Of course most of us know who Anne Rice is, but if you like things a little on the dark side and have not read her vampire chronicles, then I highly recommend it. Not to say that I am dark, but I enjoyed it anyway. I also wish I had access to a deal like this when I read the series, as this set is about half off the cover price if you buy the installments individually.

If you have never experienced Momoday you are in for a pleasant surprise. N. Scott Momoday is a very articulate writer who puts his talent to work to tell his stories of the Native American like only someone with his unique experiences can. His characters are a bit too bold for young readers, but I would definitely recommend any of his works.

Now I realize not everyone here is a brilliant astronomer who can explain blackholes matter of factly, but you don't have to be to read professor Hawking's book. He did us the favor of writing in such a way that the rest of us can at least have a chance. So, why did this book interest me? Hey there's a big universe out there, and I'm just curious. In my opinion, A Brief History of Time was a worthwhile read.

Yashar Kemal was my introduction to Turkish literature in college, beginning with this book. I went on to seek out and read all of Kemal's books. There was just something compelling, no, more like magical, about his stories of common folk on the plains in Turkey. I saw my own society through the eyes of the more primative villiagers in his stories and realized just how similar we really are. Be prepared to have your beliefs challenged.

Memed, My Hawk is a bit different from Kemal's other books, perhaps a bit more tragic. Just imagine losing everything you have because you defended the one you love, and finally avenging her by becoming a ruthless villian, but a bit too late to do her any good. Now imagine you are a boy in your early teens. There are quite a few surprises in this tale. Definitely Kemal at his best.
