John Shirley

Musician and Madman

John Shirley is a multi-talented individual. He's been writing science fiction and horror for over 20 years, with his first novel, Dracula in Love, published when he was 19. He was, along with William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, and others, involved with The Movement, a literary science fiction revolution, which was later dubbed cyberpunk by critics. Stories written or co-written by him appear in Mirrorshades, and Burning Chrome.

John Shirley's other works of note include co-writing the screenplay for The Crow, frontman for the Portland, Oregon punk band Sado-Nation, lyricist for the Blue Oyster Cult album, "Heaven Forbid", singer/songwriter for various bands since Sadonation, including Red Star and The Panther Moderns.

So, now that you know who he is, you hopefully realize why I've made this webpage. John Shirley is a fabulous writer whose work continues to amaze me and simply doesn't get anywhere near the recognition he deserves.

Shirley is still a prolific writer, which he blames on having two ex-wives and kids to feed. His work can be hard to find, but is usually not overly expensive and definitely worth it.

Here is a more or less complete listing of his novels and short story collections. His official site has a bibliography including most of his screenplays, but does not include all of his tv and film work. Novels:

His official site, which is updated regularly, has a wealth of interviews, information, and articles at http://www.darkecho.com/JohnShirley/. Definitely worth visiting if you have any interest in cyberpunk fiction or John Shirley.
