Buddhist Association of Olympia and Neighboring Communities.
The BAONC was established at 7:00 PM January 1, 1989. Created from a
general meeting of Vietnamese Buddhist living in Olympia and its vicinities,
the association held weekly services and gatherings at the Olympia Community
Center to raise enough money to eventually purchase or build the first
Vietnamese Buddhist temple in the capital city. |
|
|
Luckily, in 1990, BAONC purchased a Korean church and transformed it
into the Lien Hoa Buddhist temple. With dragon dances, fire works, a small-scaled
fair with food and games, and performances of traditional dances, approximately
200 to 300 Vietnamese people residing in the tri-cities, Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater,
and the nearby cities, gathered to celebrate what ones classified as the
first traditional Vietnamese New Year ever celebrated in this capital city.
The tradition has been carried on even to this day. |
|
The Lien Hoa temple is not only the base of the Buddhist Association
of Olympia and Neighboring Communities, but also the headquarters of the
Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States, Lien Hoa (Olympia)
Chapter. |
|
The Lien Hoa Buddhist Temple located in Southwest Olympia, the capital
city of the ever popular Washington State where rain exists for over four
months a year, has been GDPT Lien Hoa's beloved home for over five years.
