National Programs

The Commissioning Program: With the brother National Honorary Band Fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi, the Fraternity/Sorority commissioning program originated in 1953 and has since produced over 17 major works for band. The commissioning program of Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma is of prime importance to band music in America.

The National Intercollegiate Band: The NIB has become an integral part of each National Convention of Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma. Organized in 1947 by F. Lee Bowling, the NIB has produced superior performing ensembles while providing a meaningful musical experience for the participants. A guest conductor and a composer are commissioned for each biennial NIB performance. The NIB is not limited to Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma members. It is highly encouraged that non-TBS/KKY members audition. If you are selected to be a member of the NIB, the Fraternity/Sorority provides you with a NIB shirt, lodging during the primary rehearsal & performance days of your stay, and a CD of your performance. The 1997 NIB marked the 50th Anniversary of the band. The Zeta Alpha Chapter and Illinois State University came home from the 1997 Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma National Convention at The Camelback Marriot in Scottsdale, Arizona with the
1997 F. Lee Bowling Participation Award.

Outstanding Service to Music Award: One of the landmark contributions of Tau Beta Sigma to the world of college and university bands has been this highest award especially designed to honor women in music. The OSMA recognizes the musical contributions made by distinguished female conductors, composers, educators, artists, and clinicians.
