REVIEW: DOME Jedsee concert with Tannatorn -by Kamiya Kaoru

"Drunk, Messy, Excellently Disorganized "
Desc: DOME? Jedsee Concert Review
Performers: Thannatorn and Dome Pakorn Lum

I was very excited to see Dome perform the songs from his latest album so I can see if he can nail the difficult vocals of Na Gark and to see hopefully the songs from his album that I have yet to hear. You see, I don't live in Thailand and I don't have a copy of his album.

The atmosphere was like that of a private rock club: smoky, stifling(the RS set designers seem to make their stages pretty small) and hot. I can see that it was a packed house, and I can hear screams from girls awaiting DOME to appear.

He started with a very much rock version of "Na Gark" with the drums and guitars amplified louder than the other instruments, the DJ and DOME's microphone. To my surprise DOME(who came from the DJ's corner) sauntered(or was it slithered) towards the front. Hmm...looks suspicious to me. A closer look gave DOME away. Some people may not agree with me but from his slurred speech, the way he move his eyes would seem as if DOME is drunk.

It seems that DOME here gets extra high and energetic as if he has some booze down his throat. If he did really have booze or not , you be the judge.

Well, what happened was "Na Gark" sounded really like a "drunken rampage" by a "half-blind" person who in a few hours will probably have laryngitis. I am pertaining to DOME shouting instead of singing. Well, DOME has a history of flubbing every first song he performs (he flubbed "Tao Pom" in his next Jedsee concert). Oh well, I have to say the DJ and the DJ scratching was phenomenal especially when it comes to the chorus.

Vocally DOME redeemed himself in the two slow songs "Wung Harm Kwarm Rak" "Gnom Kem nai ta lae" where amidst his seeming "drunkenness", both songs were delivered with the intensity and passion one would expect from someone who has a very romantic heart. Maybe, DOME has one and one must remember that he co-produced this album so there's no surprise at the "feeling" he puts in his songs.

A weird thing occured between the two slow songs, he introduced his backup band which no solo artists has ever done yet. I guess he is proud of their contribution to the album although he thanked the DJ first ahead of the rest, and because he was caught up being proud with the DJ scratching elements, he almost forgot to acknowledge the lead guitarist and completely forgot the drummer.

By the way, kudos to the subtle DJ scratching during the instrumental part of this song, the recorded version seems to do away with the DJ scratching.

"Nor Gord" followed next and DOME committed one big booboo by singing the first verse instead of singing the chorus at the start. Thank god, DOME was able to recover. Vocally, this would be his best for he was able to control raising his voice in such a way that it doesn't become a screaming match.

In "Tao Pom", I could barely hear DOME's voice and the DJ scratching for the drums and the guitar were amplified so loud that they dominate the song. The DJ scratching was at a volume lower than the rest, while DOME, tried to shout his way through but could barely be heard.

Overall, they could have fixed the amplification in such a way that no instrument dominates. Also, I have to say I still prefer his solo Jedsee concert because the instruments were correctly amplified and his voice much more controlled. One thing saved this concert, which is the DJ scratching, mostly toned down or absent in the recorded version. Actually a lot of things were so different from the recorded version, it begs for a live album. Anyone wants to lobby for a DOME? live album? I do.

One noticeable thing is that "Gnom Kem nai ta lae" didn't have any mistakes even at the other Jedsee concert. Why so? You be the judge. I am baffled myself.
