. I live with my mom and my older brother in the United States now. My
brother just started college. The temperature on the island is warm or hot, about the
80's all year, and it never ever snows. You can go to the pool everyday. The island is
in the Caribbean Sea. It has mountains and rivers. You can see the sea all around the
island. One of the main celebrations is Christmas and Three Kings Day where all the
kids receive presents and toys. The language we speak is Spanish. Puerto Rico has a
commonwealth government with a governor. One of the mains trees is the flamboyan. We
have the same money as the U. S. that is dollars. The thing I enjoy the most is going
to the beach. I like Puerto Rico a lot!
Hi! My name is Bilmaris and I am 8 years old. Puerto Rico is an island, a very
small island. That's where I come from. Well, I was born in the United States, but
my parents both come from Puerto Rico. I love Puerto Rico the same way my parents do.
Puerto Rico has very beautiful beaches and very beautiful rain forests. The most popular
rain forest is called El Yunque. It is a very big and beautiful rainforest.
My grandparents are still living Puerto Rico. They say that they were born there,
and they want to die there. That is something typical about the Puerto Ricans. They
dream about moving back to Puerto Rico. The weather in Puerto Rico is very hot all year.
The native language in Puerto Rico is Spanish, but most people speak English, too.
Puerto Rico doesn't have a president. It has a governor. His name is Anivil Acevedo
Vilar. He is like President George Bush. Most people in Puerto Rico are Catholics,
like my dad's family. My mom's family is Christian. What I like the most is the food.
My favorite food is the pastelillos. They are made with flour tortillas (fried) with
ground beef inside. I love it! Puerto Rico is very small in size, but very big in heart
because we love our small island.
Hi, my name is Adamaris. I am 8 years old. My story is about Puerto Rico. Puerto
Rico is a small island in the Caribbean. I was born in the USA, but my parents they
were born in Puerto Rico. They always talk nice about Puerto Rico. I can't wit to go
to Puerto Rico! One thing that everybody knows about Puerto Rico is a little frog
called the coqui. The coqui is a symbol of Puerto Rico. You can only find it in
Puerto Rico. The coqui makes a sound at night. It goes, "Coqui! Coqui!" The coqui
measures around 2 or 3 cm. Puerto Rico has a flag that is red, blue, and white just
like the American flag but it only has one star. In Puerto Rico you can find the biggest
telescope observatory that is located in Arecibo. Something you can see in most parks
and homes is a beautiful tree with beautiful orange flowers called el flamboyan. It is
the most beautiful tree. It's also a symbol for Puerto Ricans. If you visit Puerto Rico,
a place you have to visit is El Morro. El Morro is located in San Juan, the capital of
Puerto Rico. El Morro is an ancient place. You can see the ocean everywhere you stand.
This is what I know about Puerto Rico. I can't wait to go there!
My name is Jamilex. I am 9 years old. My parents are from Puerto Rico, also my
grandparents. The all are from Aguadilla. Aguadilla has beautiful beaches with lots
of palms. Some of the them have little stores in front of the beaches called kioskos.
Some of them have big giant rocks on the boardwalk. Also they are right on the beach
and have lines with inflatable toys like balls and surfing boards and much more.
Around July they make fiestas patronales which means a beach party. Famous singers
come. There are rides for kids and different foods. The weather in Puerto Rico is
very hot and sunny. At 7:00 in the morning the sun is very hot and the air is humid.
Puerto Rico has lots of mountains. Everywhere you go there are tall mountains and
beautiful rivers with water coming down the mountains. If you go to the country a lot
of people have farm animals in their yards. The favorite music in Puerto Rico is Reggaeton.
There are a lot of humble people and really good fruit like mameys, parchos, quenepas,
and mangos. I hope this information will be helpful.
My name is Frances and I am 11 years old. In my country of Puerto Rico the life
is beautiful because the climate is hot and there are a lot of beaches and palm trees
to refresh us. There are lots of mountains and valleys that are very green. In PR the
people celebrate carnivals with lots of color and costumes and calypso music. In
December all families join together to celebrate the Nativity Day. We make typical
foods like rice, peas, pork, sweet rice, and sweet coconut. The people go to the
house of families and friends with guitar, maracas, and tambourines. On January 6th
is a special day for the kids. We celebrate the Three Kings Day. The majority of Puerto
Rican people are very religious. My country has a lot of places to visit: The Morro,
the Old San Juan, the girancha in the malecon of Ponce, PR, the caves of Camuy, the
river El Chorro de Dona Juana, El Yunque, and many more places. This is my country:
Puerto Rico of my heart!
My name is Yamil and my family is from Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is an island.
The capital is San Juan. It is a tropical island. It's never winter. It's surrounded
by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It was discovered by Christopher Columbus.
Acevedo Vila is the governor. The language is Spanish. Puerto Rico has a historical El
Morro that was made by Los Espanoles. The food we eat is rice with beans, alcapurrins,
pastels, and pig. The fruits in PR are mangoes, pineapples, oranges, and bananas. The
sports are baseball, basketball, and horseracing. The wildlife animals are cotorra,
pitirres, and horses. The principal trees are roble, yagrumo, mangoes, avocadoes, and
flamboyan. The flamboyan grows only in May. It's a beautiful flower. Puerto Rico is my
family's country.
Hi, my name is Kristal, and I am 8 years old. I am from Puerto Rico. I was born in
the city of Ponce, but now I live in the U.S. This is the story of my country.
On August 12, 1508, Juan Ponce de Leon, a soldier who had traveled with Columbus in 1493,
came in Puerto Rico with a small army of soldiers and became Puerto Rico's first governor.
The first town was Caparra. The Taino people were the first people living in my island.
The most important leader of the Taino was Agueybana. The capital of Puerto Rico is San
Juan and was started in 1508 by Juan Ponce de Leon. The major cities are: Ponce, Caguas,
Mayages, Bayamon, Carolina, Arecibo, Guaynabocaye, Aquadill, and Fajardo. Our language
is Spanish and English, but most people speak Spanish. 3,950,000 people live on the island
of Puerto Rico-about 1,000 people per square mile. That's a lot of people in one place!
About 2 million Puerto Ricans have come to the United States. More Puerto Ricans live in
New York City than in San Juan.
Puerto Rico is a cool place to live and visit. You come and visit Puerto Rico, too!
My name is Luis and I am 8 years old. My family is mostly from Puerto Rico, but we
live in the United States now. The island of PR is almost a rectangle. We eat things
like rice, bacalaitos, crunchy cod fritters, surallitos, corn meal fingers, and
ampanodillas filled with lobster, crab, conch, or beef. Yum! Our religioun is Catholic.
In PR we don’t have a president because we are part of the US. Instead we have a governor.
I like to see dancing like the plena, bomba, salsa, danza, and regaeton.
One thing I don’t like about Puerto Rico is that people kill other people a lot.
It’s pretty dangerous. Also, hospitals are not as good as here. I have diabetes and
was almost in a coma when I was 1 year old. When we moved here I have better doctors.
I like being from Puerto Rico and the United States.
Hi! My name is Lexi. I’m 8 years old. My family is from Puerto Rico, but now I
live in the US. My favorite food is bacalao. It’s made from fish. It’s really good!
The best part about Puerto Rico is that it’s always hot over there. It’s so hot
there that every day I could go in my grandma’s pool. You don’t have to wear pants.
You wear a tank top and shorts because it’s so warm out. It’s really fun there. If
you go there sometime you will have a blast!
You will see a lot of trees. Most of them are palm trees and coconut trees. When
I wanted something sweet, I couldn’t eat candy. I could only have coconut. Sometimes
my grandma put a hole in the coconut so I could drink the milk.
It is really noisy over there in Puerto Rico. There is also a lot of traffic. I
hope you like Puerto Rico, too!
My name is Ian and my family is from Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is a little place.
It is going to be flooded any day by a weak system. I live in the US now, but I used
to live in San Juan, the capital. My grandparents moved here but are moving back.
They live in a house where bad weather hits, but I don’t worry because the back part
of the house is safe.
Puerto Rico has Burger King, McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken just
like us. In P.R., though, we eat fried iguana. It tastes good!
There is too much noise and bad money for people in Puerto Rico, though. They
don’t pay you a lot for work. For gas, it costs too much money, too! Now that’s a
rip off!
Now I like living in the USA because there’s no floods. I miss Puerto Rico a
little, though.
Hi! My name is Luis. I am 8 years old. My family used to live in Puerto Rico.
My tio and titi and my grandpa and grandma still live in Puerto Rico. We are going to
visit them in June.
You can buy little ducks to keep in Puerto Rico. In the schools in Puerto Rico
you can play dodge ball and tag, like here. They give you a little bit of homework,
though. You could see an iguana at the large zoo in San Juan, the capital. I like to
eat bacalao and go to Burger King.
I hope you visit Puerto Rico and like it, too!
