Role Playing

I first discovered role playing games my freshman year at Oregon State University, starting with a now little known game called Tunnels and Trolls (remember Take That You Fiend!?) and then moving into the classic Dungeons & Dragons. Those were the good old days of pizza and Pepsi and all-night games. School took a distinct second to gaming in my academic life :)

After I left school, moved to Reno and met my husband, my gaming tastes turned to Champions and Fantasy Hero, and then, finally, to GURPS. Of all the systems I've tried I like GURPS the best, mostly because of its extreme portability from genre to genre, and because it's a system I can use to make up my character exactly the way I want her. It's true that the combat is fairly inadequate, but since I don't care about combat that doesn't bother me.

Now, my husband runs my friends and I in a game of his own design every Friday, a dark fantasy world full of angst and triumph, heroism and despair. We're all much more interested in the role-playing aspects than in combat (well, most of us :) so we may go for weeks without combat. Conflict there is aplenty, though.

A set of campaigns for GURPS, mostly of an apocalyptic (aftermath) nature. Each campaign includes character notes & sketches, a detailed set of world resources (cultures, topography, history, races). Nicely done. A great resource for someone who wants to grab a campaign and start running.
