Defining a site basically tells Dreamweaver where the site will be located. The Site Definition dialog box is used to enter this information. Click Site at the top of the main Document window to open the commands used to define Web sites.

The Site Files command displays a list of existing sites. Clicking a site command opens a window containing all of the folders and files of the site.

The Define Sites command lets you change settings of existing sites.

Click New Site to begin creating the new site we will be working on today.

A Website has one main folder, which contains all of the folders and sub-folders holding the various pieces of the Website. Folders and subfolders can either be created at the beginning to organize the creation process or may be created as necessary as the project evolves. The Site Definition dialog box contains a selection of categories.

  • Local Info selection allows you to enter information about the local storage area of your Web sites.
  • Remote Info selection allows you to enter information about the remote server that will be hosting your website.
  • Design Notes selection allows you to turn on and off the design notes feature used to attach notes to any document in your site. Design notes can be copied, moved, and uploaded whenever the site is copied, moved, or uploaded.
  • Site Map Layout selection allows you to customize and specify the Homepage.
  • File View Columns allows you to specify the type of information displayed about each file in the Site window.

Use the dialog box under the Local Info category to name the new site.Dreamweaver will automatically enter the root folder. You can change the location of the root file if you desire.

Leave the Refresh Local List Auto and Enable Cache options checked to take full advantage of the automatic features of the Dreamweaver software. The new site has now been defined. Then click ok to proceed and a new window will open
