One of the best shots I've ever made was a chip-in from approx. 35ft with the pin tucked tight and 10ft of green to work with. I've chipped in at least 50 times from this distance, it wasn't just the chip. I'd been struggling all week with a nasty slice during my first Montana State Amateur. On the last day of the tournament I stepped up to the 1st tee, a narrow dogleg left par 4. Determined not to slice I drew the club back and bullwhipped a hook into the trees. Convinced I would reach the green, I rifled a 2 iron into the side of a tree 20ft dead in front of me. Standing 230yds from the hole; mind reeling, palms sweating, embarrassment at its highest, and hope diminishing I slid that 2 iron out for yet another shot. I caught it flush, a low draw that came to rest 25ft from the green. As I approached the next shot I couldn't help but noticed the clump of mud the size of a jaw breaker stuck to the side of my ball. Erasing the clump from my mind, I managed a smooth stroke, the ball landed on the fringe and wobbled staight into the hole, par. On the next hole .................. |
