Destroyer Novik in action in the Baltic Sea during WWI.
Combat History: Novik was the prototype ship of a series of 37 destroyers which served with Baltic and Black Sea Fleets. Entered service August 1913, at which time it was the fastest warship in the world. Participated in a minelaying operation near German coast on 5-7 Nov. 1914 which cost the German Navy armored cruiser Friedrich Karl sunk and light cruiser Elbing damaged. Another minelaying operation on 7 May 1914 near the coast of Lithuania; one day later these mines sink German destroyer V-105. Participates in several fleet operations, provides artillery support to land forces. On 17 Aug 1915 intercepts two German destroyers returning from a raid in the Gulf of Riga; evading Novik's fire, V-99 strays onto a Russian minefield and sinks while V-100 returns to base with heavy damage. Takes part in several offensive minelaying operations near German coasts in late 1915; German losses from these operations include light cruiser Bremen, old light cruiser Freya, destroyers S-177 and S-191, and several merchant vessels, all sunk. On 18 May 1916 with two other destroyers attacks a German convoy from Sweden and sinks auxiliary cruiser Hermann, two escort ships, and 5 transports. After Revolution renamed Yakov Sverdlov and reclassified as training ship. Returns to active service after German invasion of USSR, performs escort operations and artillery support to ground troops. Sunk by a German mine during Baltic Fleet's withdrawal from Tallinn to Leningrad on 28 August 1941.
The Novik--class destroyer was conceived immediately after the end of the Great Asian War, following the major defense review which formulated the new Russian space doctrine. Even though the idea of a major ship-building programme right after the end of the war ran into some resistance, it was obvious to all that the war emergency Tulas were patently unsuited for the anticipated nature of space warfare. After some deliberations it was decided to abandon the idea of a balanced fleet of several different classes of ships with mutually complementing capabilities and concentrate scarce R&D and procurement resources on a single class of multipurpose destroyers capable of long-term deployments, possessing high tactical speed and relying on heavy missile armament for both offense and defense.
The final specification called for a ship class capable of consistently defeating the Manchurian Chien-Lung/Fantan combination in one-on-one engagements and which would serve as a deterrent to Ukrainian Kievs and Konstantins which also began entering service in the early 2290's. At the same time, the ship could not cost more than 110Mlv to ensure a reasonably high rate of construction of one ship per year.
The prototype ship of the class, Novik (Proyekt 1356.1), entered service in 2291, and its sister ship, Izyaslav, shortly afterwards in 2292. Even as their construction was proceeding at a rate of one ship per year, Russian engineers were already at work improving the design. The result was the Novik-M (Proyekt 1356.2) which introduced an advanced composite hull instead of LP synthetic. Plans to introduce a higher-efficiency stutterwarp drive were dropped on the grounds of cost. Russian design bureaus are already developing an assault transport variant on the basis of the original Novik design, the Novik-T. Designed to transport up to a company of troops together with associated landers, it will carry reduced armament (2-4 lasers, 2 missile packs) and possibly a smaller powerplant. The budget for 2303 provides for 2 Novik-Ts in addition to one Novik-M.

Following Russian government's decision to enter the Kafer War as a co-belligerent power, the 5th, 6th, and 10th Destroyer Divisions were combined into the 1st Eskadra under the command of Kontr-Admiral Vladimir Ivanovich Tomashevskiy, a decorated combat veteran of the Central Asian War. The Eskadra was transferred under the operational command of Admiral Rochemont in March of 2302, and in May of the same year its ships began offensive sweeps into Kafer space supporting operations of Killiecrankie-class intruder scouts.
NOTES: I redesigned the Novik to eliminate some of the design errors
I made in the original version and to make it a more distinctive design.
I departed from NAM in that I designed the main hull and both of the spin
habitats as separate hulls, totalling the mass and volume and reflected
signatures. The result was that the ship's signatures went up considerably
(in no small part due to gratuitous use of submunition dispensers and missile
packs). Instead of putting missiles into bays I invested in some
missile packs which saved both a lot of weight and internal volume and
dropped New Military Drive from Novik-M which saved about 40 MLv.
In the end I got a ship that was fast, inexpensive, endowed with a formidable
long-range punch and respectable short-range firepower as well.
