Sri Dasaratha's penance
_______________________

Great kings and emperors though they may be
They will surely be lifeless and unhappy
If in their laps worthy sons don't play
And grow into mighty warriors in this way.

To soothe this worry of the childless king
Sage Vashishta seeing Dasaratha's aching
And encouraging him to do a great offering
A sacrifice was done with his planning.

Lo behold there emerged from the sacrificial fire
A God with a delighted demeanour and glorious attire
And much to the surprise of everyone including the king
He gave him a pot of the most tasty pudding.

By eating this, the king was told
Any of his queens, it was foretold
Would give birth to the most beautiful son
In this world below or beyond the sun!
