Your site is commendable, but I think it would be better to have sections on the real Ibn Fadlan journal and the deliberate inter-weaving/retelling of the Beowulf saga. Although it's a wonderful book and a good movie, I am afraid that people will think th
t the story is true in it's entirety. It's a work of fiction, and can't be accepted as literal historic truth.
You could have something about the 10th Century Viking settlers of Kiev (the Rus), which is where Buliwyf comes from. You could have a link that explains the history and rules of the duel that takes place (Holmgrang). You could discuss the Viking's settle
ents along the Baltic Sea coast, and the friction it caused with the indigenous peoples -- one of the fiercest of them being a tribe called the Veniti or Wends (I suspect they were the real model for the Wendel). And so on.
Other than that, great work.

I know of the historic account Of Ibn Fadlan's observance of the "Rus" near the Volga River. The beginning of the movie had me riveted at first with it's historical references. The funeral, filthy living etc. He was also intrigued with the stature of the
ikings stating that he has never seen a people of more "...perfect physique-as tall as date palms..." Although the story ran fictional, I found it very entertaining. Some of the movie's artifacts were similar to ones I have seen in archeological findings.
I did not know that the vikings possesed a sword with a two handled grip similar to a "Scottish Claymore"...I want one. All in all; I enjoyd the movie. I wish there were more like it........good show Antonio!

I read part of Ibn Fadlans tale in a book called "Eye witness to history". A wonderful book full of little historical tidbits- I highly recommend it. As such i was very dissappointed by the film. The rich detail of the Northman funeral as presented by
adlan was so glossed over in the film that it left a huge void. The characters were lame. Great duel though. I am a competetive fencer and i LOVED the fight-Nice evade counter to head chop. Ouch! Very disappointed with the Wendol "Mother". She should have
been some really heavy woman with really dangly boobs- you know a real Venus of Willendorf. Nuff said. Pretty much thumbs down.

Michael Crichton, you got me there for a while; what with all the introduction, footnotes, and exhaustive references. That was a neat intellectual trick/exercise. But I got wind of the fiction part when the Northmen would not let Fadlan go but insisted on
his staying; I mean, why? Of what use is an untrained, tight-ass Arab to fearless, careless warriors? It was just a teeny bit contrived.
Also, there was a little slip: After establishing that the Northmen were not wont to mourn death among them in any manner, Herger weeps at the death of Bulywif. Well, you just can't help but insert a little modern Anglo-Saxon sentiments, anyway. Would've
one the same thing.
But I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I await the arrival of the film to our shores.

I am a history fan. I have even read the real account of Ibn Fadlan. The movie captures a series of episodes from real history: the Viking funeral and the hygienic habits of Vikings. M. Crichton's adaptation of his story and Boewulf is
intricate. The movie makes shortcuts; but, the dialogue, the story, and the images hints at what is missing from the movie itself. John McTiernan's canvassed a wonderful story turning it the novel into Ibn Fadlan's journey of self-discovery. The costum
design and choice of decor is costly and essential to storing telling (even the gladiator's helmet of one of the Viking warrior. A film is not only words; but, it is also images and moods. Even Banderas makes a credible portrait of Ibn Fadlan. The com
ination of various languages makes the movie wonderfully credible (exchanges in old Norse and Latin). I encourage people to see the movie and expect it to be like the book. Each has its own qualities. Have fun!

I just started reading the book. Crichton is awesome. Very glad they are making a movie out of it. It is an awesome story. I believe it's based on a true story? Those make by far the best movies. When is it due out?
