X-Files CCG Review
X-Files CCG Review
Inspiration
The X-Files cardgames is based on the television series of the same name. In
the series, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully (both FBI agents) investigate the
so-called X-Files. Those files are about cases that have never been resolved,
cases in which the supernatural seems to play a prominent part.
Objective
Each player selects one particular card, which represents his X-File. The
X-Files has four characteristics. During the game, each player will have
opportunities to pose questions to his opponent regarding the characteristics
of the X-File. The first player to correctly identify his opponent's X-File
will win the game.
Rarity
The X-Files CCG has Ultra Rares, Rares, Uncommons and Commons. About one in
eighteen boosterpacks will contain an Ultra Rare, which are very sought
after. Production of the game has been cancelled, as the game did not turn
out to be as succesful as was expected. In the meantime, one expansion had
been published. Because of the seized production, it is quite easy to get
your hands on lots of cards really cheap. I have put up the entire
checklist for the first set of cards.
Explanation
Every player selects his own team of FBI agents to play with. These agents
will be deployed to investigate certain Sites. The sites are places where
strange things have taken place. Should the deployed team manage to actually
investigate the site, the owner of the team may ask his opponent one question
regarding his X-File. By identifying matching characteristics and crossing out
of wrong characteristics, you will have to identify the right X-File. That is
why I often explain the game as "Advanced Clue".
Naturally, each agent has his own specialty, divided in fields of science like
Information Science, Forensic Science, Medicine etc. Whenever a team of agents
tries to investigate a site, the team has to meet certain requirements in one
of the named fields. If they meet the requirements, the agents will be able
to investigate the site.
The opponent of the investigating team has ways to prevent the team from
succesfully investigating. He can use Bluff cards which will hinder the
investigation. It is also possible to play Adversaries, creatures that will
attack the agents. In this case, a combat will take place. Wounded agents
will be transported to the Hospital, which takes them out of the game for
a short while.
To enhance the powers of the Agents, it is possible to use Equipment cards,
which will improve certain skill powers, like combat strength.
To check out if I have got any cards left that you might be interested in,
