Reaction against Rationalism

Pietism and Methodism Reviewed

Pietists approach the Bible from the experiential standpoint in which applying truth to daily life is key.

Romanticism and Shleiermacher

In his (1821) book The Christian Faith Shleiermacher presents religion not as a set of beliefs and obligations based on the authority of the Bible or the Church, but as the result of human being's feeling of absolute dependency in a grand universe of which they are only a small part. The goal of religion is to develop a feeling of dependence upon God.
