A Sermon by Reverend Hollis Ray Mathis

reetings, holy children of God, in the wonderful name of our lord and saviour Jesus, the Christ. The sermon subject for today is:

If I were invited to preach Christ in a Jewish Synagogue

If I were invited to preach Christ in the local synagogue, what would be my text, and how would I reason with them ". If you are not familiar with the Jewish people you may not know what a synagogue is. A synagogue is to the Jewish people what the church house is to the Christian. It is a place to assemble to worship God. In this present world there are multitudes of people that are skeptics, and unbelievers. If a person is not willing to believe the new testament, there is no way that they can be convinced that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God, for the new testament is our proof. But I believe that the children of God will believe when they hear the gospel preached. Therefore I would chose as my opening test. Proverbs 30:4 who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? Who hath gathered the wind in his fist? Who hath bound the waters in a garment ? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell? Saints of God, God had revealed to the nation of Israel that he had a son, by the prophets. But did not reveal to them the name of his son. We, the children of God, are a blessed people to know the name of the son of God, for there is no other name under heaven whereby men may be saved. Jesus Christ is the only God ever formed. Reading from the book of Isaiah 43: ye are my witnesses, saith the lord, and my servant whom I have chosen : that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he : before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. 1l. I, even i,am the lord : and beside me there is no savior. Beloved of God, Jesus Christ is the only God ever formed, or ever shall be formed. We know that God shaped and formed Adam of the dust of the earth, and we know that God took a rib from Adam's side, and shaped and formed the woman eve from that rib. But from what substance did he shape and form the lord Jesus Christ? I believe that God the father spoke, and he took his word, and shaped and formed the word in such a way that the word of God became the son of God. St. John l:l in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. Beloved, Jesus Christ is the only God ever formed, formed from the word of God, and he is the first born of every creature. The creator of all things, whether they be visible, or invisible. All things were created by him, and for him. And, by him all things consist. Colossiansl: ( the apostle paul was inspired of God to record these words about Jesus ). In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins. Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature. For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him. And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. Holy children, Jesus Christ is the only God ever formed, formed from the word of God, the first born of every creature, the creator of all things. God the father created the lord Jesus equal to himself, giving unto Jesus all the qualities, that make God,God. Then it was by the lord Jesus Christ that God created all things. Ephesians 3:9 and to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ. Brothers and sisters in the lord Jesus Christ if I were reasoning with jewish men concerning the fact that Jesus is the Christ, the messiah, I would use these scriptures, micah 5:2 but thou, bethlehem ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in israel: whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Isaiah 7: therefore the lord himself shall give you a sign : behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name immanuel. Psalms 22: I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly. Ll. Be not from me: for trouble is near: for there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax: it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd: and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws: and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. Isaiah 53:3 he is despised and rejected of men : a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were out face from him: he was despised and we esteemed him not. 4. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him: and with his stripes we are healed. 6. All we like sheep have gone astray: we have turned every one to his own way: and the lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth : he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. 8. He was taken from prison and from judgment : and who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. Saints of God, what year is this ? The year is 96. What happened 96 years ago that was so important that men have been counting time from that date every since? Jesus Christ, the son of God, the son of man was born in the city of bethlehem. Where was the messiah prophesied to be born ? In the city of bethlehem. When Christ Jesus the son of God, came into the world, he did not take on him the nature of an angel, but he took on him the seed of abraham. Physically he was a man able to suffer, and bleed and die. Put spiritually he was God:able to turn water into wine, make blind eyes to see, walk on water, raise the dead, to command the wind and the waves. When Jesus was born into the world he was both man and God. He had a miraculous birth, he was born of a virgin. Was it not prophesied, that the messiah would be born of a virgin. I believe that Jesus was God in the flesh because of these scriptures. Matthew l:20( in the verses of scripture the angel is talking to joseph the husband of the virgin Mary ) but while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, joseph, thou son of david, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the holy ghost. 2l. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus : for he shall save his people from their sins. 22. Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the lord by the prophet saying 23. Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Beloved, I believe that Jesus was a man when he was born of the virgin Mary because of these scriptures, hebrews 2: ( the apostle paul was inspired of God to record these words about Jesus ) for verily he took not on him the nature of angels, but he took on him the seed of abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to -- --God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. Brothers, and sisters in the lord Jesus Christ, if any man comes to you and says that he is the Christ, the messiah, say unto him: let me see your hands, and let me see your feet, open your shirt and let me see you side. For the 22 psalm says that they pierce his hands and his feet. And remember that the soldier pierced the side of Jesus with a spear. Look for the stripes, for the 53 chapter of isaiah says that we are healed by his stripes st. John 20: then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, peace be unto you. 20. And when he had so said,he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the lord. 2l. Then said Jesus to them again, peace be unto you: as my father sent me, even so send I you. 22. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, receive ye the holy ghost. 23. Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them: and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. Listen carefully children of God, who has the power to remit sin and to retain sin? Only the spirit filled, born again child of God. When Christ breathed on his disciples and said, "receive ye the holy ghost" this was the reconciliation of God, and man. When Christ breathed on his disciples and said, "receive ye the holy ghost", love came, the kingdon of God came, power came, the new birth came, the inward man the soul of man come to life. You may wonder how I know that love came. God is love. L john 4:8 he that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. Listen carefully children of God, you may wonder how I know that the kingdom of God came. The kingdon of God is in the holy ghost. Romans : for the kingdom of God is not meat and drink: but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the holy ghost. How can you tell little children, if a person has received the holy ghost, and the inward man the soul has come to life. They have the pqwer to live a sin free life. L john 3:9 whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin, for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. May the lord bless you, and your love ones. Greetings, holy children of God, in the wonderful name of our lord and saviour Jesus, the Christ. The sermon for today is the doctrine "saved by faith alone ". Beloved, we as children of God are saved by faith, but when a person says that we are saved by faith alone, that is heresy. Here are the scriptures that the heretics usually use to teach this doctrine. Reading from the book of ephesians, ephesians 2. 8 for by grace are ye saved through faith, and not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. 9. Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Beloved of God, grace is an unmerited favor. We,as children of God,did nothing to deserve God's favor. But from the foundation of the world God loved us, elected, selected, us to be his very own, and predestinated us, to be adopted into the family of God. For by grace are ye saved. Ephesians l. 3 blessed be the God and father of our lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. 4. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love. 5. Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will. Brothers, and sisters in Christ, there are people that do not believe in the doctrine of predestination, and I am inclined to believe that they are not predestinated. But come into this knowledge children of God, all, let me repeat, all of God's children are predestinated, but not all men are children of God. There are in this present world wheat, the children of God, and tares, the children of the devil. For by grace are ye saved through faith. If you are a new convert to the Christian religion, you may not be acquainted with how we, the children of God are saved by faith. When we, the children of God, place our faith and trust in the lord Jesus Christ, and in the blood that he shed on calvary's cross, God the father, allows us to declare the righteousness of the lord Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins passed. This is how we, the children of God, be come perfectly righteous in the eyes of God. Romans3. 23for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. 24. Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. 25. Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God. 26. To declare, I say at this time his righteousness. That he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. 27. Where is the boasting then? It is excluded, by what law? Of works? Nay. But by the law of faith. 28. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. Beloved of God, we are saved by grace, through faith, and that not of ourselves, it is a gift of God, not of the deeds of the law, not of works of the law. I would like to mention at this time that we are saved by faith, for we receive the holy ghost by faith. The world cannot receive the holy ghost, because they cannot see him. St. John. if ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you for ever. Even the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him. But ye know him for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. We, saints of God, are saved by grace, through faith, is true. But there is more to salvation than just faith. Faith without works is dead. James 2. what doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him?. If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food. And one of you say unto them, depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled, notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body. What doth it profit?. Even so faith, if it hath not works is dead, being alone. There are men, unorthodox men, men of the wrong opinion, that say baptizm is not a necessity to salvation, but Jesus has said "except a man be born of water, and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. St. John 3. L there was a man of the pharisees, named nicodemas, a ruler of the jews. 2. The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God, for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3. Jesus answered and said unto him, verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4. Nicodemus saith unto him, how can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mothers womb, and be 5. Jesus answered, verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6. That which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the spirit is spirit. Christian brethren, the margin reference for these scriptures refer the reader to st. Mark. St. Mark. he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned. Beloved the holy scriptures say "he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, which implies, that he that is not baptised will not be saved. Baptizm is so important to salvation that it is scriptural to be baptized for the dead. The apostle paul speaking of the resurrection strengths his argument by saying, "if the dead rise not at all why are people baptized for the dead. L corinthians. 29 else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead. Because of the original sin of adam, when a child is born into the world, they are alive physically, but dead spiritually, the inner man the soul must be brought to life. When the holy ghost comes to dwell within a person the soul comes to life. This outward body of flesh, and blood shall perish, but the inner man the soul is renewed day by day. The soul never grows old and dies. Almighty God, by the mouth of the apostle peter has made us a precious promise, and that is if we will repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ,we shall receive the holy ghost. Acts 2. 38 then peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the holy ghost. There are multitudes of men that do not believe in the trinity, and only baptize in the name of Jesus. But I believe in the trinity, therefore, when I baptize, I baptize in the name of the father, and in the name of the son, the lord Jesus Christ, and in the name of the holy ghost. To be saved a person must find grace in the eyes of God, they must be a man or woman of the household of faith, they must be baptized out of the world, and into the body of Christ, they must receive the washing of regenration, and the renewing of the holy ghost, they must repent. And they eat of the flesh, and drink of the blood of the lord Jesus Christ. Except a man eat of the flesh and drink of the blood of Jesus Christ he will have no life in him. And we eat of the flesh of Jesus rist when we partake of the lord's supper. St. John 6. 52 the jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, how can this man give us his flesh to eat. 53. Then Jesus said unto them, verily verily, I say unto you except ye eat of the flesh of the son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 54. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. Beloved, when the lord Jesus Christ shall return he will divide the nations as a man divides sheep and goats. He will set the sheep on his right hand and the goats on the left. And he shall say to those on his right, come ye blessed of my father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me, I was naked and you clothed me, sick and you visited me. And they on the right shall say when did we minister to thee, and he shall say in as much you have done it to the least of my brethren you did it unto me. Then shall he say to those on the left, depart from me ye cursed, into the everlasting fire, for I was hungry, and you gave me no meat, thirty, and you gave me no drink, sick and you visited me not. Let me summarize what I have been saying. There are men that preach all a person has to do to be saved is believe. They preach that a person is saved by faith alone, but that is heresy. For a person to be saved, they must have found grace in the eyes of God from the foundation of the world. They must be of the household of faith, and they must place their faith in the lord Jesus Christ for their salvation. They must repent, for except a person repents, except a person turns from doing his own will to doing the will of God, and be sorry for his sins past, he will surely perish. For a person to be saved, they must be baptized out of the world, and into the body of Christ. For it is in Christ Jesus, in the body of Christ, that we receive eternal life. For a person to be saved, they must receive the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the holy ghost. For it is the receiving of the holy ghost, that brings the soul to life. For a person to be saved they must work. They must be up and about the lord's business. For a person to receive eternal life they must eat of the flesh of the lord Jesus, and drink his blood. For except a person eats of the flesh of Jesus, and drinks of his blood he will have no life in him. Let me conclude with what I believe is the greatest verse of scripture in the bible. St. John 3. for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Greetings, holy children of God, in the wonderful name of our lord and saviour Jesus the Christ, the sermon subject for today is "witnessing". What is a witness? A witness is either someone that has seen something, heard something, or knows something to be a fact, and is willing to give testimony to the fact, or event. A person may be a witness in court, and give testimony, or be a witness, to a legal transaction, but I want to acquaint you with the person that is a witness for Christ. A witness to the fact that Jesus Christ, the son of God, came into the world, lived a life without sin, offered himself on calvary, was crucified, dead, buried, and resurrected. That Jesus Christ, the son of God, the son of the virgin Mary, lives. Acts l:l the former treatise have I made, o theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2. Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he though the holy ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen. 3. To whom also he showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty day, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. 4. And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me, 5. For john truly baptized with water: but ye shall be baptized with the holy ghost not many days hence. 6. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to israel. 7. And he said unto them, it is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the father hath put in his own power. 8. But ye shall receive power, after that the holy ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in jerusalem, and in all judaea, and in samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 9. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up: and a cloud received him out of their sight. What does it take to be a witness for the lord Jesus Christ? It takes the born again experience, it takes the inward man the soul coming to life, it takes receiving the holy ghost. Before a person receives the holy ghost, he is alive physically, but dead spiritually. When a person receives the holy ghost, and the inward man the soul comes to life, the person becomes a new creature, a new creation. Ll corinthians 5: therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold, all things are become new. Saints of God, before a person receives the holy ghost he cannot live the Christian life, the Christ like life: for the fleshly mind of sense and reason without the holy ghost is not subject to the laws of God. And I believe that the best witness that a Christian can give is by a Christlike life. Romans 8:l there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. 2. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. 4. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after thespirit. 5. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh: but they that are after the spirit the things of the spirit. 6. For to be carnally minded is death : but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Beloved of God, when a Christian week after week gets his bible, and assembles with the saints of God, he is witnessing to the fact that he believes, that Jesus Christ, the son of God, lives. When a Christian will not drink, with the drunkards, will not curse with those that love to curse; but loves to live the quite, and peaceful life, he is testifying to the fact that he believes that Jesus Christ lives. When a person receives the holy ghost, and the inward man soul comes to life, the inward man the soul delights in the laws of God. Romans 7:22 ( the apostle paul was inspired of God to record these words about the inward man ) for I delight in the law of God after the inward man. Little children when the holy ghost comes to dwell within a person, when the anointing comes to dwell within a person, the greatest of all teachers comes to live within that person. And it is not necessary for the born again Christian to go to some fine college, or university, to study theology. For the anointing that we have received will teach us and bring us into all truth. L john 2:27 but the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. You may wonder, saints of God, how that i, h. R. Mathis am able to witness to the fact that Jesus Christ, the son of God, lives. I have been to jerusalem, I have walked up mount calvary, I have been to the empty tomb of Christ Jesus. I have been to the tomb of abraham, isaac, and jacob, but the reason I know that Jesus Christ lives is because he lives within me, and I live within him. Before Jesus came to live within me, I run with the children of the devil, doing the things of the flesh. And one day as I meditated upon my life, especially on one sin that I had committed, I prayed a prayer something simular to this "lord, I repent of that sin, and I will not do it again". And, when I finished the prayer I believe that the lord gave me the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the holy ghost: for I have never been the same since. The bible says that when a person receives the holy ghost, that they become a new creature, a new creation. I know that my lord and saviour Jesus the Christ lives because he lives within me, and I live within his body. Jesus Christ, the creator of heaven, and earth lives within me, and he talks to me, and I talk to him. Now children of God, we are all sinners, but we do not continue in sin after our conversion. Romans 6:l what shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2. God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death ? 4. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Listen carefully, little children, I know that there are preachers, unorthodox preachers, preachers of the wrong, opinion that say a man cannot live above sin. But if a person continues in sin they are children of the devil. The born again child of God does not continue in sinfor God's seed is in him. L john 3:l behold what manner of love the father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2. Beloved now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be : but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him: for we shall see him as he is. 3. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 4. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law : for sin is the transgression of the law. 5. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins: and in him is no sin. 6. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whoso- ever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. 7. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous. 8. He that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9. Whoso- ever is born of God doth not commit sin : for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. Let me ask you a question child of God, when is the last time you invited someone to church? If you invite someone to church, and they come, and receive God's gift of the holy ghost, and are saved. When the fire comes and the things that you see burn, that act, that deed of bringing someone to Christ will not burn, it shall be a credit for you forever. And shall cover a multitude of sin. James 5:20 let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. As you witness child of God, remember they crucified Jesus Christ, they killed the apostle james, they stoned steven, they beheaded john the baptist, so dont expect the children of the devil to thank you for trying to help them. Remember this, please God, not man. Remember also there has been terrible price paid for our salvation: wage war against satan. Greetings, holy children of God, in the wonderful name of our lord and saviour Jesus, the Christ. The sermon for today is the doctrine "saved by faith alone ". Beloved, we as children of God are saved by faith, but when a person says that we are saved by faith alone, that is heresy. St. John. if ye love me, keep my commandments.
