Hello fellow Jeepers.
I have a 1983 CJ-7 that has had an ignition upgrade you may be interested in. My Jeep originally had a Duraspark system. Someone removed it along with most of the wires and replaced it with a GM point type. It would have been to much work to rewire and use the Duraspark. So for my upgrade I chose the GM HEI. I had never heard of this before. But one day going through some of my junk I came across an old GM distributor from a 250 cid 6 cyl. I realized that the base was the same as the Jeep distrib. So I went to work. I gave it a through overhaul to begin with, then rounded up a new cap, coil, module, and wires. I was set for the swap when I noticed the drive gear teeth were backward from the Jeep's. I solved the problem by using the gear that was on the Jeep distrib. If you try this some day don't forget to keep the timing straight. So I got it in and started the hook up. This part is very simple. One 12 volt wire that is hot when the key switch is on. The one to the battery or pos. side of your old coil is an easy find. If you have earlier point type you want to bypass the ballast resistor so you will have a full 12 volts. I have my ignition timing set a 10 deg. btdc which may be a little high but I use the premium nolead and it does just fine. I know of two other people that have done this. My brother did his and he helped a friend do one. All turned out great. Before I did this I had trouble at high altitude with flooding. At lower altitude it did better but now it is great. No hard starts or hesitations.
If you have any questions feel free to e mail me. I'll help any way I can.
Happy Jeeping
