Amara (Laura Osweiler) has performed as a soloist and in Middle Eastern Dance Companies all over the United States. She is versatile dancer whose repertory includes improvisations and choreographies in a number of styles. Amara teaches a course on Middle Eastern Dance at UCLA, workshops at a number of colleges and universities, and at several dance studios. She holds a degree in Music History and Literature and a Certificate in Ethnomusicology from The Florida State University. Having finished her M.A. degree in dance at UCLA she is now pursuing a PhD in Dance History and Theory at UCRiverside. There she continues performing and researching the social, historical, and political positions of Middle Eastern Dance in the United States.

Teaching

In my classes I stress a strong foundational technique through combinations of choreography, improvisation, solo, and group work. Students are encouraged to create their own style and are taught to embellish their performances with props such as veil, zils (finger cymbals), cane, and saber. Besides movements, I also discuss the history of Middle Eastern dance, the differences between various genres, and the issues facing dancers today.
1999 - 2000 Dance of a Selected Culture: Middle Eastern. At the Department of World Arts and Cultures, UCLA - Designed and teach an introduction to Middle Eastern dance for both dance and non-dance majors.

My introductory master classes have three main purposes. Mainly I want students to experience basic technique and styling. Secondly, I want them to gain insight into the culture and challenge any preconceived ideas of the dance form. Lastly, I want them to create a community feeling through dancing for and watching others.

Middle Eastern Dance - Solo
Depending on the venue, my soloist performances include a variety of genres such as cabaret (American, Egyptian, and Turkish), folk, and experimental with additional special sections of either saber, veil, double veil, floor work, tray and candles, candelabras, cane, or zils. They are typically twenty to thirty minutes shows to either live or taped music.
