Interest Area: Mathematics Teaching at Middle School Level.

I am interested in sharing ideas with teachers of Mathematics at the Middle School level. My own teaching experience covers thirteen years at all levels of Elementary School including in-service training at the Middle School level in Trinidad and Tobago in the English-speaking Caribbean. Additionally, I have seven years international experience at the Vienna International School (V.I.S.), where I was a substitute teacher from 1993 to 1999 and Primary Resource Teacher from 1995 to 1996, a full-time position. I also undertook many substitute teaching assignments in Mathematics, Economics and History in the Middle and Upper Schools of the American International School in Vienna. from 1996-1999. I later taught grades one and two full-time in the Volksschule Donau City, a bilingual sprimary school under the Vienna Bilingual Schooling Programme from 1999 to 2001. I moved to the USA in 2001 and first taught grades six and eight Maths and Science at the Solomon Schecter Day School of Essex and Union in West Orange, New Jersey. I now teach Grade 4 at Saint Joseph's Catholic School in Maplewood, New Jersey.

Through teaching at the V.I.S. and the A.I.S., I have become very familiar with the Mathematics curriculum of international schools. I have had considerable experience in teaching Mathematics in Elementary Schools (Primary Schools) particularly at the levels immediately prior to Middle School. I believe that my long experience of teaching Mathematics at this critical transitional level would be an asset to the Mathematics Program at the Middle School level. A good foundation at the elementary school level level is important to grasping more advanced mathematical principles in Middle School. You will note from my résumé on this web site that for a number of years, I was responsible for preparing students for the High School Entrance Examination at my last school in Trinidad in the English-speaking Caribbean. I have had the opportunity to apply this experience at the A.I.S. through substitute teaching assignments in Mathematics in the Middle School.

My academic background has included the study of Mathematics from High School to University. I completed 85% of the credits (approximately 102 semester hours) for a Bachelor 's degree in Applied Economics at the University of the West Indies (U.W.I.). This included compulsory credits in Mathematics and Statistics, prerequisites for the advanced study of Economics. The mathematical and statistical content of my studies at U.W.I. are directly relevant to the teaching of Mathematics. It should be noted too that the methodology of teaching Mathematics was a compulsory part of the two year full-time teacher training program I undertook in Trinidad towards teacher certification.

I am a graduate of London University with a B.Sc.(Economics) degree specializing in Economic History through this University's External Economics programme directed by the London School of Economics and Political Science (L.S.E.). Apart from providing two very useful mediums for the application of Middle School Mathematics, my background in Economics and History gives schools the option of also utilizing me in the Humanities as I can offer History or Economics as additional subject areas along with Mathematics if required.

To further my professional development, I participated in the workshop "Mathematics, A Way of Thinking" organized by the California-based Center for Innovation in Education, in Orlando, Florida in August 1995. The concepts and methodologies I was exposed to and which I have subsequently applied in the classroom are in tune with the International Schools' Curriculum (ISCP). This workshop also emphasized the implementation of the U.S. based National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) curriculum and evaluation standards. I am currently enrolled in a Master's degree program in Education with theOpen University in the United Kingdom as part of my personal program of continuous professional development.

Fellow teachers of mathematics at the Middle School level and other interested persons may contact me at the e-mail address given on this web site.

Interest Area: History and Economics Teaching at Middle/Upper School Level.

I am interested in making contact with high school teachers in the areas of History or Economics. I have myself undertaken a number of teaching assignments in History and Economics in the Upper School over the past year. My teaching experience covers thirteen (13) years at all levels of the primary school system including in-service training at the junior secondary school level in Trinidad and Tobago. I have had an additional seven years international experience at the Vienna International School (V.I.S.) as a substitute Primary School teacher from 1993 to 1995 and later as a Primary Resource Teacher from 1995 to 1996 (full-time). From August 1996, I continued to substitute in the Primary School of the V.I.S. and in the middle and upper school's of the American International School in Vienna. In September 1999, I was appointed as a classroom teacher by the Stadtschulrat fur Wien" (the Vienna School Board) at the Volksschule Donau City, a bilingual primary school until I moved to the USA in 2001. I first taught at the Solomon Schecter Day School of Essex and Union in West Orange, New Jersey from 2001 to 2002 and now teach at Saint Joseph's Catholic School in Maplewood, New Jersey.

I hold a B.Sc. (Economics) degree in Economic History through London University's external Economics program under the academic direction of the London School of Economics and Political Science (L.S.E.). Attached for your review, is a record of History credits completed at London University. I was granted complete exemption from Part 1 of the program in Economic History on the basis of studies in Economics at the University of the West Indies (U.W.I.) in Trinidad and Tobago. You will note that my degree program in History includes, inter alia, course credits in American Economic History from 1783, World History, The History of British Politics, English Economic History.

At the U.W.I., I completed 85% of credits for yet another undergraduate degree in Applied Economics. The program included credits in History of the Caribbean, Economics, Sociology and Politics at the first year level (part 1). Senior level credits included Micro Economic Theory, Macro Economic Theory, Caribbean Economic Problems, Agricultural Development and Policy, Public Finance, Labor Economics in addition to auditing courses in Economic Statistics and Monetary Economics.

To complement my studies in Labor Economics, I also took an optional senior level credit in Industrial Relations. Apart from providing a broad base to my general education, my economics background will also serve to compliment my teaching of History. As economics has played a very significant role in shaping the History of Mankind, I believe that my knowledge of the subject can be a very valuable tool of analysis to me as a teacher of History and Economics.

With a view to furthering my professional development in the field of education, I am studying for an M.A. in Education with the Open University in the United Kingdom. To date, I have successfully completed examination and course work requirements for two of the three modules for this graduate study degree program. The first module in Curriculum, Learning and Assessment was completed in 1997 while the second "Language and Literacy in Social Context" was completed in October 1998. The final module for the award of the M.A. in Education entitled "Child Development in the School, Family and Society will be completed in September this year (1999)

I frequently participate in various seminars and workshops in the United States and Austria on the teaching of English and Mathematics as I believe that it is very important for teachers to keep abreast of developments in their field. For further information, please see section above on Mathematics.

I have 19 years experience as a State Certified teacher, a sound academic background in History as well as in Economics and a very good practical knowledge of the International Schools System and as such would like to share some of my ideas and experiences with other teachers of a similar background.
