United's FAI Cup Record

Galway have competed against a total of 25 clubs in the FAI Cup and have beaten 17 of these at one time or another.  Our most frequent opponents have been Waterford United, who we have been drawn against on 4 occasions, and they have knocked us out on three occasions.

Shamrock Rovers have been our opponents twice - on both occasions in the Final, losing 1-0 in 1985, but we beat them 1-0 in 1991.

  • 1992:- First Round.. beat Fermoy by 3-0 at Terryland on February 16. Beaten in the 2nd Round away to Bray Wanderers on a 1-0 scoreline.

  • 1993:-First Round... At Home to Athlone Town. 14.02.93. "Gums" report in SRO was... v Athlone Clown...lost 3-2. The biggest crowd of the season came to a very wet Terryland to see three impressive o.g.'s by Ollie Grobbaler. Under pressure, Buck knocks the ball back to Ollie, who kicks an advancing wasp (instead of the ball). Cappy and Devlin score, one apiece, but its not enough. If Ollie tried to miss those three shots again, he'd catch them with his eyes closed. Athlone were crap. The ref was worse. Jumbo, Mags and Ski were needed badly, especially Jumbo. Ollie visits a shrink after the game who reccommends drugs. Oh Well.

  • 1995:- When Galway United v Waterford United came out of the draw together, nobody realised it would take a record breaking 6 weeks to complete the tie. Originally scheduled for January 29th, it was postponed to the following Wedensday, when a 2-2 draw was played out in Terryland Park. The scorers for United were Mark Herrick and Billy Clery, while Paul Cashin and a Kevin Kelly penalty scored for Waterford United. The replay was abandoned the following week after 57 minutes in Waterford due to weather conditions. There were two more postponements before a 1-1 draw was played out, after extra time. The scorers were Richie Hale for Waterford, Ricky O'Flaherty for Galway United. And so there had to be a second replay in Galway, which went ahead after 3 further postponements. Galway won 2-0 with goals from Neary and O'Flaherty, to earn a second round tie against Sligo Rovers. [In all there were 10 attempts to play the first round tie!]. In the Showgrounds, the 2nd round tie finished 0-0, before Sligo beat United in the replay at Terryland Park on 22/03/95.
