About HI-RISE
|
|
Valerie Dunn, having lived most
of her life in apartments, realized that too often living
in an apartment, townhouse, or condominium, was seen as
limiting, isolating, and cold. She believed it did
not have to be that way. She founded HI-RISE as
a publication with the goal of helping encourage a sense
of community and togetherness in the high rise community.
Another goal is to encourage creative, positive
approaches to life. |
|
|
|
|
|
That HI-RISE is in its
nineteenth successful year is testimony to how many people
have seen value in those goals. People have supported HI-RISE
in helping achieve them. Many people have enjoyed reading HI-RISE
and have found it useful.
Most of our writers and readers, like Valerie Dunn
herself, are apartment and townhouse dwellers or condo
owners. HI-RISE focuses on our concerns. But our
concerns take in, of course, a wide (more ...)

variety of areas. HI-RISE enjoys support
from many people who like our positive approach. The
newspaper is not sponsored by any association or
group, it is not part of a chain, and it is not owned by
a daily newspaper. Our independence gives us impartiality
and freedom to concentrate on our positive goals and on
bringing people together. HI-RISE
is a truly independent community newspaper.
Every now and then we see
"slick", "upscale" condominium
publications appear, and usually later disappear. And
after many years we still run into a surprising
number of people or groups who think that only people who
live in houses matter, and so who give us the
cold shoulder. Meanwhile, HI-RISE continues to work away,
as it has for nineteen years, for the real interests and concerns
of all high rise and townhouse (more...)

residents, whether tenants,
co-op members, or condominium owners. The
newspaper is distributed to selected high rises,
townhouses, co-ops, and condominiums in the greater
Toronto area;85% door to door. For some areas, like Don
Mills and Thorncliffe Park, we are the community
newspaper. There are 7 area editions of the newspaper.
Distribution to high rises and condominiums has to be
done properly and no more often than monthly. Distribution is done by responsible
adults with a professional company, with an excellent
reputation --- one more reason we have access to
buildings to which no one else has access.

Circulation includes rental, co-op,
public, and condominium units. The latter, including
Concorde Place, Skymark, Empress, and Place Nouveau, are not
vacation or time-sharing units, but full time homes. HI-RISE is also
distributed to selected businesses. Small
quantities are available at some (more ...) <<

Valerie Dunn's unique editorials are one
of the most popular features in HI-RISE.
HI-RISE isnot a religious
publication --- the staff, volunteers, and readers have a
wide variety of beliefs. None the less, many of them,
regardless of their religion or denomination, have said
Valerie Dunn's editorials speak to their lives and
situations, for the thoughts raised, the inspirations
suggested, and more. If you would like to browse through
the editorials, or read more than one, go to the editorials
page. Here is a selection of just a few of the
editorials published: |
