East Los Angeles College was recently featured in The Honor Roll of The Hispanic Outlook for Higher Education, March 11, 2002 issue. Titled - East Los Angeles College: Largest of the Public Two-Years in L.A., and Growing by Roger A. Deitz, the article provides ample comments from college president Ernest H. Moreno.
The major achievement highlighted by the article is the success the college has enjoyed in educating Hispanics. According to figures from the National Center for Education Statistics, U. S. Dept. of Education, ELAC was second only to Miami-Dade Community College in total enrollment of Hispanic students and second in awarding Associate Degrees to Hispanics. However, ELAC awarded a higher percentage of degrees to Hispanics, 75.7% versus 57.1%. This was based on a 95% response poll ranking the nation's community and junior colleges.

of Alabama's football stadium. Using digital FX, a small crowd which
was filmed at ELAC, appears to fill the entire stadium. Forrest Gump was notable for winning an Oscar for Best Picture in 1994. Tom Hanks also won Best Actor for his portrayal of the title character. |
