On the 15th of October I got an email that read:
Subject: dave, of course
i do a radio show out here in los angeles and we are having dave on tomorrow. i can't guarantee it but i would like to get a phone number from you where you'll be between 7:30 and 9:00 west coast time in case we have the time to call you. i think it would be neat to hear about the star you named. plus, you would get to talk to david. interested?
Was I interested ?!?
So I sent them the information they requested and went to bed early because I had to get up earlier than usual, and I knew I wouldn't be able to get any sleep at all. I ended up getting about six hours sleep, and waking up three hours earlier than I had to, and being so wound up I couldn't eat anything.
I passed the time writing my story for the SPCDD Halloween competition, and listening to all my clips of David's voice again, and just saying to myself over and over "Don't stutter. Just don't stutter. Be calm. Be cool. And don't stutter." Also going over all the stuff I meant to say. I thought if I rehearsed it enough I might be able to actually talk to him and like know he was listening to it and not totally panic and collapse.
The time passed, I kept looking at the clock and checking the time difference between here and there and figuring out how much longer until the last possible time they could call and pretty much counting down the minutes. Then it got to when I figured was 9:00 there and I finally relaxed. "That's it. It's not happening."
Then the phone rang.
I grabbed the receiver before the second ring finished and said hello and the phone replied The other person has hung up. Please replace the handset. The other person has hung up...
AAAGH! Was that them? Is there something wrong with my phone? Am I going to miss the chance of a lifetime because of a bad phone?!
I sat there staring at the phone and when it rang again I snatched it up. "Hello?"
"Yeah, hello. I'm calling for ... becca.. elizabeth?" "Yeah, that's me." "Are you going to be in for a while longer?" "Yeah, I'm always here." All enthusiastic, I'd stay here all year if I could talk to David!
"Okay ..... we're going to call you back in about ten minutes and put you on hold and then you'll be on the show......" So we hang up and I wait. And wait some more. And I'm sure half an hour goes by and I'm thinking they've run out of time or forgotten me or something and then the phone goes again.
So I pick it up and they check it's me again and they put me on hold, and when I was on hold I could almost hear what was on the radio but not quite so I was sitting there straining to hear and the it gets real easy to hear and suddenly they are talking to me and asking me to explain about my web site. So I start off saying it's called the Church of Our Guy David Duchovny and it's about like philosophy and religion and then HE asks me what are the tenets of my religion, and I try to explain without babbling incoherently and I'm not sure I succeeded.
Now I think I sounded totally dumb, but someone emailed me to say they thought I sounded very calm. CALM?!? You know when you are trying to talk to someone you really like and you feel like you are going to faint or be sick or possibly both at once? Imagine that times ten and you get how I was feeling. David was being really great (of course) but there is very little of that conversation I can clearly recall.
So my segment was finished and they put the phone down, and I sat there for a minute kind of stunned, and then I put the phone down too.
And then I phoned my mom to tell her, and emailed the Church list, and most of the people in my guestbook, and some people who had probably never heard of me before, and this is the email I sent:
i got an email from kroq in los angeles and they asked if I'd like to talk to him on the phone and I said yes so this evening 5.30 ish my time they phoned me and I got to TALK TO DAVID DUCHOVNY ON THE PHONE!!!!!!!!!
I am just a teensy bit hyper.
they asked what my web site was about and I said it was called The Church of Our Guy David Duchovny and I said it was kind of about religion and Philosophy and he asked me what are the tenets of this philosophy (HE SPOKE TO ME!!) and I said it was really about looking for truth from wherever you were and there was a piece on karma where he had said something in an interview about karma and I used it as a starting point for a piece on karma. So he said that really confirmed something he had said about how all these web sites go up and it looks like they are all worshipping him and really it is just something that we've got in common and that made him feel good and then I screwed up and I meant to say something about how I totally adored him and I said the site was very much about him too with pictures and voices and stuff and he kinda laughed and said should he say what he'd just said again and I totally was kicking myself and then the radio guy said what he'd liked about my site was it wasn't just another drooling fansite and I said no there were plenty of them out there already and then he said how he wanted me to tell David about what he'd found on my site, and so I got to tell David Duchovny about the star I had named David Duchovny. He liked it :) He said some more stuff to say thanks and goodbye, and then it moved on and they hung up. I am somewhere between totally hyped and totally crushed. I can't remember exactly what I said and it feels totally unreal. Does anybody live where they can get that station and have a tape of it.
I am still looking for a tape, but I have wav clips of the bit when he was talking to me :) :) :)
Update: I finally got hold of a real audio version of the whole thing. I talked for ages compared to anyone else, didn't I!!! way cool. It is in the Sound Archive, along with the wav clips.
Then I went into a bunch of chat rooms and told everyone there. A lot of times. And then I checked my guestbook and someone had asked if it was me on the radio and it was like "Oh wow! It was really real! Somebody else heard it too!" Because by then so many people hadn't believed me I was wondering if I made it all up.
I also emailed a tv show called cyber.cafe which asks for interesting stories from the internet. They have just recently written back to me. Watch this space, we might be going televised. :)
They got back to me, and although they said it was interesting apparently I am outside their region so they can't cover the story. Which even they say is silly since the internet is global, but I guess the money is regional. Oh well, would have been cool.
Then it was time for the E! Online chat. And guess what- that wonderful man actually answered two of the questions I had sent in!
After the chat I phoned my aunt, who is also a fan, and told her I had talked to him. Then I went into chat again and told a new lot of people. Then I changed the message it gives when I walk into the room to say *I TALKED TO DAVID DUCHOVNY!!!* and went in again.
I'm still a bit hyper :)
And totally happy :) :) :) :) :)

bean
