Anakin is and his mother are slaves to Watto, the Junk Dealer, who won them in a bet from Gardulla then Hutt. He is the only human that knows how to race a podracer in Mos Espa. When he meets Qui-Gon Jinn, Jinn sees the power (Force) that Anakin possess and changed his life forever.
