News and Information

March 9, 1999

It is hard to believe a month has past already.  I have been traveling for work and have not had any time to update the page at all.  I still have more traveling to do this month and next, but after that, I should be able to update this site weekly.  I would like to thank everyone who has submitted information for this page.  I can only post what I am given and without the help of several key people this site would have no information.  I would like to point out a certain individual who has given me the majority of information.  Tuffi Dolan has been instrumental in getting this site up and running.  She has provided hole pictures, hole descriptions, and the people's pictures you see on the people page.  Tuffi does allot for disc golf in the Washington State area.
The history page I alluded to in the last update should be coming together rather quickly.  If you have information on the history of disc golf in Washington Sate, I would like to hear from you.  I would like to post the course designers, courses installers and the players who have been playing the courses since their inception.  If you have any of this information, please email me and get that up on the site as soon as possible.  Until next time, "Keep Those Dsics Flying"  TJT 10774

Welcome all Washington State Disc Golfers.  To introduce myself, My name is Terry Toolen and I master these web pages for you guys.  I currently live in the disc golf mecca of the world, Texas.  We have over 68 courses in the state, with 30 within an hours drive from my home course, Veterans Park in Arlington, Texas.  I also help run the Veterans Park Open every year.  Last year we were the third richest tournament in the world.  We also have one of the largest Ice Bowls every year.  Last year we took first place for the most $$$ and food raise by a club.  This year looks pretty good as well.  I was approached late last year to do a web site for the Fort Steilacoom Open.  After talking to several people from the Washington area, I decided to expand the project into what you see here today.  Future plans call for pages for all courses with pictures of each hole.  A history page of all the courses in the state is in the works, but I could use some more help on the info for that.  If at any time you have any information that you feel would be pertinent to list here, please email me and I will get it on the site ASAP.  I would like to update this news and information page once a month, sooner if need be, but I will need your help in listing the information that needs to get out to all golfers of the Washington State area.  We can use this like the message boards, like on the PDGA Disc Golf Course Online Directory.  This way, everyone can check here for updates to all courses instead of ALL the message boards of the courses.
If you couldn't tell, Disc Golf is a big part of my life.  I love to promote the sport, almost as much as I love to play.  Getting new people to play is one of my primary goals.  If this web site gets one more person to play disc golf, casual or tournament play, I have succeeded my goal.  I have made it clear that I do not want anything for doing this.  All I ask is that everyone who plays golf do several things.  First, always leave the course cleaner than you found it.  Most city parks have a trash problem from park users other than disc golfers.  If parks and rec. departments see that we are cleaning up after ourselves and others, they will view disc golf as a positive improvement to older, less taken care of parks.  Second, If you see a new player on the course, talk to them.  Tell them about the sport.  Let them know about the tournament play (ace pots, mini tournaments, leagues, etc.) in the area.  Tell them about the national organization, The PDGA, and how the different divisions help the beginner to advance when their skill improves.  You do not have to tell them everything listed here, they are just examples.  But do talk to them.  They will be our future Climo's and Stokley's.  One thing I do allot is give plastic (discs ) to new players I see on courses.  This shows the effort on my behalf to get more people interested, as well as share some of the wealth of plastic I have acquired.  I always carry a couple really beat up discs for this purpose.  New players can always use old beat up discs to improve their game.  Lastly, support your local and national disc golf associations.  With out the help of local clubs and the PDGA, disc golf would go nowhere.  If you have been involved in disc golf for a while, even the last several years, you can see disc golf growing at rates that were once deemed unreachable.  The local clubs get all those new players to come out to their leagues and mini tourney's, from there they hear about the PDGA tournaments.  Local clubs will be the life force behind the PDGA in the years to come.

Thank you for letting me air my views.  I enjoy doing these pages for you guys and look forward to many years more of designing web sites for clubs everywhere.  If there is a local club that would like to have a web site, email me and I will see what I can do.  As always, I welcome any questions, comments, suggestions, or gripes.  If you disagree with something I say or post on one of my sites, Tell me.  I may not agree with you, but we can discuss the situation and see if we can come to a common goal of what to post on the site.  I want this to help, never hinder disc golf.  Thank You, Washington State Disc Golfers, for the opportunity to do what I love, and I am glad to see this site is so appreciated.
