Grade Curriculum Activities and Overviews
Language Arts
reading /writing/spelling
The 5th
grade language arts program consists of a variety of reading, writing, and
spelling activities. The students will
have weekly spelling tests, in addition to daily spelling activities. Throughout the year, the students will
also be reading a variety of reading materials and books. A few examples will be: Islands of the Blue Dolphins, Holes,
and Johnny Tremain. Each student
will be required to keep a writing folder in which they will keep and organize
their daily and weekly writing activities. Students will also participate in logging daily journal
activities and daily quotes to be handed in on a weekly basis. Students will be expected to participate
in a higher level of thinking while working in the language arts
activities. They will be expected
to participate in group discussion, expressing themselves with appropriateness,
and assist the learning of those in the group in which they work.
Math
The 5th grade math program consists of higher levels of
multiplication, division, fractions, geometry and mental math. This years program will consist of
a variety of hands on activities that will encourage
the students to use daily mathematical
operations in their daily functional life. The program is a spiral - type program; constantly
coming back to earlier topics already enforced. Students will be expected to
have daily homework.
Science
The 5th grade science program covers
three areas of science: life
science, earth science, and physical science. Bellevue uses the Math and Science Center that designs kits
that directly relate to state benchmarks and standards. Each quarter a different kit will be
covered. 1st quarter
will emphasize the live science area.
The kit is called systems.
Students will learn, create, study the life cycle of living organism in
a aquariums and terrariums. 2nd and 3rd quarters students
will work on physical science topics that work with mixtures, chemicals,
levers, wheels, friction and a variety of other areas. The forth quarter covers earth
science. Students learn about the
formation of the earth, RRR, and many other areas. Students will also study daily MEAP vocabulary and questions
that help prepare them for the M.EAP in late January/early February. Students will not have a formal
textbook. They will have quarterly
journal that are expected to be recorded in on a daily basis
social studies
Social studies
in the fifth grade covers American history. Native Americans, exploration, colonization, immigration,
Revolutionary War, and the constitution are areas that are covered. Students will work individually and in
groups investigating the nature of our existence. They will study the CORE DEMOCRATIC VALUES and relate them
to our nations history and their responsibilities as citizens of the community
in which they live. Students’ will
study MEAP vocabulary and answer questions that will prepare them for the
MEAP. Students will interpret
information, study maps, and answer inference questions.
