Match Reports

Monaghan United 2 - 0 Galway United
Well, the game versus Monaghan was the most abysmal performance by United that I've seen since the 3-0 defeat by Cobh Ramblers much earlier in the season. According to the lads who made it along to the last two games, they were of much the same pattern. United kept playing hopeful balls towards the frontline all game... it was very scrappy, with very few decent passing movements, no one prepared to either run at the defence or try a shot on target. Do they expect to walk the ball into the net? Gareth Gorman had United's best attempt on goal with a free kick which was a metre or so wide of the post... and Gareth was given plenty of verbal abuse by Ricky for doing so... at least Don put things straight with Gareth by telling him Ricky was out of order... what was needed was an attempt on goal... God help anyone trying to choose a United man of the match... The first goal after 4 minutes resulted from a goalmouth scramble, and a United player made a goal-line clearance only to see it hit Fran Carter's back and go into the net. KArl Wilson got Monaghan's second with 7 minutes to go...
The game was attended by a group of German fans who made the trip down from the N.Ireland game the day before... God knows what they thought! They were decorated by the Supporters Club lads in Galway United jerseys and scarves! Actually the combined Galway & German visiting contingent probbly outnumbered the Monaghan fans....
BTW, sitting in the stand were Paul Thornton, Ian Rossitter, Harry Costelloe, and Mike Quirke... none of whom were even chosen on the bench, although apparently Quirke had failed a fitness test prior to the game.
United: Cobey, Watson, Gorman, Carter, Clery, Sheridan, Keane, Dolan, Cregg, Keogh, Lucas.
subs: Neary, O'Flaherty, Lavine. Not used: Keesham, O'Connor.
And to think I spent 11 hours on a bus yesterday to go to the game... groan... Please bring back Rossitter and Quirke as full backs for next week! And drop that fecking eejit Ryan Lucas and send him on holidays to Barbados....
