As many of you know, on May 29th 2003, the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord, my beloved wife Elizabeth passed into eternal rest, exactly four weeks after we celebrated our 43rd wedding anniversary. In March, Liz’s health took a turn for the worse as her chemo stopped working and the tumors that had spread to her lungs began to grow. We had hoped that a new chemo, being released in May would make the difference, but the cancer progressed too rapidly and all drugs failed to stop the disease. She entered the hospital the day after Easter to have fluid removed from her lung cavity and came home after three weeks for Mother’s Day. But the progress made by her doctors was not enough and she returned to the hospital after being home only one week. Two weeks later, she died peacefully with all of us at her side.
The children and I are proud of Liz; proud of the courageous battle against Pancreatic Cancer that she waged for five years with dignity and without complaint, living a full life during her battle with cancer, continuing to work and function as a loving wife, mother and grand-mother, and to do all that she wanted to do including travel to Medugorje in 2001. Liz did not let this disease beat her; considering the gravity of Pancreatic Cancer and the life she lived, she was in control, not the disease. She never let her illness interfere with her or hold her back. And with the grace of God, she lived those five years in comfort and enjoyment. We are proud also of the life she lived, the person she was and the respect and dignity she deserved and received from her relatives, friends, co-workers and acquaintances as attested to by the multitudes who paid their respect in person or otherwise and the kind and consoling words all had to say of her. We grieve and miss her, but we are selfish. She has received the reward she deserved and rests in a far better place forever more. We thank all of you who have been caring and praying for the past five years. I’m sure the reason for her having done so well is directly related to your concern and prayers. And again, we thank all who expressed their condolences and memorialized Liz by word, deed, flowers, cards or otherwise.
