EMERALD LEGACY

Emerald Legacy is a story I am writing to expand my skills as a writer. I have used the Green Lantern concept as a base because it is a medium I am vastly familiar with, and a huge fan of. This is therefor a work of FAN FICTION, and is to be enjoyed as such. No money has been gained from this posting. Nor will I charge a fee to allow people to read it. A BRIEF HISTORY

OA was not the first great power, but it was the first not to be consumed by it's own greed.

Colonized by offworlders from the planet Maltus, OA was a planet of science and technology that reached the pinnacle of civilization when most worlds were still mired in the first glimmer of self-awareness.

Oans explored not only the stars but their inner selves, developing telepathy and telekinesis to aid them in their quest. Nothing was beneath an Oans' intrest, and nothing could remain a mystery for long. Theirs was a planet of harmony, and it remained so for a million years, but the scientist Krona was not content to explore space. He delved into the one area of science forbidden to all Oans: the Origin of the Universe itself. Krona ignored the warning that chaos would ensue as he watched time peel away, and the hand of creation reach into the cosmos and pluck that fruit of life. And the instant he saw it...

...the Universe exploded.

What had been one universe became two. possitive matter, and the other composed of Anti-matter. And with the unleashing of the anti-matter universe came a wave of evil that spread throughout fifty million worlds, corrupting what had been a paradise. The Oans saw it as their responsibility to contain the evil that one of them had unleashed.

They created a corps of android soldiers called Manhunters, which they dispatched throught the universe to combat the evil. Utimately, the Manhunters rebelled and their legions were disbanded.

Somewhere around this time they began to look upon themselves as Guardians of The Universe. they assembled the bravest beings from each sector of space, living beings. Each of these soldiers being a person totally without fear, strong willed, and completely honest. The Green Lantern Corps would succeed where unliving soldiers had failed.

The Guardians equipped the soldiers of the Green Lantern Corps with rings of power that surpassed any science developed on Earth or the magicks of ancient Atlantis and spread them throughout the Universe, 3600 members in all, each given their own sector of space to patrol and protect.

Each Power Ring formed their will into emerald energy reality. Each ring was limited by only three things. The color Yellow, the bearer's own imagination, and a limited power supply. Every 24 hours the ring had to be recharged at a Lantern shaped battery of power, and the Green Lantern had to recite an oath to remind them of their duty. It was from this battery that they gained the name, GREEN LANTERN.

The first power ring was awarded to Rori Dag of Rojira. Dag was the model for all the ring wielders to come as the Green Lantern Corps was born

More powerful and successful than the manhunters due to the near limitless power of the sentient mind, the Green Lantern Corps thrived for millennia. Loyalty and graditude earned the Guardians this time of relative calm...freeing them to pursue more loftier concerns. Their Green Lantern Corps dealt with conflict for them.

Since the formation of the corps, Lanterns of space sector 2814 have traditionally stood as the reigning example of the fight for all that is good. Truely, an inspiration through all time. Abin-sur. Amongst the countless ranks of Green Lanterns mentioned in the Book Of OA, was clearly the Green Lantern with the purest record, and the strongest will.

Until the day of his death.

On that day his power ring, instructed to find a suitable replacement to protect sector 2814, found the greatest Green Lantern who would ever join the Corps.

Hal Jordan of Earth.

Even more renowned than Aubin-sur, Jordan lead the Corps through its finest years. Unfortunatly unlike Aubin-sur, he lived to see the Guardians for the cold superior manipulators they were. A truth that would have destroyed a lesser Lantern.

Such headstrong resistance to the goals set forth by the Guardians hinted at an obvious flaw in their perfection. Mistakes were beginning to be made. Some of them monumental.

Sinestro, the most infamous of the renegade Green Lanterns, had caused trouble and worry for the Guardians--and Hal Jordan in particular. Eventually bringing their ultimate conflict back to OA where the Guardians had enlisted Sinestro's aid to defend them from a coming threat.

For who really needed a power ring? when the source of power lie in the Central Power Battery on OA. The link to every Green Lantern that had ever been. The place the Corps had to attempt to stop Hal Jordan from getting to. The place the Corps would die trying to protect. Ordered to do so by their aloof masters, the Guardians.

The Corps was all that Hal Jordan had. Coast City, his birtplace was gone. Guidelines the guardians had set forth, his own beliefs, were gone. And now his comrads in arms were gone as well.

Hal Jordan had always been there for the Guardians and the Corps. But the one time he needed them, Hal Jordan found out the hard way...

...he was on his own.

He descended upon them like a demon. Fell upon the Guardians and their Corps. And they were for the first time Green Lanterns knew fear, because the demon held the form of their Greatest Emerald Warrior,

Hal Jordan of Earth.

Hal had lost everything he had ever cared for, ever dreamed of, in the destruction of Coast City. The Guardians would not allow him to use his power to bring the city back. Hal's mind snapped and in one day he destroyed the Corps, Sinestro, and the Guardians. He thought...

Two years ago Kyle Rayner recieved a visit from a Guardian named Ganthet. The LAST Guardian. This Guardian granted Kyle the Legacy of the Green Lantern Corps. At the same time he passed on the legacy of Hal Jordan, Greatest of the Corps. Ganthet gave Kyle Hal's ring. No longer did it have a vulnerability to yellow. No longer did it have a set period of recharge. Now it was the most powerful weapon in the universe. A weapon so powerful that Kyle used it to destroy OA in order to keep a crazed Hal from gaining the power stored there.

NOW THE STORY BEGINS

On Earth, Kyle has been Green Lantern for two years. He is growing acustomed to the responsibility. But soon he will face a foe that required Green Lantern and the Flash to stop. This time Kyle will face him alone.

Deep in the reaches of space, near the center of the universe another event unfolds. In the clouded nimbus of energy that had once been OA, life stirs. This will ensure the legacy of the Green Lantern Corps lives on as well.

In another sector of space, one last legacy that belonged to Hal returns to the universe. A part of Hal's leagacy that no one has yet to mention to Kyle. A part that Kyle will soon learn to regret. The final part of Hal's legacy that will teach Kyle the meaning of these words..:

All three of these events ensure the continued existance of the

EMERALD LEGACY!

The legacy has been passed from Hal Jordan

And given to a new Emerald Warrior named Kyle Rayner.
