April30 - May 2, 1998 - The Tri-Valley High School JR/SR High School Band under the direction of Mr. David r. Schmaldienst, participated in the “Boston Music Festival” April 30, May 1,2, & 3. The 14 schools that participated in the Music Festival represented 9 states. Schools were eligible to participate in any number of musical categories and events that included Choirs, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Bands, Marching Bands, and Soloists. The Tri-Valley Band entered the Concert, Parade, Field Show, and Majorette Solo competitions.

On Thursday, the 3 buses departed for Boston at 11:00 with 102 students and 40 chaperones. Their first destination was the John Hancock Observatory at Copely Plaza in Downtown Boston. The observation deck was high atop the tallest building and offered the students a breath taking view of the nighttime skyline of Boston and the surrounding area for 80 miles. The band checked into the Sheraton Hotel in Needham, MA to get plenty of rest for the Concert Competition on Friday.

The Concerts were held at the Tremont Temple Baptist Church in Downtown Boston, began at 8:00 AM and were completed by 9:00 PM. The Tri-Valley Concert Band was the 4th performing group of the day and did a concert for the 3 College Band directors at 9:45 AM. The band was allowed to perform 1 warm-up piece – Amazing Grace by Chris McDonald and Dave Schmaldienst followed by the 2 main pieces to be adjudicated. The first piece was Hounds of Spring by Alfred Reed followed by Third Suite by Robert Jager. Each judge had a copy of the music score to follow what the band was playing and recorded their comments on cassette while the band was performing. Numerical Scores were than given in each of 6 specific categories. After the concert the band had time to visit the New England Aquarium and take a Trolley Car tour of Boston. The Evening event included a Dinner Cruise on the Spirit of Boston Cruise ship.
