Stephen King Fact File
King was born on September 21st, 1947, in Portland, Maine. In 1949 his family
moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, after his father left and was never heard from
again. After another move to Stratford, Connecticut, they settled down in 1958
in Durham, Maine.
Sometime in 1959/60 King discovered a box of science-fiction and horror books
at an aunt's house. From 1962-66 King attended Lisbon Falls high school, then
went to University of Maine at Orono, graduating with BS in English and a minor
in speech in 1970. In UMO he also met Tabitha Spruce, who he married in 1971.
Between 1971 and 1973 King taught English at Hampden Academy, living in a
trailer and writing for magazines as an extra source of income.
In 1973 he became a full-time writer, publishing Carrie. After several moves,
he reached Bangor, Maine in 1980. In the words that grace so many of his books... "He lives with his wife and their three children in Bangor, in Maine, his
home state and the place where he feels he really belongs."
