Name Information

The surname MYER or MYERS is of German or Brittish origin. In the first case, the meaning is "steward, bailiff", but in the second, there are two sources: . Old French mire - physician and . Old Norse myrr - marsh.

The search for the origin of MYERS within our family has led to the following observations:

MEARS

The earliest records of the Holy Trinity Church in Pembroke, Ontario, record John and Sarah with the surname of MEARS. Further investigation through the Diocese of Ottawa advised that the Book of Marriages of Pembroke from the year 1877 to 1887 seems to be missing. A Registration of Baptism for a daughter (Ethel), born 16DEC 1887 was found.

The family surname of MEAR or O'MEAR is a well known Irish sect which has produced many distinguished men and women. It gave its name to the village of Toomevara, which locates their homeland. This is one of the few O' names from which the prefix was never widely dropped.

MEERS

The completion of CPR timesheets of John Edward in March 1910, was clearly shown as MEERS. The family or surname of MEER or MEERE originated from the Clare family of Drumcleeve; sometimes corrupted to the English MYERS.

MEYERS

Most of earlier entries in the Family Bible use the MEYERS spelling but the corresponding entries appear to have been written by the same hand. Later entries in the Bible are written in a different hand.

Receipts for payments of merchandise, by John Edward , in June 1908, were spelled MEYERS by the merchant (Dobie & Company Limited).

The family surname of MEYER, sometimes called MEYERS, is usually of native origin when found in the west of Ireland, Vismeere. As a foreign name, it has three different origins: English, French and German.

MYERS

The family Bible's later entries seem to indicate that the younger family members used MYERS while the older members used the MEYERS spelling.

Written records about the marriges of Ethel, Georgina, and Anne, all show the use of the MYERS spelling.

John Edward and Sarah Jane were buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, under the spelling of MYERS. Records at city hall show that his death and residence use the MYERS spelling.

Therefore, unfortunately, the exact origin of MYERS within our family is lost in the vast space of time.
