Welcome To The Chico Rei Gold Mine.
Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Appropriately located in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil, the Chico Rei Gold Mine is unique and exciting. Within Minas Gerais (Genral Mines) there are dozens perhaps hundreds of gold mines. The Chico Rei Gold Mine is the only formerly slave-worked gold mine still open to the public.
400 meters of tunnels are illuminated from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM seven days a week. There is still gold in the mine! A sturdy and brave spelunker can, with permission, explore the 80 Kms of shafts, tunnels, and rooms dug by African slaves in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
The mine is nearly 300 years old. Some of the ceilings and walls have collapsed or are collapsing at this moment. Please explore the mine through this web site before your first visit. Be part of the history, please sign the guest book in the reception area. Click on the gold bars below. Read about Chico Rei. Learn about the history of the gold mine.
