2) What is all this "SCA" stuff?
The SCA attempts to recreate life in the middle ages in a fun and entertaining environment. There are plenty of opportunities to learn as well as to enjoy yourself. Members of the Society create a "persona", or a historically correct character (Not a fantasy character or actual historical figure).

3) Is this a Renfaire?
There are places to buy things at most events, but this is not the focus of the event, as with the Renaissance Faires. There is usually some sort of combat in the center of the event, surrounded by merchants and pavilions or awnings.

4) Is this a Fantasy Game?
No. If you decide to create a persona, it would not be acceptable to create a "wizard" or a fairy princess. There is a lot of room for creativity, just remember that your persona should be someone who could have actually lived during the middle ages and or renaissance.

5) Are those *real* weapons?
Yes and no. The weapons people really attack each other with are not real, but that doesn't mean they don't hurt, even when wearing a helmet. 

6) I thought all that sword fighting stuff was a guy thing!
Not at all. There are a lot of women who fight.

7) I thought sewing and making costumes was a girl thing!
 

8) Are other people doing this? (Teens, not just old fogies)
It is certainly not just "old foggies", but the truth of the matter is that there are not many teens right now. There are a lot of college aged people involved too.

9) What's an event / tourney / war?
A tournament or tourney is the most common type of event. They take place in a park or large open field. People bring pavilions, which are like large, open tents, and dress in "period garb". There are merchants as well. The day tends to center around the fighting, which usually takes place in the center with all the pavilions arranged around the field. 

10) What "activities" do SCA members participate in?
In addition to tournaments, there are also dances, feasts, and various seminars which are 
sponsored by anyone who is interested.

11) Is this going to be like that 5th grade field trip to fort what's-its-name with the raccoon kin hats? (i.e.: is this going to be B-O-R-I-N-G?)
Not at all. This really is just a lot of fun. Although it is possible to learn at events, that isn't the main idea. The goal is just to have a good time.

12) Are there any cute guys/girls?
OH MY GOD! OF COURSE! I mean, I am there. Oh wait, bad example. Well there are some really attractive guys there, and most of them are wearing kilts or tights.

13) How do I get involved?
It depends on how involved you want to be. To just get to an event, you can email us and we will find a good even and how to get you there and other various details.

14) How much does this cost?
Actually, joining the SCA involved a more financial commitment. The amount varies depending how much you want to do. 

15) What do I need to wear? Where can I get it?
The SCA covers the Medieval period up to the middle of the Renaissance. Anything that was worn in that time is great. There are a lot of stores and places on the net to find costumes and things. If you do any sewing at all, it is fairly easy to make very nice and authentic garb.

16) Can I attend an event before I join?
Yes, and it is suggested that you do. All sites have a "site" fee which is almost always under $5. This will give you a better idea of what the SCA is like.

17) Who can I contact about this? Can I talk to other teens in the SCA?
The sad truth is that there aren't a lot of teens to talk to in the SCA that we know of. We know a lot of really cool adults who are very knowledgeable about all parts of the SCA. Talk to us about your specific area of interest and we will out you in touch with people who can help you find out what you want to know.

18) What's a kingdom / shire / barony? Which kingdom / shire / barony is this?
The SCA divided the world up into kingdoms. This is the kingdom of Caid (pronounced Ci-eed). Caid covers Southern California. Each kingdom is broken up into baronies. The barony we reside in is in the Barony of the Angels. Which barony you live in is broken up geographically. If you care curious, you can find the borders on the net. Shires are smaller divisions within baronies and are sometimes entirely separate from the baronies in which they exist.
