I started my writing and editing career even before I graduated from
a Catholic university here in Taipei. From 1987 to 1992, I was employed
as Editor-in-Chief of a geographical monthly (published in Chinese). After
that, I worked for three years as producer, coordinator, reporter and outdoor
host for a TV travel-documentary series focused on Chinese culture and
travel in Mainland China. So for a period of several years, I was spending
an average of eight months a year in China. I quit the position as producer
at the end of 1995; traveling in China was demanding, and I was tired of
it. And I thought that I should slow down and give myself more time to
promote my writing career.
However, it was very important for me to travel in China, for I was able to visit remote and forbidden areas and discover the real China. I came to realize that the China we used to talk about was no longer there. And as I stood on Chinese soil, I was able to see Taiwan more clearly.
Besides my published novel, articles and translations of novels for various publishers, I'm now working on academic and research studies on cross-cultural comparisons of Mainland China and Taiwan, including various cultural and language issues. Also, I'm working on the translation and editing for culture and travel works for Dorling & Kindersly, dealing with areas such as Spain and California. I don't directly work for Dorling & Kindersly, but it's authorized publisher here.
I love to travel very much. Thanks to the flexibility of my work, I've been able to visit around 25 countries in the past few years.
Traveling has opened a grand window on life for me. Through contact with people from different cultures, I've become a more open-minded and interesting person. Every place I've visited is a treasure to me. I'd love to exchange travel experiences with you.
