League Cup Final - 2nd leg.
Cork City 1-1 Galway United. (United win 4-2 on aggregate)
United captured their second trophy of the season at a packed Turners Cross,
after holding Cork City to a 1-1 draw in Turners Cross, on New Years Day. United
had beaten City by 3-1 on December 17 in the first leg, and Cork were unable to
peg back the deficit in front of about 8,000 fans, including 500 or so from
Galway. Indeed crowd congestion at the start had delayed the kick-off by 10
minutes, from the original 1:30 kick-off time, and this despite the arctic
weather conditions.
Galway were made to work for their success though as they had to weather heavy
early City pressure, which resulted in a 12th minute goal for Damien O'Connell.
O'Connell rose unattended to head home Ollie Cahill's inswinging free kick from
6 yards. Four minutes later United could have equalised when Derek Rogers clearance caught
out the Cork rearguard, which sent Aidan Forde and Mark Herrick through on goal.
However Brian barry-Murphy, who had played the pair on-side, redeemed himself when
he sprinted goalside of Forde and averted the danger.
Cork, however, dominated the proceedings for most of the first half.John Caulfield
was just over from 12 yards following another Cahill free kick; and then Van Boxtel
did well to save from Cahill. Towards half-time though, United came more into the
game, and an enforced half-time substitution had an almost dramatic effect on the
game's eventual outcome. Gareth Beatty suffering from an asthma attack, was withdrawn
and Sean O'Neill introduced. O'Neill went onto the right wing, while Ronan Killeen
dropped back to right full back, and this right hand side pairing plugged the holes
evident in the first half, and were a springboard for Uniteds second half gameplan,
the move balanced United.
Fergal Coleman's eleventh goal of the season in the 67th minute put the tie beyond
City's reach. Noel Hartigan was dispossessed by Jumbo Brennan on the edge of the
penalty box, and Jumbo centered for Coleman, who controlled the ball and steered a
right foot shot past Noel Mooney.
Not even late subtitutions of Dave Mawson and Dave Barry could save Cork, as United
fans started their celebrations. Stops in Charleville for some food, and then in
Clarenbridge for a few drinks in Sherry's, before the cavalcade arrived at Kates Bar
for a night long session, with the League Cup on display. If only it could be like
this all the time.
