October 20, 1946 - March 20, 1994
Lewis Grizzard, Southern Humourist, was a wonderfully funny man and a dedicated Southener. He is truly missed. His unique sense of humour and his ability to laugh at himself endeared him to fans all over the world.
He has been called many things and has often joked about gays, women and every other class of people. But, he was a good and decent man who cared about his heritage, the south and the state of Georgia.
He made no bones about how he felt and he would use his newspaper column to speak out against anything he felt was wrong. I admired and respected him for that although I didn't always agree with what he said.
And if the song and word "Dixie" are symbolic of the Old South, I guess we ought to stop using "Old South" as well. Instead of
saying "Old South" perhaps we can refer to it as "Back Then," and we can roll our eyes when we use it so everybody will know
we aren't talking about when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, but when slaveholders used to go around singing songs like "Dixie"
and "Eating Goober Peas." But wait. "Eating Goober Peas" is a song from Back Then, too, so don't anybody dare play that at a
football game.
Rap songs about killing innocent people, incidentally, are just fine.
--Lewis Grizzard , from his article "I Wish I Was Politically Correct In Dixie".
"There are probably some things more important than learning how to cook good grits--or, learning how to cook grits
good--but I can't think of any off the top of my head..."
Since Grizzard's , a museum has been established in his memory in Moreland. Lewis Grizzard Museum in Moreland,
is operated by the Lewis Grizzard Memorial Trust. Admission is free - ($1 donations are requested for the Lewis Grizzard
scholarship)
He had a dog named Catfish, had been married four times (and would be the first to make fun of himself for that fact). He often wrote columns that would make you cry and then the next would make you mad.
"In the south there's a difference between 'Naked' and 'Nekkid.' 'Naked' means you don't have any clothes on. Nekkid'
means you don't have any clothes on ... and you're up to somethin!"
Titles of some of Lewis' books....."Don't Sit Under The Grits Tree With Anyone Else But Me." , "Don't Forget To Call Your Mama, I Wish I Could Call Mine." , "My Daddy Was A Pistol And I'm A Son-of-a-Gun." , "When My Love Returns From The Ladies Room, Will I Be Too Old To Care?" ,
After his death, Lewis ashes were cremated. Half were buried near his mother (photo) and the other half were scattered across the 50 yeard line of Sanford Stadium at UGA. He would have loved that one!
