Veleda's Tale

The lore you seek is old,
Yet I know the story well,
Forget what you've been told.
Listen to the tale I tell.

In the dawn of the world,
On a frosty winter morn,
As snowflakes spun and whirled,
It was then that I was born.

Eight sisters lived with me;
We were the daughers of the dawn,
Gifted with prophecy:
The daugthers of Oberon.

With visions we were raised
In the palace of the king.
The goddess Eir I praised
While the land was darkening.

We battled through the night
'Gainst the servants of the Flame.
Tho' our courage shown bright,
We lost peasant, lord, and dame.

Men rallied to the light
As we held the banner high.
We fought with all our might,
But darkness filled the sky.

One sister died in flame,
Two more I lost to war.
Soon after I became
Chosen to protect the lore.

The goddess came to me
Offering this holy chore:
To know man's destiny,
The past, future, and more.

I left my father's hall;
I took the goddess' hand.
Then Oberon did fall,
And the flame destroyed the land.

My power I would use,
With a whisper, shout, or roar
As guardian or muse,
To alter the course of war.

I have stepped out of time,
To this place between the lands.
Upon this rocky climb
I watch the shifting sands.

But always I am here
Amidst the sparkling sea.
From in my tower near,
I watch all of history.

The patterns yet to be,
Future deaths and victories,
Reveal themselves to me
As a whisper on the breeze.

Veleda
Picture of Veleda in Sierra's Realm.

The historic prophetess Veleda (possibly born in the German town of Bochum) served the Bructeri tribe of Germania. Tacitus wrote in 98 CE that her gift of prophecy was so highly regarded that she was, for a long time, considered a deity. She used this influence to encourage the revolt of Civilis.

The current Veleda can boast no such powers; as a matter of fact, the current Veleda suffers a distinct lack of prophetic ability during exam time.
