La Paz and Baja California Sur
La Paz (Santa Cruz at that time) was founded the 3rd of May 1535 by Hernan Cortés. In 1596, Sebastian Vizcaino gave it the name of "La Paz" (the peace) .
All the "conquistadores" were very unlucky in their attempts to conquer Baja California. It's only in 1697 that the Jesuits priests succeeded to establish a Mission, in Loreto first and then everywhere in Baja California. (1720 in La Paz).

Nowadays, La Paz is a charming, lovely and peaceful city of 160'000 inhabitants. The climate is delightful even if it can be a "bit" warm in the summer time. A beautiful place for vacation and, of course, to learn some Spanish.
