She was playing frisbee with her best friend, Annie Richardson. Jean threw the frisbee and it went flying to the other side of the street. Jean's mother, Elaine, warned the girls that they lived on a blind curve, but Annie forgot. She ran after the frisbee and a car came down the street going fast. The car hit Annie. Jean ran to her dying friend and kneeled down. She started crying, then an instant later, Jean found herself in Annie's mind and stayed there til Annie died. Jean was traumatized. She withdrew into herself...she didn't talk to anyone. Then a few weeks later, Professor and Mrs. Grey took their daughter to Salem Center, New York to see a man named Charles Xavier. She stayed there for a while. Unknown to the Greys, Xavier was a mutant. He shut down her telepathic powers and they remained dormant for years. She saw a boy at the mansion and she had an infatuation with him. Jean returned home. However, Jean had another mutant power, the power of telekinesis. She practiced it and got better at it.
Jean visited the X-Men frequently and she decided to join again on a Christmas Eve. She and Cyclops were dancing the night away at the Rainbow Room. The Sentinels arrived and kidnapped Jean and went to the moon, where Stephen Lang was creating new Sentinels and robot duplicates of the original X-Men. The X-Menwent to the moon to rescue Jean. They first believed that the robots were the original X-Men, but Wolverine sliced the Jean duplicate in the gut and saw robot parts. They went to Jean's safety. They had no way of getting back to Earth until Astronaut Peter Corbeau took them to the ship. He said that there was solar radiation in their course back to Earth, so if he flew the shuttle, he would have died. Jean volunteered to fly the shuttle. She telepathically stole the knowledge of Dr. Corbeau's flight training and was prepared to fly. Cyclops didn't think it was a good idea that she should fly, so Jean shot him with a telepathic shock bolt. The X-Men went into the cockpit and Jean began to fly it and by using her telekinetic power to block the radiation. The radiation came in the shuttle and took the form of Jean, but faceless, Jean's body was dying, so the Phoenix flew the shuttle and crashed into the Jamaica Bay. Jean was placed in a healing cocoon, while the other X-Men believed she was dead. About two years later, the Avengers found Jean in her cocoon. After she got out, she called the original X-Men, so they could reunite and make their own superhero team. They called it X-Factor. They had told the public that they were mutant hunters, but in reality, they saved mutants and sought them shelter. They even pretended to be humans. |
