CHAPTER 1

Laren had entered her quarters with a sense of expectation. For the last 18 months, she had had a lover. It had been unexpected, but both women were at a point in the relationship where they had been considering a more permanent commitment. As she entered, the expectation turned to disappointment. Laren remembered that her lover was gone forever. It had been several weeks since she had left; but Laren would still expect to see her lover when she got off duty in the middle of the night; waiting for her in their bed, possibly asleep. But the bed was empty now. She'd been avoiding passing her lover's old quarters for just that reason. Who could she talk to? She slowly got ready for bed. As she left the shower, she could have sworn that she smelled honeysuckle.

"That's impossible," she said aloud.

Laren shook her head. Her lover's favorite fragrance had been honeysuckle. She said it was the closest fragrance around that reminded her of home. As she entered the dressing area where her robe hung, she noticed that the cologne bottle's lid was lying next to it. The bottle had been capped when she had entered the shower. Now it was open! Had she unknowingly opened the bottle as she passed? No, she hadn't. The counter in question contained her lover's fragrances and toiletries. Laren didn't have the heart to get rid of any of the items. In fact, she made it a point to stay away from that counter. Then who had opened it? Two options occurred to her: first, there was an intruder; second, her lover had returned. Her mind accepted the first option. Her heart prayed for the second to be true.

"Computer, scan my quarters. Check for any anomalous readings."

[Checking. There is one anomalous reading at your location.]

"Computer, confirm location."

[Confirmed. One anomalous reading in the dressing area at your location. Exact nature difficult to define.]

Laren began to wonder now. The computer had said that something had been; and perhaps still was; in her quarters. She reached for the palm-sized phaser all personnel kept in their quarters. With the phaser set on stun, she moved slowly toward the door which led from her dressing room to her bedroom. In her heart of hearts, she prayed that her hunch was correct. She carefully opened her mind as she'd been taught. When she felt the familiar touch, she smiled. She had returned to Laren.

"Deanna! You've come back to me," said Laren.

Laren turned the corner and there before her stood Deanna. Several weeks earlier they had said goodbye for what they had thought was the last time. Now Deanna had returned. Could it be true or was she hallucinating? Should she call security or just accept that Deanna had returned?

"You won't need the phaser Laren."

"Computer, confirm the number of sentient life forms in my quarters," said Laren.

[There is one sentient life form. However, the earlier anomalous reading is currently registering 3 meters from life form.]

"The computer can't detect me Laren. You heard it. I'm an anomalous reading to it. I've missed you too. That's why I've returned. I knew you would recognize the honeysuckle. That's why I opened it. I didn't want to frighten you by just appearing."

Laren didn't know how to react. She still held the phaser in her hand. Part of her wanted to wrap Deanna in her arms. Another part wasn't sure if Deanna was solid. As if in answer to all her questions, Deanna came forward and hugged Laren. A familiar warmth filled Laren as Deanna held her. It started in her throat and made its way down to her loins. Deanna could feel her lover react to her touch and appearance. She reached up and brought Laren's lips down to her own. It was gentle, just like the first time they had kissed. Then it became more intense. Both women began to feel the first tingling of sexual arousal.

"Deanna, how can you be here? I don't understand," said Laren after a time.

The phaser had long since fallen to the floor. They hadn't moved from the middle of the bedroom where they stood wrapped in each other's arms. Laren was stroking Deanna's cheek and neck as they spoke.

"It doesn't matter really; does it? I'm here and I love you very much. I came because I felt you calling to me. I can't stay for a long time but I'll be here for a few hours."

Deanna was wearing the white gown she had worn the day she disappeared. The "bracelets" of her office were still on her wrists. She sensed that Laren was a bit uneasy about Deanna's reappearance. After all, she had said that she would never be able to return to her in a solid form. What was going on? How was this happening? Just then, Laren's door chime rang. It wasn't really that late, but she wasn't expecting anyone. Also, how would she explain Deanna's return to her visitor? Before Laren could decide what to do, Deanna moved to the door and released the security code.

"Come in Guinan. I've been expecting you."

Laren had forgotten about Deanna's new powers. She could sense Guinan's presence now. But Guinan's appearance was something of a surprise. As she entered Laren's quarters, Guinan acknowledged Laren with a simple nod.

"Leader, how may I help you?" asked Guinan, as she bowed to Deanna.

Apparently, Guinan had been summoned by Deanna. Laren was surprised at the title that Guinan used for addressing Deanna. But then again, Deanna was the new leader of the Betazed Women of Power. However, even Laren was taken by surprise at Guinan's appearance as well as her use of protocol.

"Guinan, I need your help and advice. How can I remain with my Sisters when my heart is constantly being drawn back here to Laren?"

"Deanna, you accepted the leadership fully aware of your duties and that you would have to leave everything and everyone you once loved. You can't just say 'I made a mistake'. You've never backed away from anything in your life. I know you love Laren very much. Your new powers allow you to be anywhere in time. You will always be able to appear to Laren whenever you wish. You'll both know when it's time to end the visits. Now, if you will excuse me; I'm sure you have much to discuss. Lieutenant Ro; Leader Troi."

With that, Guinan left Deanna and Laren alone. They did have much to discuss. But Laren didn't know how to say what she was feeling. She loved Deanna so much. She had never allowed anyone to get that close to her. She had never opened her heart to anyone. But she had opened it to Deanna Troi and now the pain she felt was almost more than she could bear. Laren knew that Deanna would have to leave again soon. But perhaps they could have the night they couldn't have before.

As if reading Laren's thoughts, she began to undo Laren's robe. At the same time, they moved toward Laren's bed. As she exposed Laren's skin, Deanna began to gently kiss it. As she reacted to Deanna's lips, Laren reached up and undid Deanna's gown at the neck. The women progressed slowly. It was as if they were lovers for the first time again. Their lovemaking was gentle but also had an urgency about it. They both knew that Deanna would soon have to leave.

"Deanna, I wish you didn't have to leave. I know you do; but I still wish you didn't have to," said Laren.

"I do too. But I have to leave soon. There is something we need to discuss before I go."

The women were still in Laren's bed. They had just satisfied each other and were stroking and caressing each other. Troi was resting her head against Laren's breast as Laren held her close. There was something Deanna needed to tell Laren about her new powers. She wasn't sure how Laren would react to what she would say.

"Laren, I need to tell you something about my new powers," Troi said as she sat up.

She leaned against the headboard as she spoke.

"You know my empathic and telepathic abilities have increased. Also, the latent telekinetic abilities I had were increased as well. But I recently discovered that I also have the ability to impregnate some of the Sisterhood. I was shocked that I had this ability. But once I accepted that this ability was also part of my new powers, I wondered whether that was why there had never been any record of other women being chosen."

Laren sat up by now too. She was leaning her head on her knees and had her hands wrapped around her legs. Troi recognized it as Laren's contemplative position.

"Cassandra had the ability. Three of the women are products of this type of procreation. This is something that I never expected to be able to do. It never occurred to me. It's probably the most overwhelming thing I've ever had to do. I'm not sure if I can do it."

Laren had been listening carefully to what Deanna had told her. Troi leaned forward to see Laren's face and her reaction to what she'd just said. She wondered if she had scared her lover. Now she got a look on her face that Deanna interpreted as fear. Troi gently probed Laren's mind. She didn't find fear; but she did find questions. Laren wondered if Deanna had the ability to impregnate other species (possibly herself).

"Deanna, remember when we were together before you left? We had been considering a commitment ceremony and possibly a family together. Would it be possible for us to hold that ceremony even though you'll be leaving me soon? I'm willing to take those vows with you, if you still wish it. I still love you so much. You know my heart and soul. You know what I say is true. I want to be your life partner and bear any children we may wish to have. The only thing I need to do is to return home to Bajor."

Deanna had known that Laren would make that announcement. The day they had said goodbye, Laren had said that she wouldn't be able to remain on the Enterprise after Deanna had left. But to hear Laren repeat that statement made her realize that she would be asking the Captain for a transfer.

"I've been thinking about this for a long time. I was going to go to the Captain and request a transfer to the space station located there. I once said that I wouldn't be able to remain on the Enterprise for long once you'd gone. Now I'm not sure. But I need to focus on the way things are. I have friends who are stationed on DS9. We fought the Cardassians together. And I won't be alone. Chief O'Brien is there now. He's serving as Chief of Operations. Also, I know the First Officer. She helped me during my days with the ShaaKar. I need to go home for awhile right now."

Laren had been watching Deanna's face as she spoke. She was also probing Deanna's thoughts and feelings as she had been taught. Laren could feel Deanna's love for her, but there was also a sadness just beyond it. It seemed to come from her announcement that she would leave the Enterprise. Deanna could feel Laren's probe. She knew that the emotion within her for Laren was strong. But even though she could now impregnate her Sisters; she wasn't sure whether she could impregnate Laren. She wanted the ceremony and she also wanted to leave behind her own offspring within Laren's body.

Subtly, Deanna began to put Laren to sleep. As she did, Deanna began to kiss Laren in order to stimulate her lover. It didn't take much stimulation for Laren to become aroused again. Deanna also insured that a fertile egg would be in place for fertilization. She wanted to have this child too. Deanna took Laren's nipples into her mouth one by one. Laren arched her back in response to the pressure Deanna imposed on her breasts. Laren felt herself begin to float above the bed. Deanna positioned herself between Laren's legs and began to suck and lick her clitoris and vagina. When Deanna felt that Laren was about to climax, she positioned herself so that her own clitoris was inserted into Laren's vagina.

When she felt the penetration, Laren gasped. It felt as though Deanna's own clitoris has grown enough to impregnate Laren. Troi wrapped her arms around her lover and kissed her lips and throat. Laren and Deanna climaxed as one being. Troi knew that Laren was now pregnant with their child. After being lovers for so long, Laren could read Deanna's thoughts very well. To insure that Laren wouldn't know that she was pregnant yet, Deanna shielded her thoughts from her lover for the first time since they began the lessons on telepathy.

As they slept, Deanna began to feel herself being pulled away. Before she disappeared, Deanna left Laren two messages on computer chips that she could replay on her personal viewscreen. Deanna inserted the first chip. She could feel herself becoming less and less solid. She had to concentrate to remain solid enough for the computer to pick up her image.

"Laren my darling. By the time you hear this, I will be gone. We both knew that this would happen. Know that I will always love you. I'm sorry that I couldn't say goodbye to you the way I wanted to; but know that I didn't want to go this way. No matter where you go or what you do, know that I will come to you when your heart calls me.

"I know we never actually said the words to each other before I left, but I want you to hear them now. I, Deanna Troi; take you, Ro Laren; to be my life partner. I will love you always. And if you find someone new, then know that I will not hold you to this vow.

"When you get to the space station, say hello to Chief O'Brien for me. Goodbye my love."

After turning off the screen temporarily, Deanna looked back toward the sleeping figure. She went into the dressing room and picked up the bottle of honeysuckle cologne. Bringing it into the bedroom, Deanna opened it and left it sitting on the end table. Then she had the replicator produce two wedding bands for them. Deanna slid one on her own finger. Deanna returned to the viewscreen. Turning it back on, Deanna removed the first computer chip and inserted the second.

She initiated her own personal lock-out code so that the second message could not be accessed until a certain time. Deanna was considered on extended leave and was still able to access the computer and use her security codes to lock-out certain messages. The message would automatically play exactly two weeks from the time of her departure. Deanna also left a golden wedding band for Laren. The mate was on her own finger. She turned the viewer back on and began recording once again.

"Laren, there is something else you need to know. The night that we made love, I learned that I could impregnate you. You are now carrying our child. When you reach the station, the medical exam will reveal your pregnancy. I don't know how you'll explain it. I'm sorry if I caused you any problems; but we both wanted this commitment. The ring you wear will show the love I have for you no matter what. Goodbye my darling. I love you."

Deanna bent down and gave her lover a kiss goodbye. Laren shifted in her sleep. She wouldn't be able to access the second message until she was well on her way to DS9. Deanna slowly vanished; leaving her life partner (and unborn daughter) behind.

When Laren awoke, the scent of honeysuckle filled the room. She opened her mind but Deanna was gone. She picked up the bottle and put the lid back on. Laren noticed that the viewscreen was blinking that there were two messages waiting. Putting down the bottle, Laren turned on the message. A tear rolled down her cheek as she watched her lover on the screen. As the message ended, Laren noticed the wedding band next to the screen. Slipping it on her finger, she smiled. This message was Deanna's way of finalizing their commitment to each other. The computer screen said that there was a second message waiting.

"Computer, play second message."

[Unable to comply. There is a lock-out on the message.]

"Who locked out the message?"

[The lock-out was initiated by Lieutenant Commander Deanna Troi. Access denied until Stardate 73994.56.]

Laren began to wonder what the message was. She showered and slipped into her uniform. She was now sure that her decision to go to DS9 was the correct one. The ring she wore increased that resolve. She would speak with the Captain. When she arrived on the Bridge to relieve Ensign Johnson at helm, Commander Riker was already there. He noticed her appearance seemed different. She seemed to have a new confidence in her step. He figured that perhaps the fact that she'd earned her j.g. pip just a couple of weeks before had something to do with it.

As the day went on, Laren requested to see the Captain at his convenience when her duties permitted. She was deciding whether to tell Captain Picard everything. Her heart said that he would need to know sooner or later. When she got off duty, she headed for the Captain's Ready Room. Picard heard the chime and acknowledged it.

"Come!" he said.

"Captain Picard, I'd like to speak with you if I may," said Laren as she entered.

"Of course Lieutenant. What seems to be the problem?"

"Captain, I know this is unusual; but I'd like to request a transfer to the space station orbiting Bajor. I need to go home and I believe I can be of help there."

Captain Picard sat quietly sipping his Earl Grey tea as he listened to what Laren was saying. Her career was becoming better again. She had risen to the rank of Lieutenant j.g. Now she wanted to leave. But it didn't sound as though she was running away. He knew that DS9 was in need of more fine officers. But he needed to know more before he would agree to her request.

"Lieutenant, may I ask why you want to leave? You're beginning to re-attain your rank and your confidence has definitely improved. What's going on?"

Laren took a deep breath. She seemed to hear Troi say that it was all right to tell Captain Picard about their relationship.

"Captain, Deanna returned last night. I don't know if I should tell you this; but you requested an explanation. Remember when Deanna had her accident? You had seen us in Ten Forward that night."

Picard thought a moment. It had been over two years since that incident. It had been just after the incident when Deanna had to take over as Captain. He acknowledged her statement with a nod.

"Deanna had figured out something about my personal life. I am a lesbian. Deanna and I have been lovers since just after her accident until she disappeared. But she returned to me last night. When she left me again, this ring was left behind. It was hard for us to keep it from you sir. Deanna thought of you as a father. I wanted to make sure that you did not regret your confidence in me.

"We both wanted you to know what was going on. I want you to know Captain that we love each other deeply. That's what this ring I'm wearing means. Deanna left it for me. I saw her wearing its mate in the message she left me. I wouldn't request a transfer if it wasn't necessary to that commitment. I hope you'll grant my request sir."

Jean-Luc Picard listened carefully to what Laren had been saying. For all intents and purposes; from what she had just said; she and Deanna had become life partners. He only regretted that he had not performed the ceremony himself. As ship's Captain, it was within his duties; as well as it being his most enjoyable prerogative. Besides, in the here and now; that type of commitment was considered legally binding, just as a marriage between members of the opposite sex was. However, even in the 24th Century, there were still those who would regard homosexuals as a pariah. 'Some things never change', he thought to himself. How would Captain Picard react to what she'd just said?

[It's all right Laren. He understands.]

Laren heard Deanna's voice in her mind. She smiled slightly. Troi hadn't quite left. She'd stayed until after Laren went to Picard. His European background had provided some understanding. In her mind she seemed to hear Deanna say that the Captain did understand. Captain Picard returned his cup to its saucer and spoke.

"Request granted Lieutenant. I know it was difficult for you to tell me what you just did. I must admit that I had my suspicions; but you were both very discreet. I doubt that anyone knew about you and Deanna. You have proved yourself a fine officer. I knew that when you were willing to put your career on the line for what you believed was right; and I will give Commander Sisko my highest recommendation regarding your abilities."

Captain Picard rose and came around his desk. He took Lieutenant Ro's hand in his and squeezed gently. Laren rose as well to leave the Captain's Ready Room.

"Thank you sir. I'm glad you talked me into remaining on board. I'll never forget your faith in me. I hope I can justify your trust in allowing me to leave."

"Good luck Lieutenant."

"Thank you Captain."

Laren left the Ready Room and returned to her quarters. Captain Picard summoned Commander Riker.

"Commander Riker, please come to my Ready Room," he said.

"Aye sir. You have the Bridge Mr. Data," Riker said as he left.

"Aye sir," said Data, moving to the vacated center seat.

"You wished to see me Captain?" asked Will as he entered.

"Yes Number One. I have just granted Lieutenant Ro Laren a transfer to DS9. The reasons were personal Will, so don't ask. How long will it take us to get to the planet Bajor?"

"About 7 weeks at Warp 6. However, Starbase 439 is about 4 days away. It gets a lot of cargo and transport ships going to Bajor on supply runs. Perhaps we could drop Lieutenant Ro off there and arrange a passage on the next vessel heading for Bajor."

"See to it Will. I'll contact Commander Sisko and inform him that he's getting a new tactical officer for his staff."

"Aye sir."

As Will left the Ready Room, Captain Picard had Lieutenant Worf contact DS9.

CHAPTER 2

"Commander, there's a message coming in on subspace. It's Captain Picard of the Enterprise," reported Kira.

It had been months since the last time the Enterprise had contacted the station.

"Pipe it through Major," said Sisko.

"Commander Sisko, this is Captain Picard. May I speak with you?"

"Of course Captain. What can I do for you?"

Kira had entered Sisko's office with a report on staff needs since the last Cardassian raid. He motioned for Kira to stay.

"Commander, one of my officers has requested a transfer to your station. Her name is Lieutenant j.g. Ro Laren. She is a Bajoran. Her reasons for the request are private; therefore, I will not discuss them. However, she is a fine officer and I'm sure that you will find her very competent."

"Laren's returning home?!" Kira said half to herself.

"One moment Captain," Sisko said as he hit the mute button.

Commander Sisko turned to his First Officer. Apparently she knew this person.

"Major, you know this officer?"

"I knew a young woman named Ro Laren once. We were in the ShaaKar together. I had lost track of her. We were once very close; but her temper was a match for mine. If she's a Starfleet officer, then she must have tamed it somehow. Chief O'Brien probably knows her if she's coming from the Enterprise crew. Maybe he can tell you more," she suggested.

"This Lieutenant Ro has requested a transfer to the station. Could we use her?" Sisko asked.

"Yes sir. That last skirmish with the Cardies cost us a member of our tactical staff. She could fill the empty slot."

"Very well. I'll tell Captain Picard. And tell Chief O'Brien I'd like to see him."

Kira acknowledged the order and left the two commanding officers to themselves.

"Sorry for the delay Captain," Sisko said as he turned the sound back on, "but I needed to speak with my First Officer. We do have a gap in our tactical staff courtesy of the Cardassians. We could use a first-rate officer. We'll be expecting her."

"Thank you Commander. We'll be dropping her off at Starbase 439 in about 4 days. The next ship on its way to Bajor will have her aboard. Picard out."

When the screen darkened, Sisko found O'Brien at the door. He motioned for the Irishman to come into his office.

"Chief, how much do you know about a Bajoran Starfleet officer named Ro Laren?"

Chief O'Brien raised his eyebrows and looked stunned. How would Commander Sisko know who Ensign Ro Laren was? And why would he be asking him about her? Commander Sisko motioned for O'Brien to have a seat.

"The reason I'm asking Chief is because she's transferring to the station. Captain Picard recommended her highly and apparently Major Kira knows her as well. What I want to know is your impression of her abilities. You did serve together I assume."

It took Miles a few minutes to let what Commander Sisko had said sink in. Ensign Ro Laren was coming to DS9?! Not many officers transferred off the Enterprise. On the contrary, it always seemed like every officer was hoping to be posted to the Enterprise. To serve aboard the flagship of Starfleet meant that you were the best in your field.

"Chief, is there something wrong? Do you think this Lieutenant Ro will be a hindrance to us?" asked Sisko.

"I'm sorry sir. I was just thinking about the things she did. She helped save the Enterprise before I left. Lieutenant Commander Troi, Ensign Ro and I were on the Bridge when the accident occurred. The helmsman and OOD had been killed. Ensign Ro used some 'unorthodox' methods to re-route power to the Bridge controls. She's a good officer."

Just then it occurred to O'Brien that Sisko had called Ro Laren by the rank of Lieutenant.

"Excuse me Commander, did you say Lieutenant Ro Laren?"

"That's correct Chief. She's a Lieutenant j.g. to be exact."

"Well I'll be damned. Good for her. One thing Commander; I know you'll get her service record. Don't hold anything against her. If Captain Picard says she's OK, then you can be sure that she'll be an asset to us."

"Thank you Chief," said Sisko.

Chief O'Brien left Commander Sisko's office. When he passed Major Kira on his way to his station, she called to him. He had a feeling it was about Ro Laren. Even before she got there, she was going to be the topic of conversation. He stopped at the central console where Kira oversaw the control of DS9.

"Chief, do you have a minute?" she asked.

"Of course Major. How can I help you?"

"How well did you know Ro Laren? The young woman I knew was rather headstrong and prone to leaping first and then praying that she wouldn't fall when she landed."

As she finished, she realized that she had been just like that herself before she was assigned to DS9. Sisko had helped her temper her impulsiveness. Perhaps Laren had as well.

"When I left, she had helped save the Enterprise when we were severely damaged. I think she managed to find a way to put her impulsiveness to good use. Did you know her well Major?"

"Yes I did Chief; very well indeed."

Chief O'Brien noticed that Kira had a look on her face that said that she was thinking of a past memory. Not wishing to disturb that remembrance, Chief O'Brien began to turn back toward his station. As if waking from a dream, Kira noticed O'Brien move away.

"I'm sorry Chief. I didn't mean to drift off like that."

"It's all right Major. She must have been very special to you," he said.

"Yes she was. We ..............."

Kira didn't want to reveal the nature of hers and Laren's relationship when they were both young. She wondered if Laren still had the same feelings about her. Or had Laren found someone new in her life? Soon Major Kira Nerys would find out just how Ro Laren felt about her. But it would be at least a couple of months before she'd see Laren again.

  CHAPTER 3

The Enterprise had reached Starbase 439. They were trying to find out when the next transport was arriving to take supplies to DS9. Fortunately, there was one arriving in about a week. Captain Picard arranged for Ro Laren to get a ride to the station. Laren was in Ten Forward when the message arrived that it was time for her to go. The items in her quarters had been crated and already transported to the station cargo hold with the other crates which were enroute to DS9.

All her personal belongings were in the case that was leaning against the chair. In it was a little ceramic doll; a picture of her mother that she had drawn when she and three others had been turned into children; as well as her family clan medallion. It also included Troi's honeysuckle cologne and the computer chips with Deanna's messages transcribed onto them. Across from her sat Guinan.

"I never really had a chance to thank you for helping me when I first arrived on board. No one else would believe me about what was going on," Laren said as she sipped at her drink.

"Captain Picard believed you."

"Only after you intervened," Laren countered.

"Picard trusts my judgment; just as he trusts his command staff. But he still has to have trust in you. He wouldn't have given you that second pip promoting you to Lieutenant j.g. if you hadn't earned that trust."

"I suppose so. But, with Deanna gone, I know now that I can't stay here. It's too painful for me to be here. There are too many memories."

"I understand. I hope you find the peace you need at DS9."

"Lieutenant Ro, report to Transporter Room 4."

It was Captain Picard. It was time for Lieutenant j.g. Ro Laren to leave the Enterprise. She rose and picked up her case. Laren turned and held out her hand to the woman who had befriended her in the beginning; to the confidante and friend she was now. Guinan rose and took the hand of the young woman who had been so frightened and closed off when they had first met; to the confident woman who was now moving on to another life. As Guinan took her hand, she sensed another presence as well. Laren noticed that Guinan had an odd look on her usually serene face.

"What's wrong Guinan? You have a strange look on your face."

"It's nothing. I just had a strange feeling, that's all. You'd better be going. Good luck Lieutenant. And don't forget to unwind once in a while; even if it means jumping on your bed," Guinan said as she smiled.

"Thank you Guinan. Goodbye."

Ro Laren released Guinan's hand and; putting the strap on her shoulder; turned and left the lounge. As the door whooshed closed, Guinan turned and faced the leader of the Betazed Women of Power as she appeared.

"Deanna, does Laren know that she's pregnant?"

"No, not yet. By the time she reaches DS9, she'll know."

"Do you think that was wise? She was just beginning to become more confident again."

"It was something that we had been considering anyway. I knew that when we were together that night that both of us wanted this. I have the power to impregnate. You know how much we love each other."

"I noticed that she was wearing a wedding band. I see you wear its mate. You held a commitment ceremony that night as well?! You were both willing to take those vows; knowing that you would be separated by your duties and her own mortality!?!"

"Yes we were. I must go now. Thank you for not telling her that I was here; or that she is pregnant. Goodbye Guinan."

"Goodbye Deanna. I hope Laren understands and does well at DS9. Be well Leader Troi."

Deanna nodded and dissolved into the ethereal vacuum where she would always reside; virtually immortal.

CHAPTER 4

Lieutenant j.g. Ro Laren was in the quarters to which she had been assigned on the U.S.S. Merlin which was transporting needed medical and computer supplies to Bajor and DS9. They had been traveling for nearly one month. It had been just over four weeks since she had seen Deanna for the last time. It would be another three weeks before they would arrive at DS9. Even though she had pretty much kept to herself; more out of habit than necessity; Laren had attracted the attention of the ship's Counselor. She spotted the young Lieutenant sitting by herself in their ship's lounge.

"May I join you Lieutenant?" asked the voice.

Ro Laren looked up to see Lieutenant Commander Lee May K'Mpel standing across from her. When she had arrived, the viewscreen had provided her with an overview of the senior command staff. Laren recognized the officer before her. Apparently; according to the ship's bio; the Merlin's Counselor was half-Betazoid, half-Bajoran. Laren wondered if this Counselor had the same abilities as Deanna had. Laren was about to find out just how astute this ship's Counselor really was.

"Are you all right Lieutenant?" she asked.

Apparently, Laren had a perplexed look on her face. Lee May's question had shaken her out of her reverie.

"I'm sorry Counselor, what did you say?" asked Laren as she shook her head.

"May I join you Lieutenant? My name is Lee May K'Mpel. I'm the ship's Counselor for the Merlin. May I?"

Lee May indicated the chair that she was leaning her hand on. Laren nodded that the officer could sit. As Lee May sat down, she sensed the conflict within the young woman. It would be difficult to broach the subject, but the fear was there.

"Lieutenant, I don't mean to disturb you; but I've been sensing some disturbing problems from you since you arrived. I've been hoping that I wouldn't need to bother you; but I've reached a point where I felt that I needed to speak with you. Do you mind if we talk for a few minutes?"

"Not at all Counselor. Would you care for anything?"

A motion from Laren brought a waiter to the table. After both women ordered dinner, they began to talk.

"I understand that you requested a transfer from the Enterprise to DS9. Before you ask, the Captain spoke with me about your request. We don't usually have passengers on our trips," she said as she put up her hand to stop the question on Laren's face. "I also did a little research myself. You've done well since you joined the Enterprise. Why did you leave? I'd been trying to transfer there since I heard that their Counselor has gone on extended sabbatical and may not return," she concluded.

"The reasons are personal Counselor. I realize that you're half-Betazoid and can sense my feelings, but I do appreciate your concern."

Lee May tried to "read" the young woman.

{{Would you please stop your probe?}}

She suddenly got a surprised look on her face. The young Lieutenant "spoke" to her telepathically, requesting that she stop. It was a surprise to Lee. Full-blooded Bajorans were not normally telepathic by nature. Someone must have taught her.

"Who trained you in telepathy Lieutenant? I didn't expect you to answer me telepathically. I apologize for the attempted probe."

"There's no need to apologize Counselor. I was trained by my life partner. I know that you're only trying to help."

The waiter returned with their dinner orders. When he left, the women continued their conversation.

"I notice you wear a wedding band Lieutenant, but you don't mention a husband. You used the term 'life partner'. May I ask if you are married?"

"Yes I am, but my partner is unable to join me at this time. I may be joined later; but I can't explain any more at this time. Do you mind?"

The two officers finished their dinner. Lee May could sense that Laren was withholding information. She understood the feeling. Lee May had had to hide behind the same type of curtain herself for many years. She was just now beginning to reveal herself to her fellow command staff members. The captain had been aware of her orientation for the last three years. Lee May realized that Lieutenant Ro Laren was a lesbian. But then again; so was Lieutenant Commander Lee May K'Mpel.

She was sure Laren knew that they were kindreds. If Laren wore a ring; then they could be friends, but nothing more. Perhaps because of the location, Laren would open up a bit more when they left. As they walked along the corridors toward the guest quarters, Lee May broached the topic both women had been skirting for the past couple of hours. They had reached the quarters that Ro Laren had been assigned to. She released the security lock and entered.

"Would you mind if I come in for a moment Lieutenant? I have something to say and I believe that we'll be more comfortable in the privacy of your quarters."

"Of course Counselor. Please come in," Laren said as she stepped aside.

As the door whooshed closed, Lee May K'Mpel retrieved a necklace from under her uniform. It held several rings that were in the colors of the rainbow. Also there were two charms: one was a pink triangle made of rose quartz; the other was the Greek symbol lambda. Laren didn't seem surprised. It was as if she knew that Lee May was a lesbian as well. Lee May hoped that her relationship would put Laren more at ease and more free to discuss her enigmatic journey to DS9.

"Now can we talk about it? Why are you going to DS9?"

"I'm not sure that I can explain it so that either of us will understand. Perhaps this will be easier for both of us."

Laren picked up the first chip that Deanna had recorded. She inserted the chip and hit the button. When the image of Deanna Troi came on, Lee May finally understood. The wedding band that Laren wore was the mate to the one she noticed on Deanna's finger. So that was it! Deanna and Laren were life partners. Lee May wondered about the second chip she noticed.

Lee May recognized the ship's Counselor of the U.S.S. Enterprise. They had attended Starfleet Academy together. In fact, they had been roommates. Lee May had always been a lesbian, but thought that Deanna Troi had been out of reach. To find out that Deanna had finally acknowledged her orientation as a lesbian was rather a surprise though. Ro Laren must have been quite special to be able to awaken the possibility that Deanna would have a female lover.

"Have you played the second chip yet?"

"Not yet. I'm not sure that I want to know what's on it. But I suppose I should. The lock-out that Deanna put on it should release now."

Laren picked up the second chip and inserted it into the viewer slot. Just as she was about to touch the button that played the message, Laren began to feel sick to her stomach. As she headed for the bathroom, Lee May sensed the new life within the young officer. Lee May wondered if Laren knew. Perhaps the news was on that second computer chip.

When Ro Laren returned, she found Lee May looking around. Even though she was only hitching a ride, Laren had tried to make her quarters as comfortable as possible. Lee May had picked up and opened the bottle of honeysuckle cologne. She was sniffing its contents. She had a faraway look on her face; as if reliving a memory.

"Could you put that down please?" said Laren when she saw what Lee was holding.

"I'm sorry Lieutenant. I didn't mean to intrude. It just reminds me of Betazed. Are you all right?" Lee asked as she put the bottle down.

Laren nodded that she was. Ro Laren made her way back to the desk. After she touched the viewer, she found herself standing next to Lee May. When Deanna finished her revelation about Laren's pregnancy, Lee May gave her an enigmatic look. Laren had taken Lee's arms and wrapped them around her own waist; as if to support her. Laren could feel Lee May attempting to probe Laren's thoughts. This time Laren did not object.

She would need all the support she could get now. Laren was going into a state of shock at the news that she was pregnant. Lee guided Laren to the sofa and made her sit down. Lee knelt beside her as Laren continued to hang on to Lee's hands as if she were holding on to a lifeline.

"Laren, are you going to be all right? I can stay for awhile if you want and we can talk. You and Deanna obviously had something very special as lovers. I know you're feeling confused right now. I think I'd better be going. My office is on Deck 12. Come see me tomorrow if you need to. Good night Lieutenant."

With that, Lieutenant Commander Lee May K'Mpel; ship's Counselor of the U.S.S. Merlin; left Lieutenant j.g. Ro Laren alone to think about how she would explain to everyone at her new duty station that she was now pregnant. Lee had reached the floor where her quarters were located and headed for her room. All of a sudden; on Deck 9; Laren felt a spasm of pain. As she fell, she mentally reached out for Deanna and Lee May. Lee May heard the mental call for help. As she headed for Laren's quarters, she contacted Sickbay.

"Medical emergency; Deck 9; Room 1637; guest quarters of Lieutenant Ro Laren."

When Lee May reached the room, she was unable to get in. She had to override the door's security code.

"Computer, override security lock; override code K'Mpel 1974BA."

As the door whooshed open, Lee May found Laren unconscious. She was being held by a ghostly figure of a woman about Laren's age. Then Lee May recognized the face of the "ghost"; DEANNA TROI!!!

"DEANNA!! It can't be!! What are you doing here? How did you get here?"

It took Deanna a moment to recognize the woman in the doorway. She gently put Laren's head down and stood to get a better look at the other woman. Lee May came into the room and began to smile. It had been a long time since the women had seen one another.

"Lee May K'Mpel! It's been a long time. Or should I say Lieutenant Commander?! What brings you here?"

Deanna reached out to take Lee May's hand. Lee took it. She noticed the "bracelets" that Deanna bore on her wrists; the symbols of her office. 'The "ghost" feels solid enough', thought Lee May.

"Laren called out to me when she collapsed. I assume she called for you as well. I'm the ship's Counselor for this vessel. There's a medical team on the way. I don't think they should find you here. I saw the messages. Laren showed them to me. You must love her very much."

They heard the door chime sound.

"You'd better go."

Lee May watched Deanna vanish and then opened the door. Chief Medical Officer Cher Schleigh was in the doorway with two med-techs and an anti-grav gurney. She wondered what Lee May was doing there but figured questions could wait until later. She pulled out a tricorder and began to scan the unconscious figure on the floor. The readings indicated that she was pregnant and experiencing difficulties with it. The possibility of miscarriage was seriously threatening.

"Let's get her to Sickbay! She's losing the fetus."

The med-techs lifted Ro Laren onto the gurney and headed for Sickbay. Doctor Schleigh stayed behind for a moment to question the ship's Counselor. They began to head for the door.

"Did you know she was pregnant Lee?"

"I just found out a little while ago. Will she be all right Cher? She and I have a mutual friend. I'm sorry, but I can't say any more. The information was given in confidence."

Doctor Schleigh nodded her head in understanding. Cher was familiar with the doctor/patient confidentiality rule. The women headed toward Sickbay to see how Laren was doing. As they entered, Cher's head nurse handed her a PADD. The read-out indicated that Laren's vital signs had stabilized and was still pregnant. Doctor Schleigh breathed a sigh of relief as she handed the PADD to Counselor K'Mpel. She moved toward the biobed.

Laren was resting comfortably and appeared to be sleeping. Lee May touched Laren's forehead and smiled. She sensed Deanna's presence in the room. No wonder Laren was still pregnant. Lee May looked up and thought that she saw a wisp of smoke or mist, but it vanished.

[Deanna, can you hear me? I know you saved her life. Meet me in my quarters on Deck 6 in a few minutes.]

"Will she be all right Cher?" asked Lee May.

"She seems to be doing all right. I'll keep her here and check on her in the morning. I'll let you know if there are any changes in her condition. Right now though, I prescribe sleep for you. Good night Lee," said Cher as she headed Lee May to the door.

"Good night Cher; and thank you."

Doctor Cher Schleigh nodded her head and turned back into her office.

  CHAPTER 5

Counselor Lee May K'Mpel headed for her quarters on Deck 6 once again. This time to meet with Deanna. When she arrived, she could already sense Deanna's presence in the room. The door slid open to reveal Deanna seated on the couch awaiting her old Academy friend. She knew that Lee would have a great many questions and she was willing to provide all the answers.

"Hello Lee."

"Hello Deanna. I was hoping that you would already be here when I arrived. I need to speak with you about Laren."

"I know. I'm sorry that you got caught in the middle of this. Obviously, you know of our relationship and Laren's condition."

"Yes. As I said, she showed me the messages you had left her. The second one seemed to startle her; as if she didn't know what was going on. She didn't know until she played that message for me that she was pregnant, did she?"

"No, she didn't. She's been pregnant over two months now. There is something else that we need to talk about; you and I. Remember when we were growing up together? You mother; like mine; was Betazoid and both our fathers were off-worlders. I think I always suspected that you were gay; but you frightened me. But I was still attracted to you.

"It took me a long time to admit to myself that I needed the companionship of a woman. That's when Laren entered my life. I love her very much. So much so that we were willing to risk everything for this child. Do you remember the legends about the Betazed Women of Power? The women our mothers used to call 'The Ancient Ones'?"

Lee had to think back a few moments. She had remembered the stories she had been told as she was growing up. Then she looked more closely at Deanna's wrists. She'd thought the designs she'd noticed were bracelets. But now, looking closer; she realized that the bracelets didn't move. They appeared to be more like tattoos. Then she recognized the symbols. They represented the twelve matriarchal houses of Betazed society. Her expression showed her thoughts even before she spoke.

"OH MY GOD!!"

"You aren't going to faint on me, are you? I can't access your communications in this state. The computer would consider me an anomalous reading; a 'glitch' if you will. I don't register."

"Deanna, you mean to tell me that you're one of them: the Women of Power?!"

"I'm their Leader. I was involuntarily recruited. These symbols appeared almost two years ago. It took over a year to become fully acclimated to the powers that came with the office; powers beyond anything even our mothers have. But Laren and I both wanted this child. She'll be fine now."

"I was right then. That 'mist' I saw in Sickbay was you, wasn't it?"

Deanna nodded her head in acknowledgment. Lee was sensing Deanna's enormous powers. It was as if the room throbbed with it. Then it seemed to lessen, as if Deanna had "turned down" the intensity; but there was something beginning to stir within Lee May K'Mpel. It had begun when she had seen the image of Deanna on the viewscreen. She had fallen in love with the young psychologist who was in the same class as she. Even when they had been in college together, Lee had been attracted to her.

Lee had arrived on Betazed when she was about 12 years old. Until then, she and her mother had been prisoners of the Cardassian Empire. Lee's father had been a member of the Bajoran resistance. When he was killed, friends had smuggled Lee and her mother through the Cardassian lines and back into Federation territory. Then they had made their way to Betazed where she grew up. When both women had applied to Starfleet Academy, they hoped to be put in the same class. Through their days at the Academy, Lee continued to find more and more to love about Deanna Troi. But she never revealed her feelings to Deanna back then.

Troi had been seeing a young Lieutenant named William Riker in those days. Now Troi was here, but still out of reach. Deanna wore a wedding band. Deanna sensed Lee's feelings and began to redden. They had read one another's mind regarding their own feelings toward each other. It became awkward for them for a few moments. Deanna stood and moved toward the center of the sitting room.

"What's wrong Deanna? Don't you trust me? I'm not foolish enough to try and destroy what you and Laren have. She must have something very special. She told me you trained her in telepathy," said Lee as she shifted topics when she saw Deanna blush again.

"Yes I did. She had some latent ability. It was easy to teach her to use it. It surprised you that she answered you with her mind, didn't it?"

"Yes it did. Remember, I'm half-Bajoran and we normally don't have a great deal of telepathic ability. Her potential must have surprised even you."

"It certainly did. At one point; before we began our affair; we both had the same dreams. It was eerie; even to me. Not long after that we became lovers. It's been very fulfilling for both of us. Now my new powers .......... and the duties .......... that go a ......... long with ........... them have .......... made it diffi .......... cult .........."

"Deanna, are you all right?"

Lee May had gotten up and moved toward Deanna. Troi looked as though she were going to pass out. Deanna's eyes closed and she began to slip to the floor. Lee caught Deanna in her arms and held her. Lee could feel the lightness of Deanna's body. It was as though she could feel Deanna dissolving away. How could she help her friend? Moving to the bedroom, she laid Deanna on her bed and took her hand as she knelt beside the bed; bringing her head level with Troi's.

[Deanna, can you hear me? Use my strength to sustain you until you get stronger. I can feel your strength draining. It's all right. Don't be afraid to tap my strength. I'm not afraid. Don't worry about me. You need the strength I can give you. Take what you need my love.]

Lee knelt on the side of the bed; her elbows propping her up. She could feel a link forming between herself and Deanna. Little by little, she could feel Deanna getting stronger as she grew weaker. It didn't really matter. She would gladly allow Deanna to take all her strength; even if it meant her life; to be sure that Deanna survived. Lee was that much in love with the beautiful ship's Counselor from the Enterprise. Deanna slowly opened her eyes and looked around. It was nearly two hours later.

"What happened to me?"

"You began to phase out my friend. Your words began to slur. You looked very pale. You even passed out. Did you hear me call to you in your mind to use my energy?"

"Yes, I heard you. Was I that weak? I feel so tired."

"It's all right. You rest. I'll be right over there," Lee said as she pointed to the chair across the room.

Lee touched Deanna's forehead and opened her hand to let go. But Deanna didn't want to let go. She wanted Lee to stay where she was.

"Deanna, don't put me in an awkward position, please. We both have the same feelings but you're in a committed relationship. Your partner is going to have your child. Please let go," Lee pleaded.

Deanna slowly released Lee's hand. Lee went over and sat down on the chair, stretching her legs out on the footstool. She was exhausted due to helping Troi and fell asleep quickly. Deanna began to wonder what had possessed her to try and seduce her old school friend. She needed to return to her own dimension quickly and never return. Once she was sure that Lee was asleep, Deanna got up and sat down at Lee's desk. Unfortunately; because she had never been a member of the crew of the U.S.S. Merlin; she was unable to access the viewscreen as she could on the Enterprise. She noticed that Lee had a stylus and several PADDs lying on her desk. Some had been written on already. 'She still likes to write', thought Troi. Deanna picked up the stylus and left a note for Lee on the blank PADD.

Dearest Lee:

I apologize for my behavior in your

quarters. I had no right to put you

on the spot like that. Take care of

Laren and keep an eye on her for me.

Take care of yourself. If you need

me, call with your mind & I'll come.

Love Always,

DEANNA

She laid the PADD on Lee's lap, kissed her forehead and then vanished forever.

CHAPTER 6

When Lee May K'Mpel awoke, she found the PADD with the note on her lap. Deanna was gone. Lee May reached out with her telepathic abilities but got no reply. Lee showered and made her way to Sickbay before she had to report to the Bridge for her tour as duty officer. She found the Merlin's Chief Medical Officer in her office. Doctor Schleigh looked up when she heard the knock on her door jamb.

"Good morning Counselor. Didn't you sleep well last night?"

She noticed Lee trying to work out a kink in her back.

"I fell asleep in a chair while I was reading. How's Lieutenant Ro doing this morning?"

"I was just about to check on her. According to the night shift, she was a bit restless; but her vital signs remained stable. I've just been comparing her last physical from six months ago to the readings we took in her quarters and those taken here in Sickbay. I found a minor discrepancy. The readings from here are just a bit off from those I took in her quarters.

"It seems as though her metabolism was slightly adjusted to be able to cope with the pregnancy. I can't explain it. I'm half-tempted to ask Lieutenant Ro; but I'm afraid of the answer I'd get. On top of that, I've had the oddest feeling for the last few hours; almost as though someone's been watching me. Anyway, let's see how she's doing."

The two officers headed for the main examination room where Lieutenant Ro Laren was sleeping. Just as they entered, she began to wake up. It took her a few moments to realize where she was. As her eyes and mind focused on her surroundings, she saw Counselor K'Mpel and Doctor Schleigh approaching. Then, in a sudden rush of realization, Laren tried to sit up. When her head began to spin from the sudden movement, she slowly laid back down.

"Let that be a lesson to you," said Doctor Schleigh.

"Don't try to move too quickly Laren," added Lee.

"You gave everyone quite a scare Lieutenant. How are you feeling now?"

"A little better Doctor; is the baby .............?"

"You're still pregnant Laren. You'll be fine. You're in no danger," said Lee. {{Deanna was here and helped you.}} Lee added telepathically.

Laren seemed to understand. She looked at Doctor Schleigh as if to get agreement from her that she was all right. When Cher nodded her head that what Lee May had said was true, Laren slowly began to sit up once again. As her head cleared even more, Lieutenant Ro Laren wanted to leave the confines of Sickbay and return to her own quarters. After being given a clean bill from Doctor Schleigh, Laren returned to her quarters with Lee as her escort. As they reached her quarters, Laren turned to Lee.

"What really happened? I remember being in pain but nothing else."

"Let's go inside and I'll explain."

Laren keyed her temporary security code and the door whooshed open before them. After they had entered, the women sat on the couch. Lee began to explain what had happened.

"You must have called out; more like screamed; with your mind when you felt the pain. When I 'heard', as well as sensed, your scream; I came running. When I got here, I found Deanna holding your head in her lap. When I told her that I had called our Chief Medical Officer, she disappeared. I felt her presence in Sickbay and the doctor said that your metabolism had been slightly altered so the collapse wouldn't happen again.

"Helping you must have drained her strength. I had her meet me in my quarters so that we could talk. Deanna and I were old school friends. We grew up together through our teens and attended the Academy together. We were talking when she collapsed. She rested there for awhile and then left. I haven't sensed her presence since I woke up. She disappeared while I slept."

Laren listened to the explanation about the events between her collapse and her awakening in Sickbay. There was something that bothered her though. She felt that she had to ask Lee about her relationship with Deanna.

"Lee, you said that you and Deanna were school friends. May I ask you a question without sounding jealous?"

"I think I already know what your question will be. The answer is 'no'. Deanna hadn't admitted her sexuality as a lesbian back then. I always was a lesbian. I've known since I was a teenager. Although I was; and still am; attracted to Deanna, I was unable to do anything about it. Don't panic! I do not interfere with other relationships. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some appointments to deal with. If you like, I'll meet you in the lounge for dinner. You look like you could use some more sleep."

With that, Counselor Lee May K'Mpel left the young lieutenant to her own thoughts. The next five weeks went quickly. Laren and Lee talked often about many things. Laren confided her fears about the pregnancy to Lee. Lee shared memories she had of Deanna from their youth. When then arrived at DS9, Lee accompanied Lieutenant Ro to the transporter room. Laren promised to keep Lee informed of her progress with the pregnancy. Laren stepped onto the platform and nodded her head that she was ready.

"Good luck Lieutenant. Take care of yourself."

"Thank you for everything Counselor. Goodbye."

The transporter chief energized the chamber and Lieutenant Ro Laren disappeared in a shimmer of light. Her next stop was DS9; and hopefully, a new life.

CHAPTER 7

The transporter officer had let DS9 know that Lieutenant Ro Laren was on her way. The coordinates would allow Ro Laren to appear on the pad just off the Promenade. Waiting for her were Odo, the Chief of Security; and Major Kira Nerys, the First Officer. The shimmer of light consolidated into a young Bajoran woman in a Starfleet uniform.

"Lieutenant j.g. Ro Laren reporting for duty sir," she said once she was solid.

"Welcome to DS9 Lieutenant. This is Security Chief Odo. I'm Major Kira Nerys, the First Officer," said Kira.

"Thank you Major. Permission to come aboard?"

"Permission granted Lieutenant."

"How do you do Chief?" Laren asked as she stepped off the pad.

"Just Odo," he replied.

The three officers made their way through the Promenade. Odo turned into his office as Kira and Laren continued on toward Quark's bar/casino/restaurant. Kira had gotten Commander Sisko's permission to have dinner with Laren before she was to meet with him. When Quark saw the two women enter, he jumped on the chance to find out more about the new arrival. Kira saw him coming.

"Oh boy! Here comes trouble."

Quark had reached the women. Kira knew that she would have to introduce Laren to him or he'd never leave them alone.

"Major, aren't you going to introduce me to your friend. My name is Quark. I own this establishment. What can I get for you ladies?"

"Quark, this is Lieutenant Ro Laren. She just transferred to DS9. Fair warning, she's an old friend so I don't even want to smell you trying to con her. Is that clear Quark?"

"Major, I'm shocked at your accusations. I would never even consider such a thing. Now what would you like? ---- on the house, of course."

Quark seemed unphased by her remark. Kira had made her point though. She knew that Quark would bend over backwards to be sure that Laren was happy. He showed them to a table and brought them each a drink. When he had finally left them alone, the women began to talk. They were seated at a small table in a secluded corner. Considering what they might end up discussing, it was the best place to be.

"It's been a long time since we've seen each other. How have you been Laren? You left without even saying goodbye."

"I know and I'm sorry. I felt that if I saw you one more time, I would never leave. But to answer your question; it's been hard. But when I was on the Enterprise, I felt like I had found a place where I could start over. I felt like I'd found a family again. How about you? You've done well I see. A major in the Bajoran military and First Officer on Deep Space 9. How do you like it here?"

"It's different. I can honestly say that it isn't boring around here. I think you'll find it a change of pace. What made you decide to return to Bajor? Even out here we know the reputation of the Enterprise; only the best officers serve on her. What made you leave?"

Laren knew that sooner or later someone would ask her that question. Just then, Doctor Julian Bashir came in. After looking around, he spotted the women and headed for them. Kira noticed him and prayed that he was not looking for them. But when she saw him make a beeline for them, she excused herself.

"Doctor, did you need something?" she asked as she intercepted him.

"I need to see the new officer. I have a question about her medical records."

"Can it wait Julian? We're old friends and have to catch up on lost time. I promise I'll point her in your direction later. OK?!"

"All right. I can wait a few hours. Let her know I need to see her later."

Doctor Bashir headed back toward the door. Kira breathed a sigh of relief. She liked Julian but sometimes he wouldn't know when to leave. Besides, the discussion they were having was taking a turn toward what Kira would still prefer to keep private. She returned to Laren and apologized for her departure.

"What was that all about?" Laren asked as Kira sat down.

"Doctor Bashir wants you to see him later, that's all. I promised to steer you in the right direction. Now, where were we? Oh yes, your reason for coming home."

The waiter had arrived with their dinner; as well as two more drinks. Kira had to suppress a laugh. Quark certainly was outdoing himself to make sure that Kira and her friend were well taken care of. In fact, the waiter was Rom (Quark's brother). Laren noticed Kira's expression and gave her a questioning look. Kira merely shook her head and smiled. Laren waited until he was gone. She took a deep breath and began her explanation.

"It's good to see you again Kira. I've missed you. One of the reasons I requested this posting was because of you. The other is because I had to return home. You see, I'm pregnant."

Kira's mouth dropped when she heard that. Then she noticed Laren's hands. She was wearing a wedding band. Why hadn't she noticed that before? Laren noticed Kira's reaction and reached out for Kira's hand.

"Kira, are you all right? I didn't mean to blurt it out like that. Doctor Bashir obviously had my medical records from the Enterprise and the Merlin. He wants to be sure they're correct, I suppose."

"Laren, did I hear you correctly? You're pregnant?! May I ask who the father is?"

She hoped that what she had just asked wouldn't sound judgmental.

"There is no father in that sense. My lover and I felt that the time was right for us to conceive a child. She's unable to bear children for medical reasons, so the embryo was implanted in me. I love her very much. We used DNA from both of us, so that the child will have some of her features as well as some of mine.

"You're probably wondering when my partner will be joining me. The truth is that she can't. I haven't been deserted by her. Please don't think that. We married even though we knew we would be separated. We love each other that much. This child will be the culmination of that love."

Laren could sense that Kira was remembering how they had met and become lovers. It seemed like a lifetime ago. In a way, it had been. So many things had changed since the day Laren had left. Laren continued so Kira would understand. She reached over and took Kira's hand and stroked her former lover's cheek.

"But know that I will always care for you Kira. When we were together, I felt like it would last forever. Did you ever realize that you had been my first lover?"

"No, I didn't know. Is that why you left? Did it frighten you?"

"In a way, it did. Also, you were older than I was. Not by much, that's true; but you were more experienced than I was. You were a respected member of the ShaaKar. I didn't want anything to jeopardize that. Our affair could have been used against you if anyone found out. I didn't want to risk hurting you, so I left. That's when I joined Starfleet. I had risen to Lieutenant Commander when one mistake cost me everything: 9 lives were lost; my rank; my self-esteem. Everything gone.

"Then some Rear Admiral conned me into thinking that I could help my people by dealing with the Cardassians. If it hadn't been for Captain Picard, I'd probably be back in the brig; or dead. Treason is still the only death sentence on the books, you know. I'm telling you all this because your Commander Sisko will see my record. It just reflects the events; not the whys. I want you to understand the reasons behind the events."

CHAPTER 8

Kira sat there in stunned silence. Commander Sisko would blow a gasket if he thought he'd been lied to. She remembered Odo's reaction when he found out that she had lied to him when the Cardassians still ran the station. He felt that his trust in her had been betrayed. They were just beginning to rebuild that trust once again. And Kira still regretted having had to lie to him; especially when he had saved her life in the process. How would Sisko react? Obviously, Laren still trusted Kira enough to tell her what had happened. She didn't expect Kira to intervene in her behalf; just to be there as a support when the fur flew. Laren touched Kira's cheek again and felt that it was wet. Kira had been crying.

"Don't cry Kira. I didn't mean to hurt you by returning to Bajor, but I didn't have anywhere else to go. Are you sorry I came back?"

"No, I'm not sorry. I'm glad you felt that you could come home to me."

Kira leaned across the table and gave Laren a gentle kiss. The women finished their meal and headed for Ops. Ro Laren still had to report to the base commander. As the turbolift arrived at Ops, Jadzia Dax and Chief O'Brien looked up. They had heard that Major Kira was eating with Lieutenant Ro. Kira led Ro Laren toward Commander Sisko's office. Laren stopped momentarily to say hello to Chief O'Brien. Kira had reached Sisko's door. She turned to be sure that Laren was behind her when she hit the door chime.

"Come in," he said.

"Commander Sisko, this is Lieutenant j.g. Ro Laren. Lieutenant Ro, this is Commander Benjamin Sisko; station commander," Kira said as she introduced the officers to each other.

Kira was about to leave when Sisko stopped her.

"Stay a moment Major. This won't take long," he ordered.

Kira turned and stood next to Ro Laren. She knew from Sisko's expression that he was not exactly thrilled about Laren's Starfleet record. She could just glimpse it out of the corner of her eye on Sisko's viewscreen.

"I've read your record Lieutenant," he began. "I thought I had recognized your name. You'll have to earn my trust, just as you had to earn Captain Picard's. I realize that since your court-martial and reprieve, you've shown yourself a capable officer. But be sure that if I see the slightest indication that you are slipping into your former characteristics; I'll fall so hard on you that you'll think you're a first year cadet again. Is that clear Lieutenant?"

"Perfectly clear Commander. I expect nothing less. I promise I won't do anything to jeopardize that trust."

Commander Sisko merely nodded in response. Lieutenant Ro and Major Kira turned and headed for the door. Just as the door opened, Sisko spoke again. They turned around.

"By the way Lieutenant; welcome to DS9."

"Thank you Commander."

They turned back and left the office. Kira let out a sigh of relief. Laren began to breathe again too. They headed back toward the turbolift. Laren had to see Doctor Bashir for a physical. It was the other requirement upon arriving at the station. It would be an interesting meeting. Doctor Bashir tended to get puppy eyes over every woman he would meet. He would still try to make a pass at Jadzia every now and then. Kira went with Laren to Sickbay. She wanted to be sure that Laren was healthy and would be able to carry the fetus safely. When they arrived, they found Julian in his office. Kira made the introductions.

"Lieutenant Ro Laren, I'd like you to meet Doctor Julian Bashir. He's our Chief Medical Officer here on DS9."

"Hello Lieutenant. I need to give you a physical as a precaution. I also want to confirm the medical report from the CMO of the U.S.S. Merlin; the ship that brought you here."

"Of course Doctor. I understand."

Kira stayed behind in Julian's office while he and Laren made their way to the examination area. Julian took out a tricorder and began to move it over Lieutenant Ro. As the results began to appear, the woman could read Julian's reactions to what he saw in his face. When he saw the verification that Ro Laren was indeed pregnant, he wondered about the unusual readings. Doctor Schleigh's report had said that Laren's metabolism had been slightly altered. He knew what the normal readings were for Bajorans.

He had also dealt with several pregnancies of Bajoran women on the station. But the readings for Laren were off. Then he noticed the DNA pattern. The pattern indicated not only Bajoran DNA; but also DNA from a Betazoid with human DNA factors as well. He knew he would have to question Laren about the unusual genetics. He noticed a wedding ring as she had gotten up on the examination table.

"Lieutenant, I need to ask you about your pregnancy. My readings indicate that the fetus is about 9-10 weeks along. They also indicate that the DNA has human and Betazoid factors; along with your own Bajoran physiology. Was the father Betazoid?"

"Yes Doctor. Is everything all right otherwise?" Laren asked.

"Yes it is. You're healthy as the proverbial horse. If you do have any problems though, come see me. You should come full term in about 7 months. A Bajoran fetus gestates in approximately 72 months. However, the human and Betazoid gestation period is between 9 and 92 months. You should give birth after approximately 8 to 82 months. I'll set up a schedule of examinations during your pregnancy. That should about do it. Major Kira can escort you to your quarters now. Glad to have met you Lieutenant."

"Thank you Doctor."

Kira had been waiting for Laren in Doctor Bashir's office. Laren found her pacing the room like a caged animal. Laren smiled to herself when she remembered how often Kira would do the same thing when they were together.

"You're going to wear a hole in the deck."

Kira jumped at the voice behind her. She seemed to be deep in thought about something. Laren wondered what Kira was thinking about. She turned to see Laren leaning on the door jamb with her arms folded across her chest.

"What were you thinking about?" asked Laren as she came in.

"Us," Kira whispered.

The women headed for the door. Laren slipped her bag back onto her shoulder as they headed for the turbolift and the habitat ring. When they reached Laren's new quarters, the women sat down and continued their talk from the restaurant. Laren noticed that the crates with the rest of her belongings were stacked in a corner of the main room.

"I have something to show you Kira," said Laren.

"What is it?" asked Kira.

Laren had kept the computer chips in the phaser pouch incorporated into her uniform. As she put the first chip into the viewer, she explained what was on them.

"I found these two chips after my lover and I had been together for the last time. You may recognize her. Sometimes I wonder how I managed to find and keep her. She's a very beautiful woman."

Laren hit the button and the image of Deanna Troi appeared on the screen. 'Laren was right', thought Kira. She certainly was a beautiful woman. As Kira listened to the messages, she would occasionally catch a glimpse of a sad expression on Laren's face. She also noticed that Laren was moving closer to her. Kira reached out and took Laren's hand. She felt Laren's arms around her waist and shoulders.

"You miss her very much, don't you Laren?" Kira asked.

"Yes I do."

Kira could feel something beginning to stir within her. Since Laren had left, Kira had had no other lovers. Her work and the ShaaKar had kept her from getting seriously involved with another woman. She'd had only 2 or 3 other lovers before Laren; but none had lasted very long. They were usually killed in Cardassian raids. Being in the ShaaKar was dangerous. She and Laren had been lovers for several years. When they had begun their affair, Laren had been 18 and Kira had been 21. They had both been very young.

CHAPTER 9

The Cardassians had been laying waste to Bajor for 50 years. The freedom fighters had begun to organize into a serious threat to the Cardassians. The Bajoran people had finally begun to rally against the oppression. One group in particular grew in number and strength. Its name was the ShaaKar. One of its more prominent members was a young woman named Kira Nerys. She had organized and led many successful raids against the Cardassians. She was just past 20. She had been with them since she was 12.

One day, one of the recon teams returned with a young woman of about 17 years of age. Her name was Ro Laren. They had found her in the ruins of one of the temples. She was dressed in rags, but she also wore one piece of jewelry; besides the traditional earring. It was a coat-of-arms or family crest of some type. The team had questioned her about it.

She stood before Kira Nerys as the man in charge of the team spoke to her quietly and handed her the medallion they had confiscated. Two men held Laren by her arms. She was quite a fighter. One of the men had a black eye; the other had been scratched along the face.

"Let me go. That's mine. Give it back," shouted Laren as she struggled against the strong hands that held her.

The older ShaaKar members recognized it. It had belonged to a once powerful and influential clan on Bajor. They had defied the Cardassians and it was thought that all had been killed. Now it seemed that one had survived. Kira went up to the frightened young woman. She motioned for the men to release Laren.

"My name is Kira Nerys. Do you know who we are?"

"Yes. You're members of the ShaaKar. I recognize the colors. But why am I here? I didn't do anything wrong."

"No one said that you did. We brought you here to protect you. Do you understand what this medallion that you have means and who it belongs to?" Nerys asked as she showed Laren the piece.

"Yes. I explained that to these men. But I don't think they believe me."

"They believe you Ro Laren. Some of these men and women were friends of the family you represent. Apparently, you are the sole surviving member of the Ro clan. Stay with us. We'll teach you to fight. I grew up here. They found me when I was 12. They became my family. You can stay as long as you like. No one will hold you here. Come on, let's find you a place to bed down."

Nerys put a protective arm around Laren. The two women moved away from the "command center" of the building they occupied. Kira knew there was room next to her. Laren was frightened. She needed a friend. Kira found some clean clothes for Laren. She also warned Laren to hide her medallion. It was still dangerous to admit who she was. She handed the medallion back to the young woman.

They went to see the doctor they had because Laren's face and arms showed bruising from the beatings. She held her arm across her midriff as though her ribs were injured. The exam confirmed that Laren had cracked two ribs: along with previously incurred injuries; like self-set broken bones; as well as cuts, abrasions, and evidence of several minor concussions.

There was also evidence that she had been raped several weeks before. However, she was thankfully not pregnant. The Cardassians left no Bajoran female untouched. Kira knew it well. She was just getting her head together about what they had done to her. Laren would need someone who knew how it felt to be a victim of rape. As they went back to their beds, Laren began to unwind in the presence of the "older" woman. Even though Kira was only about 3 years older than Laren, her experience made her seem so much older and wiser.

"Kira, you said that you've been here since you were 12. How did it happen?"

"The Cardies had destroyed my hometown. My parents had hidden me in a closet while they tried to fight off the intruders. I watched them die. The Cardassian who killed them found me hiding. He beat me up ........... and raped me."

"Nerys, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. I didn't realize."

Laren reached out and touched the older woman's arm. Kira put her hand on the younger woman's hand.

"It's all right. I've had a long time to deal with it. Right now, we both need some sleep. Good night Laren."

"Good night Kira. Thank you."

Kira lay on her bunk with her hands behind her head. A tear rolled down her cheek as she remembered the conversation she'd just had with Ro Laren. Within a month, Laren was being assigned to recon teams. Eventually; she was assigned permanently to Kira's team. As time went on, Laren became as valued a member of the ShaaKar as Kira was.

One evening, as Kira returned to the sleep area, she thought she heard crying. As she came closer, she realized that it was Laren crying. As Kira moved closer, the crying stopped. Kira knelt down next to Laren's bunk. She put her hand on Laren's head. Laren was covered to the waist with a blanket. The nights were turning cooler.

"Laren, I know you're awake. What's wrong? Can we talk about it?"

Laren rolled over and looked Kira in the eyes. She could see that the younger woman had been crying. Her cheeks were still wet from the tears she had just shed. They had been sleeping in bunks that were side by side for nearly a year. Kira was 21 by this time. Laren had just turned 18. Laren noticed that on occasion, even though she wasn't on duty; Kira would sleep elsewhere. She assumed that Kira had a lover.

"There's something I never mentioned about myself. It may affect our friendship. The Cardassians caught me once. I was with my lover. They dragged us away. They made me watch as they raped her; and then they made her watch as I was raped. Then I was taken to one camp and she was taken to another. I never saw her again. I think she may be dead. We hadn't been together for very long. We just sort of found each other. The reason I'm telling you all this is because I'm finding myself attracted to you; and I don't know how you'll take it. I think I've fallen in love with you Kira Nerys."

"Laren, I don't know what to say."

Kira began to blush. Laren had said what Kira had been thinking. Laren suddenly felt stupid for having said anything to Kira about how she felt about her. Kira reached out to touch Laren's hair. She began to stroke Laren's cheek and neck. Kira knew that Laren slept in as little as was possible and still be able to fight effectively. Laren's bedwear usually consisted of tee shirts and her underpants. This way all she had to do; if needed; was to pull on a pair of pants and boots and go. Laren began to react to Kira's caresses. Laren reached out and began to touch Kira in the same way. Kira could feel the throbbing begin deep inside. Before things went too far, Kira spoke up. She began to stand as well.

"Laren, come with me. I know a place where we can have some privacy."

Laren rose and slipped on her pants. Kira held out her hand. Laren took it as she slipped into her shoes and Kira led the way to a secluded area of the building. When they arrived, Kira keyed in a security code. The door slid quietly open, revealing a cozy little room. Apparently, it had once been someone's office. Now, where the desk had been, there was a real bed. How had Kira managed it? As if reading her thoughts, Kira explained.

"This is my private sanctuary. I would bring these things, one by one, here at night. In fact, this was my bed. I managed to get it here over the course of several trips. Some of the other senior officers have special places like this. It's difficult to have a love affair in the barracks bunk area. Everyone would know who your lover was. There are several of us; men and women; who are gay. Each of us has a separate room. This way, we can be with our lovers away from prying eyes."

Laren had been looking at the various things in the room. Kira came up behind Laren and put her arms around her waist. Laren could feel Kira's warm lips on her bare shoulders. Holding Kira's arms with her own, Laren reached back to Kira's head and held it where it was. This let Kira know that she had found an extra sensitive spot. Her eyes closed and Kira could feel Laren take a deep breath. Kira began to move slowly around so that she and Laren would be face-to-face. As she did, she continued to kiss and nibble Laren's sensitive skin.

Once Kira was before Laren, their lips met in a tentative yet passionate kiss. As their lips parted, Laren began to make her way down Kira's neck and began to move around Kira. Laren began to tickle behind Kira's ear with her tongue. Kira's reaction told Laren that she had found a sensitive spot as well. As she continued to tickle the spot, she also began to tickle and stroke Kira's nipples to erection. Laren was kissing the back of Kira's neck as she was reaching around. Kira reached back and found the top of Laren's pants. When Laren realized where Kira was going, she began to move a hand down Kira's torso to her belly.

Kira turned her neck so that Laren's lips met hers. Kira could feel her own body reacting to Laren's hands and kisses. She could feel her body throb deep in her core. She turned once again and her hand began to probe the back of Laren's pants. The women continued to stroke and kiss each other. Kira slowly began to work her hands under Laren's shirt. She could see Laren's hard nipples through the thin olive drab shirt. She didn't want either of them to be in a hurry. When she felt Laren's back muscles contract, she held still. She wanted Laren to get used to her touch.

"Are you all right Laren? I didn't mean to make you jump," Kira whispered.

"It's OK. Your hands were a bit chilly that's all. Don't stop."

"Are you sure?"

Laren answered Kira by kissing her deeply. At the same time, her hands made their way around Kira's buttocks. Laren pulled her closer. Her leg found its way between Kira's. Kira continued her exploration of Laren's body under the shirt. Laren began to reach under Kira's shirt as well. At some point, both women's' hands found their way to each other's breasts. They continued to tickle each other's nipples while one hand began to undo the other's pants. Kira continued to move her hand down Laren's body, removing her pants in the process.

Laren had slipped her hands down the back of Kira's loosened pants from inside and found the edge of Kira's underwear. Kira began to smile through the kisses. She slid off her pants as well. The women sat down on the edge of the bed. They slowed their exploration of each other long enough to speak. Kira wanted to be sure Laren was ready for what was to come.

"Laren, I care for you as much as you do for me. I just want to be absolutely sure that you want to be this deeply involved. I don't want to rush you or do anything you don't want me to do."

"I love you Kira Nerys. I want to be with you in your bed. I want you to make love to me just as much as I want to make love to you."

The women laid down on the bed and continued their foreplay. Kira began to slip Laren's shirt up her midriff. As she did, Kira would gently kiss the exposed skin. She slowly made her way up toward Laren's breasts. She blew warm air across each nipple before touching it with her lips or tongue. She momentarily looked up to see Laren's eyes partly closed; as if she were watching from below the lids. Kira finished slipping Laren's shirt over her head. Laren's nipples stood hard and erect. Kira's fingertips made their way along Laren's body. The touch was so light that Laren wondered if Kira was still there at all. She could feel Kira's weight next to her and her breath at various points of her sensitive body.

Laren reached out to touch Kira. She wanted this woman who was so much more experienced than she to feel the same love that she felt. Kira reacted to the touch by shifting so that Laren could reach her without straining. By shifting, Kira put some of her weight on Laren's body. Her knee found its way to Laren's crotch. She felt the wet material of Laren's panties and subtly began to move toward Laren's breasts. She gently began to lick around the underside of the one closest to her. Her fingers lightly felt their way along the other. Laren shifted her leg so that Kira's lower back was in range of her hands. She could feel the dampness grow between Kira's legs as well.

Laren began to move one hand over Kira's bare breasts; her top had long since been removed by Laren; while the other slid down her side and into her panties. When she felt Laren's hand against her buttocks from inside the panties, she wrapped her tongue around Laren's nipple and began to suckle at it. In reaction to this, Laren inhaled in surprise. Kira felt the nipple harden even more. She gently moved it back and forth between her teeth. A moan of pleasure escaped Laren's lips. It was so deep that even she was surprised. She didn't realize that such pleasure was possible. Laren was relieved of her panties as well. As Kira released the nipple she'd been nibbling on to begin the process all over again, she found herself being rolled onto her back as Laren slid down to take Kira's nipples into her mouth.

She also felt Laren's hands strip her of her panties. Kira began to realize that Laren was planning something. Before Kira could ask the question, the answer was already stroking the inside of her thighs. As hard as she tried, she could not stop the process now. Her body had taken over. Laren had, by sheer accident, found the trigger point for Kira's most sensitive erogenous zone. Kira didn't want to climax before Laren was able to. Kira began to roll Laren back over. Just as Laren rolled onto her back once again, Kira felt the penetration of Laren's fingers. Her back arched in surprise and then the realization of what had just happened kicked in. Laren must have seen how close Kira was to orgasm. Kira felt the fingers tickling the inside of her cunt. She felt the in and out pumping of the digits as if they had a mind of their own.

Kira was wondering how close to climax Laren was. She knew only one way to find out. Kira lifted herself off Laren's fingers and turned around. With her cunt still within range of Laren's fingers, Kira began to penetrate Laren with her fingers. When she felt Laren's muscles contract, she held very still until Laren was used to her touch. When she felt Laren relax, she eased her fingers further into Laren's honey-laden opening. Kira felt Laren's cunt open further to admit her fingers. She felt Laren continue to explore her own cunt as her fingers made their way deeper into Laren. Laren was the first to reach climax. As she exploded with spasms, her fingers; which were still deep inside Kira; were plunged even deeper. This brought Kira over the edge. The spasms continued for several minutes.

When they finally began to subside, Kira moved so that she was lying on her side next to Laren; wrapped in the young woman's arms. Laren brought Kira's lips to her own. The women continued to kiss and stroke each other until they felt their bodies relax enough for them to drift off to sleep in each other's' arms. The women would spend many more nights together like this.

They would be lovers for over four years before things began to change within the ShaaKar and within the Bajor government. Action was giving way to politics. The freedom fighters were becoming obsolete. It was also during this time that rumors had begun to spread about Kira and Laren's relationship. Laren felt that if she left the ShaaKar; and left Bajor; there may be an end to the rumors she was beginning to overhear. And she loved Kira too much to cause any problems for her.

She'd also heard that Kai Opaka was considering Kira as a liaison officer between the religious community and the military. Laren didn't want to jeopardize Kira's chances of getting the position by having innuendoes floating around about them. Kira's rank within the ShaaKar had given her an advantage so that both the religious community and the military trusted her. So while Kira was in a meeting with Kai Opaka and the leaders of the resistance; along with the military leaders; Laren packed her few belongings and headed for the spaceport.

She stopped in their sanctuary and took one of the little ceramic pieces as a reminder of their love for each other. Laren put it in her bag. It was a little ceramic doll. She also had the medallion that was her only link to her family name. Laren didn't know that Kira had just been given the rank of Captain in the Bajoran military. In her hand, Laren carried an approval for her application to Starfleet Academy. She had submitted her application without Kira's knowledge. When she began to hear the rumors, she'd sent it. Now she could start a new life; but she would never forget Nerys. She would love Kira Nerys forever. Little did she know that when she left Bajor that day; that she would be returning. And that she would also be returning to the first woman she had ever loved.

CHAPTER 10

"Kira! KIRA!" said Laren.

"I'm sorry Laren. What did you say?"

"You looked so far away. What were you thinking about?"

"I was thinking about our time together. It seems like a lifetime ago. I still care for you Laren. I'm glad you found someone who loves you so much that; even though she can't be with you; she married you and provided DNA to create the life you now carry. I hope that I'll one day find someone like that. I'm a little envious I suppose."

Laren was still holding Kira as she spoke. She slowly moved around to see the face of her former lover. Laren had felt the same sensation that Kira had felt when they held each other. Laren wondered why she had wrapped her arms around Kira. But Kira hadn't seemed to object. In fact, Kira had pulled her closer; or was she imagining it? She wasn't sure if she should ask Kira about it. She didn't want to embarrass Kira; or destroy what they had once shared. But she felt she had to ask anyway.

"Kira, did you feel the same thing I did when we listened to Deanna's messages? It stirred in me some long ago feelings. I think you'd better leave now before we do something we'll both regret. We both need to get some sleep. Good night Kira."

"All right Laren. By the way, you're right. I did feel those things too. I think we both feel this way. We'll have to learn to live with it. Good night."

Kira left Laren's quarters. Both women had felt the old stirrings of the love they had once shared. Both knew that it would be hard for them to live and work in the same place. Laren began to think that it was a bad idea for her to return to Bajor and DS9. Had she done the right thing? She wished she had someone to speak with who would understand.

"Laren."

Laren turned when she heard a voice behind her. She could see a ghostly figure in the corner or her room.

"Deanna!?"

"Don't be afraid to love again. Kira was special to you, wasn't she? The first lover always holds a special place in the heart. I once told you how Will and I met. He was my first lover; my Imzadi. When we served together, we both had other relationships. We remained very dear friends and I will always hold a special place for him in my heart."

"Thank you Deanna. I'll try to remember. Goodbye my darling."

"Goodbye my love. Be well."

Deanna disappeared into the shadows of the netherworld where she now dwelt. Laren slept peacefully that night. She put into perspective her life now. She was pregnant with a child that she and Deanna had wanted. She returned to the safety of her first lover's arms. And it sounded like Deanna understood her reasons for returning. Laren thought back to the first message that Deanna had recorded. She knew that it would be hard for Laren to stay with Deanna emotionally. It was impossible physically. Thinking some more, Laren slipped the first chip into the viewer. She listened to her lover say that if she found a new love one day; then it would be all right for Laren to pursue that love. A tear fell from Laren's eye as she removed the computer chip.

"Deanna, did you know about Kira all along?" asked Laren into the empty air around her.

Time moved slowly for both women. Laren found herself settling into the routine of DS9. Kira found herself getting used to being with Laren once again. Doctor Bashir had let Commander Sisko know about Laren's pregnancy. As time went on, Laren's condition started to become obvious. She and Kira would spend off-duty time together. Sometimes with Jadzia in the makeshift gym; but many times they were alone. They seemed to be rediscovering each other again. The months came and went. As the time neared for Laren to deliver her baby, Kira felt herself coming to realize that; just as when they were young; she had fallen in love with Laren all over again. How would Kira tell her how she felt? Or should she say anything at all? She decided to speak with Laren that night.

"Laren, may I come in?"

Kira had pressed the door chime to Laren's quarters. The door whooshed open before her. Laren was in her 8th month. In other words, she was due to deliver any day. Even though Kira had seen Laren grow day by day; to see her this large made her nervous.

"What's wrong Kira? Are you worried about me?" asked Laren.

Kira entered and kissed Laren on the cheek as she passed the younger woman. Laren followed Kira into the sitting room area of her quarters.

"Laren, I need to speak with you about something. I'm not sure if this is the right time to tell you this or not; but it's been something that's been on my mind for some time."

"Kira, you're starting to scare me. What's this all about?"

"Laren, I've fallen in love with you again; just as I did when we were young."

"I know you have Kira. I've known for weeks. The reason I know is because I feel the same way."

Kira was stunned by Laren's announcement. But, then again, she had just told Laren the same thing. How would they proceed now? Laren still wore the wedding band that Deanna Troi had given her. Laren had told Kira that Deanna had only appeared twice since she'd been on DS9. On both occasions, she had told Laren that it would be all right to fall in love with someone else.

"Laren, I think the time has come for me to say goodbye to you for the last time."

Deanna had appeared to Laren while she was in her 5th month. Both women knew that it was time for Laren to move on. Deanna would always keep an eye on Laren, and appear when needed; but she could see that Laren was beginning to fall in love with Kira Nerys again. She knew that Kira had been Laren's first lover. They were well-matched.

"You can't! What will I do without you?" Laren protested.

"Kira is a fine woman Laren. I know about your past together. You will have a good life together. She still cares for you, but the ring you wear holds her back from telling you how she truly feels."

Laren stood before her life partner in stunned silence. Deanna was telling her it was all right to move on to a new love. They both knew it would happen one day. It had become inevitable once Deanna had become the leader of the Betazed Women of Power. Laren's hand moved down toward the bulge when the child she was carrying was growing larger. Laren wondered about how to deal with a new lover with a child due in a couple of months.

"Deanna, are you sure about this?"

"It's time Laren. I'll always love you my darling. When the need arises, I'll be there. Just as Kira was your first lover; remember that you taught me that it was all right to have a woman as a lover. You'll be a fine mother. And Kira will love you both. I must go now my darling. Take care of yourself and our daughter. Farewell my beloved. Be well."

"Goodbye Deanna. Thank you for everything. I'll always hold your love in my soul. You made me believe in love again. Is there a name you prefer for the child when she's born?"

"Name her Kestra. That was my sister's name. She's gone but I don't think Mother would mind. Goodbye Laren. I love you too."

"That's a beautiful name. Kestra it will be. I promise. Be well my love."

Deanna vanished into the shadows but "kissed" Laren goodbye one last time. Laren felt the fetus stir within her; as if Deanna had touched her mind as well. When she could no longer sense Deanna presence, Laren began to cry.

CHAPTER 11

"Laren, where have you been?" asked Kira.

Laren had a far-away look in her eyes. Kira didn't know what she was thinking, but the look was a little bit sad. Kira reached out and held Laren's hand. She was a little worried about Laren. The baby was due any day now. Perhaps that was what was bothering her. Kira steered Laren toward the sofa and they sat down.

"What's wrong Laren? I'm sorry if what I said upset you. I never was the best diplomat in the world, you know that. But I guess I never fell out of love with you. I never had another lover after you left. I know you and Deanna must have had something very special. I don't want to replace that. And I know the past is gone. But maybe the three of us can build a new future. Can we try Laren?"

Laren had begun to cry. She had been thinking just what Kira had been saying. Laren leaned over and kissed Kira deeply. She took one of Kira's hands and placed it on her belly. Laren had felt the fetus kicking and wanted Kira to feel it too. When Kira felt a tiny hand touch hers, she smiled. It seemed that the tiny life was reaching out to sense whether Kira would be a good friend to this new life about to be born.

"What is it Kira?" Laren asked.

"I could feel a little hand trying to reach out to me. I could almost 'hear' the baby call out my name. How is that possible?"

"Remember, the DNA had Betazoid elements. I'm already able to sense her thoughts. It's bizarre sometimes. By the way, she did call your name."

Kira took Laren in her arms and held her tight. As they held each other, Laren began to feel the contractions of labor beginning. Kira also felt Laren's contractions begin.

"Laren, shall I take you to Doctor Bashir?"

"I think you'd better. It will probably be awhile before the baby comes; but there's no way of know how long, or how soon, it will be."

Kira nodded and helped Laren to her feet. Suddenly, Laren squeezed Kira's hand so hard that she cringed. Laren's face showed the pain she was in.

"Transporter, this is Major Kira. Two to beam directly to Sickbay. Doctor Bashir, meet Laren and I there."

The two young women shimmered out of existence and appeared in Sickbay. Julian Bashir was waiting for them when they appeared. He helped Kira get Laren onto the biobed. A nurse appeared and helped prepare Laren to deliver her baby. The speed with which the labor was advancing surprised everyone. Doctor Bashir assumed it was because of the complex genetics involved. Laren didn't let go of Kira's hand the whole time.

Fortunately, the U.S.S. Merlin had just arrived with a delivery of supplies. Doctor Bashir asked them to beam over a birthing chair. When Doctor Schleigh asked why; Bashir explained quickly. The scream she heard told her that Laren was in trouble. Doctor Schleigh arrived with the chair. Introductions were quick and on a first name basis.

"Cher Schleigh."

"Julian Bashir."

"Kira, you're going to have to move out of the way. Doctor Schleigh, I'm glad you're here. I may need some help. The labor is happening much faster than expected."

Kira had managed to get within reach of the young woman who was about to give birth to her first child. Laren reached out and took the hand of the older woman who had once been her lover. It seemed as though they would be again. Laren was having trouble with the birth.

"Laren, can you hear me?" asked Bashir.

"What's wrong Doctor?" she asked through the pain.

"I'm going to have to give your baby a little help. I have to reach in and make sure the little lady comes out head first. She wants to come out running. Perhaps an indication of your life from now on."

He hoped to make light a what could be a serious situation. Doctor Schleigh knew what Julian was telling Laren. She hoped that the young woman wouldn't panic as he turned the baby. A breach birth could be dangerous for both mother and child. Bashir would have to make sure that the umbilical cord was safely out of the way.

"This may be painful as I try to turn the baby. Hold on."

As Doctor Bashir reached in to turn the child so the birth could take place normally, Laren was holding on to Kira's hand. Finally, after all the pain, Doctor Bashir presented Laren with a beautiful baby girl. Kira reached over to touch the tiny hand that she had felt try to reach out for her just hours before. Tiny fingers held her tight.

"Hello princess. Welcome to DS9."

"I think we should let them get some sleep. Thank you for your help Doctor Schleigh," said Julian as he shook hands with Cher.

"You're welcome Doctor Bashir. I was glad to help. I don't know about you; but I'm starving. Any recommendations on where to eat?" Cher replied.

The two doctors headed for the Promenade. Kira just shook her head. Julian would never change.

"I'd better be going too. You've had a rough day. I'll be back later. What's our new arrival's name?"

"Kestra. It was the name of Deanna's sister. She said it would be all right."

"It's a beautiful name. It sounds like the name for a beautiful bird. You get some rest."

Kira kissed Laren and Kestra good night. A nurse came in and took Kestra and put her in a nursery crib. It had been a long day for both women. Kira was glad that Laren had come home. Kira made her way to her quarters in the habitat ring. As she opened the door, she thought she smelled honeysuckle. Laren had told her that Deanna always smelled like honeysuckle. Was it possible?!

"Deanna Troi."

"Yes Kira Nerys. We've never met but it seemed it was time we did. You love Laren just as much as I do. I know that she just had our child. I didn't want Laren to sense my presence, that's why I waited until now. Her range in telepathy is limited except in extreme conditions. I can control whether she knows if I'm near. I wanted to meet you before I left. I don't know how much Laren may have told you. I suppose you might say that this is my way of approving of you. I also wanted to give you something to give to Laren."

Kira stood there stunned. Before her stood Lieutenant Commander Deanna Troi; former ship's Counselor of the U.S.S. Enterprise; and she was giving her blessing for whatever was to happen. Deanna was telling her that; if Kira and Laren wanted to renew their relationship; it was all right. As she watched, she saw Deanna remove the ring she wore and lay it on the table next to Kira. Kira recognized the ring as the mate to the one that Laren wore.

"What can I say?"

"Give this to Laren. She'll know where it came from. She'll understand. Tell her that I will always watch over you all. Take care of her. I know you'll be good to her."

"Deanna, if you don't mind me calling you by your first name, I don't know how you want me to explain it to Laren. I do love her very much. I'm glad to have met you. I'll give Laren your message. Thank you for being there. Your daughter is beautiful; just like her mothers. Would you mind if I kiss you goodbye?"

"Not at all."

Kira took Deanna's hands and gave her a gentle kiss goodbye. She could feel Troi's power flow through her. As Deanna disappeared; never to return; Kira tried to put into perspective what had just happened. The scent of honeysuckle dissipated as well. Kira went over to the table and picked up the ring. She noticed that it was engraved on the inside. Kira tried to read what it said. She wondered if the ring Laren wore was engraved as well. She was able to make out the message on the inside of Deanna's ring.

REMEMBER I WILL LOVE YOU ALWAYS.

GIVE THIS TO SOMEONE YOU LOVE.

Kira smiled as she read the inscription. It was as if Deanna had known what would happen. Kira decided that she'd better get some sleep. It was very late and she had the morning watch in Ops.

CHAPTER 12

Kira returned to Sickbay in the morning just before she went on duty to see Laren and Kestra. She had the ring that Deanna left behind with her. As she entered, she found both Doctor Bashir and Doctor Schleigh in his office.

"Major Kira, have you come to see Lieutenant Ro?" asked Doctor Schleigh.

"Yes I have. Is she awake?"

"Yes she is. Both she and the baby are doing well," said Doctor Bashir.

"I'm glad. I see you're still here Doctor Schleigh. How do you like our little home?"

"It's hard to say. I must say that I did find Quark's establishment 'interesting'."

Kira laughed. She'd heard the local watering hole called a great many things, but interesting was rarely used. The adjectives which normally came to mind were: raucous, bawdy, and unscrupulous. But that was expected with a Ferengi as the owner. Kira went over to where Laren was laying. She found a young woman talking to Laren as she came around the corner.

"Kira, good morning. I'd like you to meet Lieutenant Commander Lee May K'Mpel. She's the ship's Counselor on the U.S.S. Merlin. We had some long talks during my trip here. Lee, this is Major Kira Nerys, DS9's First Officer."

"How do you do Commander?" said Kira as she shook hands with Lee May.

"Major, I'm honored," said Lee May.

Kira then noticed the earring that Lee May wore. Laren was partially sitting up on the biobed.

"You're Bajoran?!"

"Only half; the rest is Betazoid."

"I see. Wait ---- did you say you name was Lee?"

"Actually, my family name is K'Mpel. Mother felt it easier to use it as a last name rather than the first name to make it easier for me when I grew up on Betazed."

"I'd heard of a K'Mpel Nivel when I was in the ShaaKar. Is he any relation?"

"He was my father."

"Then, I'm the one who should be honored. Your family name is revered within the ShaaKar. We'd thought the family had been killed. What happened?"

"That's a long story, and for another time perhaps. Right now, I have duties aboard the Merlin."

"How do you like DS9, by the way?"

"It certainly is different. I understand that you've had quite a lot of traffic since the wormhole was discovered."

"Yes, in fact, several vessels are due to arrive from the Gamma Quadrant today. The best place to observe the wormhole is the upper level of the Promenade."

"I'll have to watch for it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll leave you two alone for awhile."

Counselor Lee May K'Mpel left the two women alone. When Kira saw Lee go around the corner, she leaned over and gave Laren a kiss. Then she reached into the pouch behind her belt. She laid the ring on Laren's lap. Laren had a stunned look on her face. She recognized the ring immediately.

"Where did you get this?" she asked.

"I had a visitor last night after I left here. Deanna was waiting for me when I got to my quarters. She left that for you. Did you know she had it engraved? Read the inside."

Laren couldn't believe that Deanna had visited Kira. And why had she given Kira the mate to her wedding band? Kira could see the questions on Laren's face. Kira knew she'd have to explain what was going on. Laren picked up the ring and read the inside. Then she began to cry. As Kira took Laren in her arms and held her close, she explained the rest.

"It's all right my love. Deanna wanted you to have the ring. She wanted me to know that what we share is right. I think this was her way of giving us her blessing. She wants you to be happy. She knows that we care for each other. I'm glad I had a chance to meet Deanna. She's quite a lady. Not many men; or women --- for that matter; would 'give away' what they have. She said that she'd always watch out for all three of us."

Laren looked up and saw Lee May in the doorway with Kestra in her arms. She came in and put the baby in Laren's arms.

"She's beautiful Laren. She has Deanna's eyes. Good luck to you both."

Kira watched her go. She wondered how she knew what Deanna looked like. Her expression prompted Laren to explain.

"Lee May and Deanna attended Starfleet Academy together. It's all right. Lee is 'family'".

Kira nodded her understanding. Laren took her free hand and reached up to touch Kira's cheek. Kira bent down and kissed Laren. Laren picked up the ring that was still laying in her lap and put it on Kira's finger.

"I love you Kira Nerys."

"Laren, I love you too. Are you sure you want me to wear this ring? It did belong to Deanna."

"Yes. That's why she left it. You both have the same ring size. I think she knew this would happen all along. That's why she came to you. So that you would understand."

Kira could feel the tears begin to gather in her eyes. Laren handed the baby to Kira. Kira took the baby in her arms and held the little life close to her heart. She wondered if she would be able to help this little life grow strong and healthy on DS9. She wished Kai Opaka were there to bless this child. Perhaps she could ask Vedak Bereil to give his blessing later.

"Laren, I promise that I'll do my best to take care of you and Kestra."

"I know you will. That's all I ask."

Doctor Bashir entered to see how his patients were doing. Laren asked him if it was all right for them to go back to her quarters.

"I don't see why not. There don't seem to be any complications. You're both doing just fine. Do you need any help?"

"That won't be necessary Doctor," said Kira.

"Very well. I'll let Commander Sisko know that you're being released from Sickbay. Come back in a few days for a check-up and return to duty status. Until then, rest is my prescription. I'll schedule an appointment for both of you for the first of the week."

"All right Doctor. Thank you for everything."

As the two women left Sickbay with Kestra, Lee May noticed that Kira was now wearing the mate to Laren's ring. She remembered that; at one point the night before; she sensed the presence of Deanna Troi on the station. She must have given the ring to Kira to return to Laren. Now Laren had given back to Kira. It seemed that Laren had come full circle. Her life began on Bajor; went on to Starfleet; then returned to Bajor. And now Laren was moving on to a new life with a new partner and a child. The circle was closed.

  THE END
