1/10/2006 | Christmas vacation costs us LOTS of money |
Our Christmas vacation, which consisted of a long drive to California to visit my family in Fort Bragg, and Megan's brother in Marin County, turned very expensive when a December 29th phone call (Mike's birthday) from our dogsitter Rick in Albuquerque gave us the news that Hannibal was sick again. Vet visits and lots of attention later, Hannibal is better and we have a big bill. Not only that, but our clutch burned out in Kingman, Arizona on the way back. We limped into Albuquerque and got it fixed for $750. Ouch! |

12/29/2005 | Mike's birthday |
Aren't I the youngest 42 you've ever seen? Or perhaps the oldest looking 22 year old you've ever seen? |

11/25/2005 | Sarah James makes second Albuquerque visit |
Some weeks ago, Sarah James made a first visit to Albuquerque when she came down to visit and stay with us. Now she has made her second visit, to visit a friend named Bill. She celebrated Thanksgiving Day with us and our friend Anne Avellone, and we all had a nice Thanksgiving feast at Anne's house and watched a movie, Wet Hot American Summer. She even forgave Mike for messing up the ingredients to the very popular green bean casserole that everybody but him seems to know about. |

9/7/2005 | Stephen and Julie Holzenthal were at NO Convention Center |
We just found in a Google search this morning that Stephen Holzenthal and his wife Julie were among the people who waited at the New Orleans Convention Center for days to be evacuated. Besides not having food nor water, and dealing with the gangs preying on people after dark, it was made more stressful because their newborn baby had been in a neonatal unit in a city hospital. The article stated that the baby had been evacuated to Alabama, but Stephen and Julie were left behind. While I'm reasonably sure that they had been evacuated, I'm not sure if they have been reunited with their daughter, Zoe. Stephen was with Mike in the UNO Political Science program. Mike was able to find Les White in El Dorado, Arkansas tonight. We also received e-mail confirmation from Lacey Hoagland that her mother, Susan Hoagland, is safe in Austin, TX. Les told us that Gertraud Griessner and her family will move temporarily to Washington state and enroll their children in school there. |

9/2/2005 | National Guard and relief finally moving into New Orleans |
CNN and Fox are just reporting that National Guard troops are finally moving into New Orleans. Finally. After 5 days in which people have been starving, thirsting and dying, finally the troops and relief are moving in. I don't know what is wrong with our federal agencies and administration, but their inaction over five days allowed the city to descend into anarchy, and left people desperate. This is not to denigrate the efforts of the Coast Guard and other rescue workers who pulled people off roofs. That is very important. The needed relief effort was missing, and people died as a result. For current news on New Orleans right from the source, go to www.nola.com |

9/2/2005 | Mike and Megan celebrate 10 years of marriage | Unfortunately, our joy is overshadowed by the events along the Gulf and especially New Orleans. Please keep the people of New Orleans in your thoughts.
9/1/2005 | Patrick Hall safe and sound | Patrick Hall, Mike's colleague from the University of New Orleans, just e-mailed today that he is safe. We were very worried about him because as a City of New Orleans employee, he was in the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina. We hadn't heard from him in days. Patrick is currently at the Hyatt New Orleans and awaiting evacuation to Baton Rouge. From there he will make his way home to Ohio.

Ursula is from Innsbruck, Austria and has a 6 year old son named Felix. Nick is from New Orleans. Ursula's father, her two sisters Helena and Maria and her niece Felicia attended the wedding, which was held at the Columns Hotel on St. Charles Avenue. People on the streetcar clapped and cheered as they went by as the happy couple completed their nuptials. Nick and Ursula are honeymooning in Honduras.

Little David will now have a sibling! Congratulations to their family!
7/15/2005 | Mike is being published! | A paper that Mike co-authored with a professor at the University of New Orleans and another author, on whether German identity has become a European identity, has been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. German Studies Quarterly will publish the paper most likely sometime in 2006. He also was named a graduate fellow by the American Academy of Political and Social Science for 2005.
7/13/2005 | Bruce Campbell visits the Guild Theater in Albuquerque | We went to see Bruce Campbell (known for his starring roles in the Evil Dead movies and his appearances on Hercules and Xena Warrior Princess) screen his new movie, The Man with the Screaming Brain at our local art theater. He was very funny in his pre-movie talk, taking questions from the audience and generally ripping on the movie industry as it is today. Bruce pretty much explained that most of the movies you see today are B-movies masquerading as A-movies. He said, and I paraphrase: "If a guy is bitten by a radioactive spider, that's a B-movie." Man with a Screaming Brain is pretty much B-material, and very silly. Bruce plays a pharmaceutical executive who goes to Bulgaria, gets killed and is resurrected by crackpot Russian scientists played by Stacy Keach and Ted Raimi. It's worth a look at Bruce's directorial effort because the movie doesn't take itself seriously. Actually filmed in Bulgaria.
7/9/2005 | Junior Brown concert downtown | Albuquerque has "Sizzlin' Summerfest" concerts in the downtown plaza. In a nutshell, see Junior Brown if you can or get his CDs.. We learned about him in Texas, but this is the first time we saw him. You think he's country, but he does rock, blues, jazz and even Hawaiian surf music. One of the best guitarists we've ever seen. He plays a guitar of his own invention, which is electric guitar on top, and electric steel guitar on the bottom. |
