"Our dock holds replicas of some of the greatest ships to traverse the deep blue. Even the Ancient Mariner would have been jealous of our holdings here. In addition to ancient Roman trading vessels and Egyptian Royal vessels, we even have a replica of the SSV Westward, the flag ship of Sea Education Association, the program I attended from October, 1999 - January, 2000. She was fondly known to the student crew of W-166 as the 'Sweet Sister,' contrasting the Corwith Cramer's nickname of the 'Fat Sister.' All day long here you will hear the mates voices ringing through the dock and echoing with that of the crew -- Ready on the Main Halyard? Ready on the Main Halyard! Ready on the Jigger? Ready on the jigger! Ready on the downhaul? Ready on the downhaul! Ready on the sheet? Ready on the sheet! Cast away the downhaul, heave away on the halyard, and tend your sheet! And up the sail goes." --- Lisa, Alexandria's head tour guide and historian; Station: Main Desk |

W-166 had the unique opportunity of visiting Cienfugos, Cuba while most US citizens are still not legally allowed to visit the island. Students played soceer with the locals on Carriacou, part of Grenada's holdings. But most important, the community on the Westward developed teamwork in trying situations, creative gifts for a Christmas away from home, an amazing attitude as they rang in 2000 with only Mintaka, Orion, and Capella watching over them, and determination when navigating for 24 hours without the use of *any* instruments including charts, compasses, sextants, or the GPS. Here's to W-166 and its infamous puppet show, field days, swim calls, port stops, dawn watches (and the more infamous dawn cleanups), Jellyfish song in front of Cuban locals, tossing cookies in the scuppers, arching, hiding in the bunks, oreos (folks'l funk!), VACUUM OVERBOARD!, dry storage, hourly checks, hot chocolate even though we were cruising in the Caribbean, saltines!, funk water, SWEET!, Rob & Robyn Woodrow-Rowe, yellow pants, the J-frame, the smell of biomass, counting copapods, the jigger, but most of all -- here's to a quiet evening on bow watch late at night with the dolphins playing in the wake of the bow and spraying phospherescence everywhere. And as Sekla would say, "What's Gybe'in W-166?" |
