FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Vocabulous?
- Vocabulous is a program that aids in memorization. It is slanted towards learning new words in a foreign language, but it can be used to increase your vocabulary in your own language.
- How much does Vocabulous cost?
- It's free. A small voluntary donation is appreciated but not necessary, and that includes e-mail technical support and free upgrades.
- Which language can I study with Vocabulous?
- You can study any language that you can type on your keyboard. Ready-made databases are only available for Spanish/English at this time.
- How does it work?
- You enter the words you want to learn, their definitions, and examples of how to use them in a database. Vocabulous does all the work of taking care of the database. Then you play a game against the database - it's more fun than Solitaire, and in the process you learn the new words. As you master a database, you merge it with your main database which contains all the words you have learned to date. For review, you play against this main database once a month or so to assure retention of the words.
- So it's a flash card program?
- Well, it's a lot more than that. Vocabulous remembers the words that you have trouble with and repeats them with greater frequency. The words you know never show up again in the same game. When you finish playing, if you want, Vocabulous will create a new database of problem words that you had trouble with. Then you can play against THAT database. A neat bilingual Hangman game is also included.
- Can I get ready-made databases, so I don't have to enter data?
- You can if you are studying Spanish/English. Vocabulous comes with a main database of many thousand words and specialized databases such as forms of the irregular verbs for easy memorizing. Also included is a complete listing of imperfective subjunctive forms of irregular verbs, a file covering the 'Vos' pronoun as used in Costa Rica and the 'Cone' of South America and several files of specialized vocabulary such as things around the house, travel, clothing and such. As of now, there are no ready-made databases in other languages. Feel free to create and market them if you wish.
- Does Vocabulous copy stuff into my registry?
- No. Vocabulous does not mess with your registry nor with your INI files. If you want to uninstall the program, simply delete its directory and it will leave no trace of itself.
