The Shack - WWWebster Dictionary comes up with this:
Main Entry: shack
Pronunciation: 'shak
Function: noun
Etymology: probably back-formation from English dialect shackly rickety
Date: 1878
1 : HUT, SHANTY
2 : a room or similar enclosed structure for a particular person or use

However, as we all remember so dearly, it was also the name given to the enclosed terracing in the old pre-redevelopment Terryland Park, and a location for many happy memories.

Galway United F.C.

Galway United will play in the Premier Division of the FAI National League of Ireland next season, and entered the League in 1977. Home matches are played in Terryland Park, Dyke Rd., on Friday nights (19:45 kick-off). United' manager is Don'O'Riordan, Assistant Manager is Noel Mernagh, while Ollie Neary is Club Captain.

I first visited Terryland when about 8 years old, when my dad took me along after a mix up in the time of one of Connacht's rugby interprovincial matches - he brought me to Terryland to make up for missing the rugby! It wasn't long after I was hooked, having been a regular in Terryland Pk since I was 11 or 12. I have have seen both good and bad times while following the club - United have picked up a few trophies, and entered European competition... but the club has twice been relegated, and after the last time we went down in 1995/6, we have yet to return to the Premier Division. [hopefully this season!]

From the age of about 8, I used to religously keep a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of all Uniteds games along with the results and league table... doing the website since 1996, I've wished I still had them! All those stats!

A lot of the stuff on this site has been re-located from my old site, hosted by Thomas Bridges on his Trinity College pages. At the time that site was being maintained regularly in 1996, only ourselves and Kilkenny City from the First Division, along with Sligo, Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers, Derry and I think Cork City had sites... There's a lot more now... although Kilkenny's has fallen by the wayside...

Enjoy anyhow, and please do leave any comments, even if only a 'hello' in the guestbook!

See ya,

Alan Brett
