This Week's Results

18th April, 2009 - ROCKINGHAM

Twelve players attended the tight Rockingham course to contest a game of stableford. The weather was overcast and muggy and later rained steadily for about 40-50 minutes dampening everyone’s enthusiasm. At least it wasn’t windy though. The course was in good condition having survived a fire (deliberately lit..?) with all of its local inhabitants (the kangaroos) heavily present at each hole. The players should have offered them a drink, they looked dead thirsty. On another note, a quick warning. All players who haven’t paid MUST be financial by next week’s game so those of you this relates to pay up please or you won’t be eligible for anything thereafter. You have been warned.

1st KEITH CHOPPING 39 pts
Rockingham is one course where driving accuracy is of the utmost importance due to its very narrow fairways and unforgiving rough. (That is when it isn’t burnt and can hide your ball!). This info is of importance when talking of the winner, Keith. He has finally invested in a modern massive headed driver that resembles a land mine in size and shape having finally given up on his trusty Callaway circa 1900 or maybe 1890. (Just kidding Keith – umm then again, maybe I’m not). Keith hit 14 out of 14 fairways with this new club and posted a magnificent score of 39 points. Because of his accuracy he was able to attack every flag and must have also putted great to score so well. He must view any course with confidence, and rightly so after this performance. Based on today’s showing he has several more wins in store for the year and of course now has entry to the hallowed Masters. Congratulations Keith.

2nd Paul Bachman 38 pts
Paul started off very modestly with 14 points for the 1st nine and thought that breaking 30 points would have been a good achievement. However, something magical happened after this point and he played to par for the next 7 holes off the stick. This score included 2 birdies and a double bogey. By this stage Paul was thinking he could hole 3 irons but then crashed to reality by bogeying the final two holes to finish with a gross 38 for the back nine adding 24 pts to his 14. His performance might have had something to do with regripping his clubs, but was probably due to him not worrying about scoring and just having a good time. He hopes to have a win soon and carry this form on each week.

3rd  Tony Bartlett 36 pts
Kiwi Bartlett continues to impress. He features in the winners podium each week and has already had 2 wins for the year. Apparently he also has a personal golf coach so he’s taking this caper very seriously indeed. (Maybe he wants to give up his day job and join the pro ranks.) Today he played to his par which is all anyone can ask really, and could have featured higher but his putting apparently let him down. Better luck next time mate.

4th Andy Stirling 36 pts
Andy has been in the golfing doldrums for several weeks. Usually a consistent driver off the tee, Andy has struggled with this all year leading to mediocre scores and some dreaded NAGA’s. Today all that was put behind him and he posted a handy par stableford score losing on countback to Tony. This effort certainly cheered him up because he was seen smiling and buying beers at the end, a good sign his game is back on track and a win soon beckons. He must be getting used to his new driver which looks like a cane toad in its beauty, but is certainly effective.

5th Rob van Herk 33 pts
Ah there is Rob’s name again. Rob is mentor to many players within our club because of his great knowledge of the game, but more importantly because he can effectively impart this knowledge without offending anyone. Rob is good to play with because he always encourages one to do his best even if that person is playing poorly. A win isn’t far for Rob, and one gets the feeling it’s all a matter of good touch and feel on the day for him because technically he has it all. He’s certainly getting closer to a win each week though. Keep it up big fella.
