The Nervous System

The nervous system is very important in the human body. It coordinates the various parts of the body and the organs that control the body functions. The nervous system consists of two separate systems by function. These are the voluntary and involuntary systems. The voluntary system contains the muscles of the body. The involuntary system includes the heart, lungs, digestive tract, and the skin. These all have nerves running through them.

There are two main parts of the nervous system: the brain and the spinal cord. The brain is the "mission control" for the nerves. Nerves leaving the brain go into the spinal cord and through the opening in the center of the backbone. They then branch off into every part and organ of the body.

There are basically two types of nerves. There are sensory nerves which give you feelings such as heat, cold, pain, and the sense touch form different parts of the body. There are also motor nerves which take impulses from the brain to the muscles to cause movement. In these nerves information only travels in one direction. If the brain is sending an impulse to the leg, the leg's reply must take a different route.

The nervous system controls and coordinates our whole body. It starts in the brain, then goes through the spinal cord, and out into the many different parts and organs of the body. The nervous system is very important to our life.
