This would be where I'm documenting my misadventures, then.

Day 4-5

I'll toss these days into the same post, since there hasn't been too much going on really. Day 4 was mostly spent doing not-computer stuff. I serviced the car, which I mentioned previously. It all went well, but of course I picked the one day, at just the right moment to get rained on. You just can't win, lol. The rest of the day and evening was mostly spent drinking gin&tonic, munching snacks, stabbing around on IRC, and such.

Today I've swapped bits on my bicycle and then wnet for a 50km round-trip bike ride after lunch. Well back home I took a well deserved shower and sat down to read some OCC postings and had a coffee. Time seemingly flies some days, because all of a sudden it was dinner time, and now I'm here, writing this. At the moment I'm vibing to old CDs and fiddling with my internet radio station. I have a sneaky feeling the rest of the evening is going to be spent in more or less the same way, lol.

Day 3

Day 3 has been very chill. I'm still kinda burnt out from work, so with the frustrations from the past couple of days I felt it was time to chill the fuck out for a bit.

The day has mostly been spent not doing that much computing. I've watched a bunch of Youtube videos, which is surprisingly a pretty damn smooth experience on this old laptop. Even considering the browser is seemingly only running single-threaded. The CPU isn't even close to bottoming out. Very neat. Some time has been spent shitposting on IRC, cooking (I made Bruschetta on ciabatta for dinner. Heckin yum.) and changed the chain on my bicycle, only to realize I also need to replace the rear sprocket assembly because it was also worn out. Parts have been ordered.

Tomorrow I'll see what I come up with on the computer side of things. It's time to service the car, so I will be doing that tomorrow. You know, oil, filters, spark plugs, etc. I also got cravings for gin & tonic, so I'll stop by the bottle shop for some decent (read cheap) gin.

Day 2

So, things didn't go to plan, at all. You can read more about what and why in the About section.

Me now being on XP with a considerably more powerful computer (See, you should check out the About section!) I have a lot more possibilities and much more flexibility. For starters there is now UTF-8 support in the IRC client I use (xchat2) which means I can deal with nordic characters and chat with my other IKEA-land friends. I also installed the MyPal browser, which is an excellent fairly late Firefox port that gives a damn near flalwss modern web experience. It honestly loads and plays Youtube better than other browsers on my main computer, which is just mad. It feels illegal.

All hasn't been smooth though. Far from it, in fact. It's all due to me thinking it would be an amazing idea to use Microsoft FrontPage98 to build and manage this site. After four different attempts of installing the damn thing, trying FrontPage 2000 and 2002 with no luck, trying to tack on an apache webserver with FrontPage extensions, failing, going back, installing the 98 version again and manually fucking about with its bundled webserver (and ancient NCSA httpd fork) I FINALLY gor the damn thing runnning enough that I could import and start restoring this web I had previously made on the WinMe machine. See, when you import a site to FrontPage, it forgets all the hyperlinks, and you can't just rescan them using the built in tools. You have to manually set the files up as connected boxes in the program. I can honestly see why FrontPage and other WYSIWYG editor get a bad name. 'Cause oh boy is it clunky. A simple text editor would have made this ordeal soo much easier and quicker. But this is more fun(?) Or I just like punishment. Who knows. But here we are at least. I was very, very fed up with it all at this point and went for a bike ride into town, and then just hung out on IRC for the rest of the evening.

Day 1

One goal for this week is to get to grips with FrontPage98. I cut my HTML teeth using notepad, so this whole WYSIWYG editor and web page generator type thing is really alien for me, and so far it has been very clunky and pretty frustrating. It's fun to quickly get a page up and going with themes and all. But simple things like renaming a button is close to impossible. Even the help docs are of no use. They just point you to the 'FrontPage Explorer' which is this interface where everything else is done, without any further explanation. But I'm sure I'll figure it out throughout the week!

Aaanyways, the day started with breakfast, coffee and the install of previously mentioned FrontPage 98. The weather was nice, so I decided to hop on the bicycle and go for a ride. The weather must have been too nice, because I was aiming for about a 25km ride, but ended up being nearly 45km. Oops.

Well back home I showered, made lunch and sat my ass down to fiddle with this webpage. And am currently typing these characters on what can only be described as a 'meh' keyboard. Which was the style at the time, I guess. The whole multimedia aim of Windows Me is going to be tested a bunch this week as well. Currently it's playing snr.dance (my internet radio station) while doing other things. It also has a DVD reader and MP3 player hotkeys I need to fondle someday. Sadly the internal speakers are heavily moisture damaged and sound terrible. But at least there's a jack to plug external speakers in!
