The first Dark Gatherings Magic Tournament was a long day of some serious magic playing. Everyone brought in their own custom decks and every deck showed some serious potential. In the end however, three decks arose that just wouldn't quit, though as the hours passed everyone started to wish they would. Finally a winner emerged.
1st Place - Kathy WestAfter a rough start followed by a long long fight to the top, Kathy's deck finally trounced all comers. Her dragon and drakes deck featured Zirilan of the Claw. A very unpleasent card that brought her dragons to bear fairly quickly. Whenever Kathy's deck could survive the opening turns, the advantage quickly became hers as drakes, elder dragons, and even dragon whelps piled in against her opponent.
2nd Place - Greg BernardComing in second, Greg's vampires and other dark things deck was a red/black attack deck that brought out some heavy attackers very quickly and featured lots of direct damage. His deck defeated Kathy's numerous times, falling just one victory short of complete triumph.
2nd Place - Mike BurnsideTying Greg for second was yours truly. I used a red/white knight deck. I supplemented my knights with a few Viashino Sandstalkers and Dwarven Beserkers, giving me plenty of creatures that could attack the first round that they came into play, as well as some cards no one wants to block early on. When I could get on the attack early and keep the momentum I crushed all before me. Yet my opponents were often able to stop my early rushes and then my poor knights found themselves outmatched by dragons and vampires. It was a good day for me though and in a couple of months I'll have a new deck and be ready to try again. |
