Barley of several types, besides the one pictured on this site, were raised in bible times and were better suited to the different growing conditions of the area. Not all matured at once.
These were the winter Barley,
Hordeum hexastichon, and the spring barley, H. vulgare. The
Rie of Exodus and Isaiah and the Fitches of Ezekiel 4 were spelt, Triticum
aestivum var. spelta (Walker).
